do accuride slides allow you to remove drawers?

This may sound like a strange question. I had a cabinet maker build me a new section of cabinets that were odd sized (only 18 inches deep, rather than standard 24s) and it includes 3 36 inch drawers and 2 17 inch. I told him I wanted full extension, no blumotion or anything.

Well, he used kv slides of some sort which yes, are full extension. But, once the countertop is in, there will be no way to remove the drawers and this doesn't make sense to me. One of the guys showed me how you remove them...from the top, reaching into the actual cabinet base, lifting some sort of wacky trigger and then doing other stuff.......oy, i could not even understand it. but, i do know without a doubt that it can't be done once the counter is on.

I want to order some accurides and change them out, but I won't bother if you can't take out accurides either. Please someone, advise.

You're taking about the side-mounted Accuride slides, like the 3832's? Yes, you can take the drawer out. Pull the drawer out all the way, there is a plastic lever on each side. Flip one up and one down, and pull out the drawer. To put the drawer back in, align with the fixed part of the slide and push.

I have used K&V slides that worked the same way. They were patterned after the Accuride.

Are you certain? I've never seen slides that were made so you couldn't get them out. Maybe ask again and have him show you as if the counter is already in. If that's not possible, could you check online for removal instructions before you do something as drastic and unnecessarily expensive as replacing them? Maybe KV has customer service you could talk to. I'd hate to see spend money and do the work for nothing.

Did you try putting them back where they were to start with? If they still fit the old way, the glides probably need to be adjusted in the back part of the cabinet or the back of the drawer itself for the new configuration.

BlackChamois, Sorry for the delay, I don't use the email account associated with Gardenweb much anymore. Hope I can help you - I ended up using side-mounted drawer slides, the brand I used are Accuride. I'm happy with them, though I have to say that the soft close feature does not always work perfectly. On some of my drawers, I need to give the drawer a nudge to get it to close properly, not a big deal. I will say, though, that my carpenter did say that he thought the Chinese knock-offs really worked better than the Accuride brand. Against his advice, I insisted on Accuride, as my research convinced me they were the best. But, keep in mind that my installation was 4 years ago now. I am happy that I went with side-mounted slides as maximum depth has made the drawers more useful. Hope the photos help!

The drawer is 20-1/2" wide inside, and the jars are just slightly over 2", so they fit with a tiny amount of wiggle room. If I push them to one side, there's less than 1/4" gap. I haven't used them yet to see how well they work. The lids are very tight- once you think they are on, you can give them another 1/4 turn, and I'm sure they will be quite tight. I actually hope they loosen a bit with use, as I don't know if my wife has the grip strength to open them. We keep our bulk spices in the freezer. We buy them from sources such as Penzey's, and try to buy a 6-12 month supply, although some things rarely get used. I make a lot of spice mixtures for different cuisines and BBQ, plus we wind up with things like 6 different varieties of salt. I made a quick list, and came up with about 80 different spices and mixtures, so it's not as crazy as it seems. Filling and labeling is going to be a project! I have surgery coming up, and will be restricted to 'light duty' for as long as two months, so this is one of many projects I've lined up for that time. I have a P-Touch labeler which is fantastic, but the labels get expensive. I want to label the jar, the lid, and a board under the jar so we know where to put them back. I might line the bottom of the drawer with 2" wood squares which I can label, but still re-arrange should the need arise.

Many Cabinetmakers, including myself, will use jigs or templates when drilling multiple units so you don't have to measure every single drawer, hinge, etc. I've made jigs/templates for everything from, drawer hardware, hinges and shelf holes. In your picture it could be that someone used the wrong jig holes or just didn't think it would matter when initially setting up. I'm sure your Cabinetmaker would be willing to adjust to meet your request. Any good "custom" Cabinetmaker would as far as I'm concerned. If he's not a custom shop, it may be impossible to adjust. He may charge you for it. If he has jigs set up for assembly, and they are set for as pictured, he would have set up that middle drawer differently. I'm not just referring to the slides, this also would be for attaching the drawer front. It all depends on how he assembles. The Blum Tandem plus Blumotion slides are IMHO one of, if not the best on the market. It is true that in order to maximize drawer depth (front to back) you may need to add to the depth. I typically used the 560H5500B which are 22" (550mm) slides in order to maximize depth. Technically the drawer ended up being about 21 3/4" long when using these. Total depth for slide is figured by taking the nominal length (550mm in this case) + 3mm. 3mm being the amount the slide is set in front the front edge. For inches divide the metric by 25.4. I found these to be perfect for maximizing depth without needing to adjust depth of cabinet. However, it comes down to how your Cabinetmaker makes his cabinet and the usable depth of your cabinet.

I'm w/ rhome--ask them to show you how to get it out once the counter is in.

Maybe you'll need to reach from underneath.

But I cannot imagine that anything but the cheapest of 3/4-extension slides would not allow you to take the drawer out. (and even those, I bet you can. even if you have to unscrew it, but probably not then)

And KV *does* have customer service; they are very nice.

Thanks everyone for your answers. and yes, Candi, I mean the side mounts. I have a feeling that these slides may be discontinued. Or maybe they weren't kv after all. But yes, I am sure. The levers for disengaging are all inside the cabs...they can't be seen or felt when the drawers are opened. We discussed this when he was here and he just said that it wouldn't matter since they were full extension. Matters to me....When I go to clean those lower drawers, I will be wishing I could take them out and put them on the counter for the sake of my back!

I was thinking about this today as I was installing Accuride slides in my DIY walk-in closet. I think the installer screwed the part of the slide that is supposed to attach to the drawer box to the cabinet box, and vice versa. That would create the situation you describe. Don't know how to fix it if the counter's on except by demolishing the top drawer.

I am in awe.
