It's a shock, isn't it?

I've never joined. I'm afraid they'll put me on every mailing list for companies selling stuff seniors might want.

Prepare for TONS of junk mail... you will have to be persistent to get yourself removed, especially from the insurance solicitations.

Uh.. guess I will have to watch my mailbox now. I turn 50 in August too.

We are AARP members and don't get that much junk mail... I've gotten more from ordering stuff through catalogs.

we havn't gotten that much either..we've used the card while traveling for about 10% off room rates..i also enjoy the magazines...

my uncle carries the supplemental insurace...

I signed up for AARP cause I get $50 off upcoming Aug trip.

I joined AARP (reluctantly). I enjoy their magazine and discounts.

That used to make me so mad....I'd have to tear them in pieces and throw them away....LOL

I should have tore them up and sent them back in their stamped envelopes and told them I'd let them know when "I" think I'm old enough to get their mail...

I think I'm there...hehe

But I still throw them away.

I'm 54 and they have never contacted me. I wouldn't pay to join anyway.

I won't pay to join either... no point to it.

DH joined when we got a new car. If he was an AARP member, he got $1000 off. So he went online in the dealership and signed up for three years. That was 5 years ago....

Their magazine/newsletters have had next to nothing in them of interest to us. We are about to the point to immediately trash them....

As far as discounts go, I do just as well with AAA, etc.

I've been an AARP member for many years.

It doesn't cost much, and the AARP magazine is the only magazine I know of that has articles that I actually find interesting. I, for one, have no interest in fashion, makeup, and child rearing, which most women's magazines are full of!

We also have our car insurance through AARP.

DH didn't want to join 12 years ago. Then he found out we would save about $50 to $60 a year on auto and home insurance if we were members. So he "let" me sign him up and I carried his card so he wouldn't be "old".

Yes, AARP starts when you're around fifty. They are obnoxiously persistent in their solicitations.
I don't know how many times I stuffed the return envelope and sent it back to them declining.
I also don't like their politics, so for that reason alone refuse to deal with them.

I carry my small AARP travel discount card in my wallet. Both my wife and I are senior citizens and that card cuts about 10% off motel bills when we travel (at participating motels).

IMO, AARP was a good idea...once. Now it just shills for various insurance agencies and travel 'discounts'. Politicians use it for their own ends, claiming it 'represents' Seniors. (Not this one.)

We've used the Costco travel department for travel discounts, car rentals, etc.

I don't believe I'll join. It was a shock, as was mentioned, to see their card with my name on it.
