I want these measuring cups!

But they are WAY too dadgum expensive. I can just hear it now-"Honey, I'm going to order some measuring cups. Ok, sure. How much are they? Only $178." Followed by a thump and my DH hitting the floor :) I saw them on Paula Deen's show and thought they were just beautiful. I have no idea what they used to measure in colonial days, but these wouldn't look out of place in a colonial kitchen I don't think. Anyways, if anyone happens to see a much cheaper version of these anywhere, could you please give me a shout out?

Oh, I know their work. They're pewtersmiths in Eugene, Oregon. He'd probably still drop at $138.50, but here they are.

So....I saw the title of this post.....and thought Jeezey Peazy....who gets off on measuring cups...just give me a pyrex 2 cup measure and I'm happy....maybe a 1/2 cup measure with a long handle for dog food....I mean really who the he!! cares? Thinking about all the measuring cups at church, pampered chef etc...pah! measuring cups....
THEN I opened the link!!!! Oh my! If I had them in my kitchen I might even measure things!! simply beautiful....definitly something to lust after!

Karen, I use the powder. Last year I stocked up because there was word that production was going to be discontinued. It wasn't available for awhile but now is back on the shelves. Perhaps they changed the formula. There are a lot of reviews on Amazon, perhaps you can find answers if you have specific questions. Had I read this, I would have know it would take out the paint on my measuring cups. WARNING that is provided by LemiShine: Check manufacturers' suggested cleaning instructions on all dishwashersafe items. Not recommended for painted glassware, painted mugs,aluminum, enamel coated silverware or fine china. Do not use with non-stick coated cookware or removable stove top components. Do not mix withliquid bleach. If eye contact occurs, flush eyes with water. Ifswallowed, drink plenty Of water To dilute. If any irritation develops,contact your physician. Excuse me Tina, are you implying we don't celebrate the "meaning" of Christmas because we enjoy giving to each other? My DIL's father is considered a "Pillar" of the Church (Babtist) they attend, and I can assure you we do celebrate the meaning. All year long. We all look forward to the Christmas Prayer he prepares. He leaves out no family member who may be ill or in pain or not with us. We've always celebrated the meaning of Christmas. Giving gifts is part of the meaning. Three Wise Men? :) I do remember last year around Christmas it seemed that the majority of this board didn't like to exchange Christmas gifts & I found that kind of odd. That's okay though, I have no problem with it. But please don't make me feel like Christmas is only commercial to me. And f/t/r, my son's write me short letters/notes all during the year, each and every year, mostly in cards, even though they live near me. They're the most beautiful words I've ever read. I cherish them and have saved each and every letter/card. I watch my grandson every week during the school year, and about every few weeks I go into my son's office and set a note on his keyboard that always says, "Mommy loves you," or "If you were little I'd rock you." Now my son tells his 2 year old, "When you're old and gray, I'll rock you." I end all my letters and cards to them by saying, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as you're living, my baby you'll be." So we have PLENTY of love and we also love to GIVE to each other at Christmas. What's so wrong with that? And how did this thread end up about whether we should or should not give to those we love at Christmas time?

