American Standard Allegiance vs Tappan Tech 3 both 16 seer

Hi everyone,

I recently got 2 very similiar price quotes for replacing my 4 ton ac system/Gas furnace.

American Standard Allegiance 16 (told by contractor it was exactly the same as Trane XL series)

Tappan Tech3 16 Seer. (Made by Maytag/Nordyne)

Both quotes come with 10 yr parts and labor warranty with manufacturer, both have a 4 inch media filter included, both include same efficiency fiurnace which isn't a factor in Dallas TX warm winters.

I see the ARI website lists both of them as true 16 SEER / 12 EER performance for the parts and models in my quotes. Both are using Copeland 2 speed scroll compressor,variable speed air handler.

IS there any advantage of one over the other? Contractors are both pretty equal so far... not a big company but a private business. Both been in business for around 15 yrs.

Any experiences with either model/manufacturer you'd like to share? Since they are both priced exactly to the $$ so far, I need something else to help me decide.

They are both so close in design, features and benefits however between the two with regards to the AC I would pick A/S because the the sleeker, heavier and sturdier outdoor cabinet.
Without more info on the furnaces, I can't comment. The furnaces do matter as they are the driving force (blower) and control center for both the AC and heat

The American Standard has a number of features that the Tappan does not:

1. Spine fin coil. This is the best condensor coil on the market. It has superior heat transfer ability and holds up better against debris.

2. All aluminum evaporator coil. Make sure the A/S dealer doesnt try to put in another coil. The all aluminum coil resists corrosion and transfers heat better. It's also less leak prone.

3. DC drive condensor fan motor. Helps the condensor run quieter and more efficient.

4. Cabinet is stamped after it's painted. Children wont cut their fingers if they stick them in the cabinet.

5. A/S has proven itself over the years. It hasn't been at the top of Consumer Reports for 6 years on accident.

I've put in the Nordyne 16 SEER. There's nothing wrong with it, but is certainly not an American Standard. I actually have that same Nordyne unit in my home and have not had any problems.

nysaclk2829,ruud is a middle of the line unit.You have read that ruud is inferior to Trane because it is true.You have probably read that installation is a very impportant factor in equipment life and operation,which is also true.Bob, Trane is going to be the mother company soon instead of american standard(not that I care) TRANE WILL MAKE AMERICAN STANDARD.Trane climatuff compressors are made in Tyler Texas and are the toughest compressors made hands down.I hated the idea of them leaving them and going to a copeland scroll after having so many successful years with the climatuff atleast they put their own patents and still must pass the SEET test. nysaclk2829 ask your dealers if you can go to a showroom or distributor so you can see,touch and judge the quality differences for yourself.I sold Ruud as a second line for a while .I stopped after having evaproator leak problems and doa compressors.I hear they have done some changes to their design.

I'm assuming 3.5 tons is the correct size and has always kept the home cool. I personally would prefer the Trane in my own home, though I would have no problem installing either. Trane I feel tends to hold up better, and I like their aluminum outdoor condenser coil, especially if in a salt-air environment. If installed and maintained properly either should do just fine. You'll get more efficiency out of the Carrier, but not much. And if the Trane coil holds up better after many years (if in a salt-air environment), then the Trane will eventually be more effective/efficient. The 5" media filter is good to have; I'm not quite sold on the UV lights but I suppose they are good to have. Both qualify for the tax credit. The Trane has a 10-year warranty on parts IF you register it within 60 days of installation. Does the Carrier offer 10 years on all parts or just 10 years on the compressor? In FL dehumidification is important. What thermostats are proposed with either setup? You'll want one that can make use of the variable speed blower to control humidity with cooling/blower speed. For example, Honeywell's VisionPRO IAQ.

"I have never thought much about the option of a quiet AC unit outside (or knew they existed) until I got the quote." - I don't understand the big attraction of a "quite quiet" condenser unit (outside). Any new condenser will be much quieter than an older unit. With windows closed when a/c runs, what's the difference if one is slightly more quiet than another? It's the noise coming from the air handler (inside unit) that's important, as this is what you are hearing in the house. The sizing, layout, and material of the ductwork contributes greatly to noise coming from the supply vents. Note that American Standard makes Trane. Note also that the warranties listed are parts-only. You want a PARTS AND WARRANTY for your own peace of mind, whichever brand you choose. The quality of the install is what matters, not necessarily the brand. "the AC was only 3 years old as well" - I didn't read this until after I posted the above reply. Why would you replace a 3 year-old system? Most are warranted for 5 years? "my old 3 ton unit seems to run constantly to keep up. i am wondering if i need something more powerful." - 3 tons for 3000 sq-ft is undersized. Usually 2 separate systems are used. You can't just put a bigger unit in - the ductwork has to be large enough to handle to larger unit. Best of luck to you.

The Trane & American Standard 16 SEER unit have a 2 speed PSC motor. Where did you get the DC idea as in variable speed from?

Thanks guys for the info. Can you tell me what a PSC motor is?

One thing I noticed is that the American Standard Quote listed a 4A7A6048B1 cond coil and a 4TXCB048BC3 Evap coil. On the surface all looks good with matching 4 ton coils but the ARI specsheet for AS 16 SEERS lists the Evap coils as a larger tonnage like 4TXFH063AS. Does some systems require a larger capacity Evap coil to get the advertised SEER? If so I should ask the person who whote up the quote about it. I just wanted to make sure I am reading these correct. I was looking at ARI REF 1237405.

I've seen many 4-ton matchups with Trane with bigger furnaces that require 5-ton coils to get those high efficiencies. Definitely something to ask your contractor about. Ask your contractor for the ARI reference number of his proposed match.

(Nothing special)

However the fan motor on the 16 SEER is two speeds to match the stages of compressor operation closely for proper airflow in tune with stages of compressor output.

One of the guys with the sheets on here could tell you which coil match

Exactly Tiger,

As I asked earlier, I wouldnÂt waste my money on a 16 SEER AC system without a variable speed blower or at least a 2-speed AC blower.

Sorry, it's the 15 with the DC condensor fan motor.

Definitely want a v/s blower with that 16 SEER, and it looks like he/she is getting that...

The XL15i that I've seen did indeed have the DC ECM motor. Very quiet unit.

Your right just not the 16

And to clarify the Copeland compressor, it doesnÂt run at 2-speeds, it has a solenoid that opens allowing the gas out earlier and at a lower pressure during the scroll compression cycle.

Thanks for the info guys.

The air handler for both A/S and Tappan is a variable speed unit. The reason I said the furnace didn't matter was the efficiency of the model didn't need to be a 95% model, just an 80%. A 95% furnace efficiency is overkill in Dallas Texas.. The American Standard includes a AUD080RV4K furnace. Don't know the exact part # details of the Tappan.

As far as the Copeland "2 Speed".... my bad, I meant to say "2 Stage".
