Comments (42)I think (hope) doctors today have the mindset of sparing what organs they can. I've read/heard arguments on both sides of the story. Here's some info from the wall street journal health journal: Cutting Less More doctors are challenging the convention of removing the cervix during a hysterectomy. Here's why: * Pap smears have sharply reduced the incidence of cervical cancer. * Sparing the cervix reduces the risk of bladder damage. * Some doctors say it may improve sexual function. Some 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the U.S. every year, making it the second-most common women's surgery after Caesarean section. It is done to remove cancers of the uterus or cervix, or more commonly to treat a painful condition called endometriosis or because of noncancerous uterine growths called fibroids. Prior to 1940, nearly all hysterectomies preserved the cervix because it was easier and safer given the lack of antibiotics and blood banks. But by the 1960s, removing the cervix, viewed as a cancer preventative at a time when Pap smears were still fairly new, became standard. Now the tide appears to be turning. In 2006, 9.7% of U.S. inpatient hysterectomies, which account for more than 90% of the procedures, preserved the cervix, compared with just 1.7% a decade earlier, according to federal data. ------- Just sharing that info, not saying they are right. It's something anyone considering a hysterectomy should think about. I'm just thankful that we have alternatives to an actual hysterectomy these days. tina...See MorePlease tell me about your fireclay sink . . .
Comments (9)There was recently another thread similar to this one. You may want to look back and try to find it. In any case, I did a ton of research and ended up going with the Shaw's sink. I looked at many of the common brands and always kept going back to the classic style of the Shaw single bowl fireclay. But, the deciding factors were a few: 1) Home & Stone (recommended by other GWers) had a great price, great return policy, and great shipping options, 2) Shaw's has warranties that are much better than some of the other brands. Belle Foret was one sink style (and price) that I liked, but the company doesn't have a direct contact number and after TONS of phone calls, I came to find out that they don't warranty the sink AT ALL! I'm not spending my hard-earned money on something that isn't warrantied or doesn't come from a company w/ good (or any) customer service. 3.) My cabinet maker said he's installed many farmhouse sinks and he thinks the Shaw's are the extremely reliable, even though they have sometimes imperfect shapes. But, a good cabinet maker should be able to work with handcrafted sinks and still make it look great! So, Shaw's it was. I'm about a month away from installing and using mine, but, I love what I see in the box! HTH!...See MorePlease tell me about your Silgranite Sink
Comments (12)blondelle: Yes, it is the metallic gray. It's a little washed out in that pic, I think, due to the sunlight. Here's a close-up pic that I took shortly after it was installed: From Kitchen We were able to borrow the sample blocks from our local Expo (I miss that place) and take them to the granite yard so we could pick the best color. I liked the silver one the best as it picked up the grays in the granite and just blended in nicely. lovlilynne: Call him, confirm, have him come back and install properly if he did use putty. Instead, you just use clear caulk (I think). The instructions on what to do / not do should have come with your sink so check to confirm. That's how Hubby found out about the no putty deal. It may need replacing, in which case I'd be after the plumber as he is the one who screwed up. But make sure you check with him to confirm, first as I'm just guessing....See MoreRedroze - tell me about your sink - Please!
Comments (1)Hi gr82bgrammy (LOVE your username by the way), The Formica basalt slate was in our old kitchen. I agree that the sink looks just perfect with it. It's a Blanco double sink, the material is silgranit which tons of people rave about (just run a search for silgranit). The colour is anthracite which is black with a few speckles of grey. It cleans like a dream, hardly ever looks dirty. For our new kitchen, we bought the same Blanco silgranit sink, only a single bowl variety and in the Biscuit colour because our granite is light coloured. I heard the Anthracite looks "clean" longer than the Biscuit. If you have other questions, let me know!...See MoreBuehl
