Kitchen lighting expertise wanted - on lighting forum too

The paper is down. The walls will be treated with venetian plaster and will be tan"ish". The cabinets and floors will stay the same for now. The parimeter countertops will be absolute black, backsplash yet to be determined. The island will be brand new - antique black woodwork with a Juparana Classico granite top. Island appliances to be black, built-in oven to be ss/black, cooktop to be flat black induction, SS hood with two lights over cooktop, frig to be SS.

The area above island contains a steel beam. There will be a pot rack centered on this soffit over the island and some sort of lighting to each side. The light over the kitchen table will be moved to be centered over the table. LOTS of natural light during the daytime.

Please advise as to lighting - we have contracted with someone to put in under and overlighting, 6 cans, two pendents and two accent cans over the bay windows, but I don't know if that is adequate or where the cans should go or what size cans to use.... Ack. Thanks in advance.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

What are the dimensions of your work area?

TRying to guess from your pictures, I would add more than 6 cans, cuz You'll want one over your message centre, and perhaps 9 rather than 6 in your big work area. It's going to be a great space! Are you going to change the hardware on the doors too?

Thanks for responding. The hardware will change, but I am waiting until everthing else is done. We want something on the light cabinets that will complement but not be exact to whatever we decide to put onto the island. The island will have a black, silgranite sink and rubbed bronze faucet.

Work space size - from cooktop counter edge to island counter edge is 5.5 feet. From oven counter edge to frig is 13 feet.

I don't know the maker of the existing light and I can't find pendants to match, so I may have to replace it, too. We will drop it lower to the table, but we have to keep it high now because my husband kept bumping his head with it not being centered.

Pricing? Our current bid is for 3,400 to do what I have described above. does that sound reasonable for the Midwest? He is supplying everything but the pendants.

PS - thanks for any input. I discovered this wonderful group of experts just recently and I have been reading and taking notes. We have never updated a kitchen before.

The question should be what LED light as LED lighting is displacing other types of lighting - fluorescent, incandescent. The lighting level should be appropriate for the tasks being done in the space. A often used number for kitchens is 35 lumens per sq ft. The typical output from a recessed can is about 600 lumens using a 60w incandescent bulb. A CR 6 lamp has an advertised output of ~ 625 lumens and uses ~ 10 w. There are a number of LED light options available today - Cree branded CR & BR series, Sylvania RT series, ... The light quality, spread and amount varies. vwhippie, the corbels would make it too gingerbready IF you use gingerbready corbels. The door with its woodwork gives what is a very simple exterior the heft and interest it needs, esp. with those beautiful tall windows on the first floor. Adding somewhat simple, "farm-housey" corbels would beautifully carry the whole porch with what the door does and balance it out. As for the old house thing, never say never until the pro says it can't be done. As I said, there has to be an electrical box in that wall for the light you've got. An electrician can tell you if a pendant light can be wired to that box. If not, it can't. But the age of the house has nothing to do with this particular subject. As I said, my house is 1880. I just added an outdoor lamp because when I bought the house, there was a three-bay window in this wall that had rotted out, including the wall, and it made sense to put glass sliding doors in there, so I did. But it's needed an exterior lamp. I finally had an onion lamp installed a few weeks ago. It was a piece of cake. He just drilled a hole, and wired the lamp to the box that is in the wall. FYI: I was with a couple of kids, a 16 year old girl and 12 year old boy, and I showed them the pics, didn't say one word about who was proposing what. Showed them the pics, and then asked them which new light situation they thought was best. The girl I asked first (boy wasn't even around) and she said the pendant light. The boy actually said, "I"d put a light in the middle" as soon as I showed him just the photo of your front door and hadn't even shown him any of the mockups or even said anything about anything. So he also saw the pendant light right away. Genius kid! Lol.

ebean - I love the holophone pendants - we put a larger one over my sink and I think it looks lovely. It throws light up and down, as well has the slight glitter effect versus the opaque schoolhouse. I like that it is old style yet the use in the kitchen feels new. The fixture/bar drops 24" plus the glass itself, but you can get a shorter bar but I think the 24" works in my nine foot ceiling over the sink. Here it is before we hung it. I can take and post a photo of it installed if it will help you. Here is a nice photo from the website It can be either ORB, polished nickle or satin nickle trim. The trim is more substantial than the smaller RH one, but unfortunately it is more expensive as well ($500ish) - and with the RH sale going on right now. But scale with lighting is really important so you might want to pull out your balloons and hang to see. But either size I think they will look lovely and special. I wouldn't think you would need to replace the existing chandelier. Most lighting stores will have lots of catalogues where you can practically have your pendants custom made, ie pick shades, pick rod, etc. Take a pic of your present light with you, and a good sales person should find what you need.

Lee Valley tools has a good selection of cabinet hardware- lots of choices in ORB too. (That's where I got mine)It can be a bit of a pain negotiating around their site- but try lots of different searches- prices are really good.