I agree, "get a good scale". Heck, get a cheap scale - just get a scale and eliminate the conversion math quiz. You'll soon be sorry you didn't get a scale a long time ago. There are all kinds of things a scale makes easier in the kitchen. -Divide bread dough into equal amounts so the loaves, rolls, buns, etc. are all the same size and will bake evenly. -When you make layer cakes you can scale the batter in the pans to equal weights so the layers are the same size. -It's a lot easier weighing sticky things than scooping them into cups (although you'd have a hard time getting my Wonder Cup from me ;-). -Accuracy...as already mentioned. If you have 3 people measure 1-cup of flour, they will all be a different weight because of how they fill them. They may be as little as 3.75 oz. to as much as 5 or 6 oz. BTW - There are not any "standards" for how much a cup of flour weighs. Even the "experts" can't decide this one. -Dry measuring cups and spoons sold in the U.S. are not manufactured to a standardized volume, so each set you have may be slightly different in volume. Measuring cups/spoons in the U.K. and Australia are larger than the ones from the U.S. About the only reason measuring cups work at all is because most recipes are based on a ration of ingredients. For instance, a plain cake has, by measure, one-third as much fat as sugar; two-thirds as much milk as sugar; and about three times as much flour as liquid. So you can use measuring cups, grandma's coffee or tea cup, canning jars, or buckets for measuring, as long as you maintain the ration of ingredients. The exact measurement isn't as critical as the ratio of one ingredient to another. -With a scale, when you need 4 oz. of shredded cheese you can weigh it and not try to figure out how many cups that will be, and whether the cup is loose-packed or tightly-packed. It's 4-oz. by weight and you don't have to worry if you've over-stuffed the cup or not put enough in it. -However, accuracy of measurement goes out the window when it comes to flour for bread making - also already mentioned.... Due to the amount of moisture in flour (more in humid weather and less in the dry winter months), if will alter the weight of the flour. You have to go by the "feel" of the dough rather than an exact measurement. Each bag of flour will also vary in protein/gluten content, as well as moisture. The higher the protein level in the flour, the more hydration it will absorb. Protein content of flour can't be weighed with a scale. -Grainlady

Oh boy... now you did it. I've been in lust with these measuring cups since first saw them on Paula Deen. I love the large shallow cups on them and... I didn't even know how beautiful the handles are. Yikes.

The good news is that they sell them individually as replacement pieces at that link that readinglady posted. The one cup is ... only...lol.. $58. You could ask for them one at a time as presents. Ask for the big one first and by time you get to the measly $24 1/4 cup they won't seem so bad. Smiles. Hey, I tried.

you have now and
fill it to 2/3 cup of your favorite liquor and sip on it.

It will make you feel better. If you fall on the floor, then you will know how you DH would feel.

I would rather see you make something new and Delicious .

It's not the tools you use but what you Create with the tools.

If you can afford it go for the measuring cups.
If you can't afford it " Get Them Anyway "

I live in a small tourist town and they have a set of measuring cups and spoons that are very similar at our very small market. I looked at them, very cute, and they were some ware around $40.00. I have also seen them at the local Ace hardware store. I donÂt know what they are made of but I will find out and let you all know.

But if you really want them and it wonÂt break the bank I say go for it. Sometimes you have to get something that just makes you smile every time you look at it.

If they get LindaC's stamp of approval, I guess they I really do need them.

I like the idea of getting them individually, but I'm afraid to do the math and see how much more I'd be spending :)

Yes-I could buy them if I wanted but I don't think I could do it, at least not now when there are kids needing new shoes and a million other things. I have a feeling they will end up in my kitchen sometime down the road though.

Claudia, please let me know about Ace. I don't have one here, but there's one in my hometown. I never would have imagined they'd have kitchen items there.

Beautiful! I would just hang them up as art and not use them. I checked eBay and they have the Tin Woodsman Pewter HEARTS Measuring Spoons & Post for $58. Still a little too pricey for me. They had lots of fancy cups when I put in the search term "pewter measuring cups". They had "pewter like" safe to use zinc ones with coffee cups, hummingbird, kitty cat, cupcake, flower and rooster for $19.99.

After looking at eBay and Amazon I think the sets at Ace and my market are probably the less expensive Ganz Metal not the Tim Woodsman pewter. Now I have something on my wish list that I really donÂt need and didnÂt know I even wanted. LOL

Thank you guys for helping me find some great alternates. $40 is a bargain compared to $178 LOL! I'm definitely going to check out the Ganz ones next time I'm home. As for the munchkins and their shoes, the little one will wear CROCS all summer so that's a bargain. The big one needs tennis shoes-he's in adult sizes and he's at the age where he's brand conscious so shoes are a major expense. I saw some clearance Nikes the other day for $70 that he said were acceptable, so I may luck out there. Otherwise, we are looking at around $100. Sigh...

I had the same reaction as Lindac, what is the big deal about measuring cups. Oh my, I see the big deal, absolutely beautiful and I just spent about 20 mins on the various pages. The grape canisters, pewter candle holders, tin light switch plates, on and on.

I want these measuring cups!
