Termites = tenting?

Anyone have experience with termites eating their homes?

The termite inspection people recommend tenting our house, which I do NOT want to do. I don't want to pack up all my food, medications, cosmetics, etc. I don't want the expense of a couple nights in a hotel. I don't want my bushes mashed. And most of all, I don't want poison injected into my house.

They can spot treat, but it costs almost as much as tenting and is not as effective.

Anyone else face this dilemma?

Yes, and we tented. We had to do all of the things you mentioned above. A pain to do, but more thorough than spot treating. Around here...Tampa, FL...it's quite common to see the tents throughout different neighborhoods.

We were not tented, it wasn't even an option. The exterminator drilled into our foundation every foot or so and injected the liquid. It creates a barrior so the termites cannot go back to the hive each night. I guess that might be the difference in living in the north and having full basements?

Next week I need to get my house tented for drywood termites. I think my palms except for a small Thrinax Morrisii should be okay, but I do have many other types of plants that I'm concerned with. Does anyone have ideas on what can be done to save plants that will go under the tent that I won't be able to move besides just watering them deeply the day before?

The tenting was done 1 1/2 weeks ago and luckily we only lost a couple of plants, and a few others look like they will survive. I ended up planting too many plants too close to the house. Since my first posting I potted up a bunch of the uncommon plants that were within a foot or so from the house, and planted most of them back into the garden, but farther from the house this time. All my plants now are in a much safer distance from the house, and I even gave a few away. By the way, I had a minor amount of drywood termites coming in one area of the house and didn't want them to become a problem. It was done by a large national company that has a guarantee that is lifetime and kept up with a once yearly renewal.

Today is the day! The guys are here. Company name is Ecola. They have treated our attic with extreme heat. They said the upstairs rooms will be like a really hot day, and had us move our oil paintings downstairs to protect them. They have started drilling into studs that show signs of infestation and they are injecting those with that virus. He explained the virus is now in the wood, and once the termites touch it and touch each other, the entire colony will be killed. Hubby negotiated with them for a better price and saved about $500. This treatment cost us $1800, and our house and decks are pretty big! This includes a warranty. They just left for lunch and will be back to finish later. They will probably inject all the wood decks surrounding this house. Happy they didn't have to tent!

Creeping fig and termite tenting

I have the same thing going right now as I have creeping fig (Ficus pumilla) on one side of the house, up to and covering the fascia, and I'm having a new roof put on. Mine was slow to get going but over the last few years I've had to keep cutting it back as it wants to grow over the roof, and when I cut it back I cut. back approx 5-6' and it regrows very quickly. So I just told the roofers to chop away! Now that yours has an established root system it might well regrow more quickly than it did the first time. This article says that the fumigant doesn't harm plant roots but can burn foliage that it comes in contact with. Your plant is outside the house; the fumigant is going to be released inside the house. The tent is to minimize leakage into the surrounding air. My guess is that you might see some minor burning on the leaves, but that the plant should be ok. Make sure to water it before tenting so that it isn't stressed and so that the water acts as a barrier to the roots. Lynn, the South has 2 kinds of termites...Subterranean and Dry Wood. We tent for Dry Wood termites and use the drilling/chemical treatment for the Subterranean termites.

Unfortunately, we had both in our last home. It was much cheaper to drill & treat than to tent.

I had termites last year and did the drilling/chemical treatment. Tenting wasn't even suggested.

I've been listening to radio ads here in the SF bay area for orange oil termite treatment...maybe they offer it in your area?

Evidently, no tenting, packing up, and it's supposed to be "generally regarded as safe" around children and pets.

You are absolutely right Mona. I work for an exterminating compamy. We never tent. We are in Kentucky so the only termites we have are subterranean for now. I don't know what they charge to tent, but a chemical treatment on an average size home in out area is about $1200 to $1500. No treatment is cheap, but as we tell our customers, your house is you single largest investment, you want to protect it.
