Sophie is having surgery next week

She has some sort of cyst on the bridge of her nose that she's had since birth. Doctors in the past have said it's no big deal, and to just keep an eye on it. It leaks gunk and gets infected periodically, so when I see it puffing up, I have to squeeze it like a zit to drain it. She's never been self conscious of it or anything. She thinks it makes her unique. Whenever anyone asks her what it is, she answers, "It's my special nose hole". :)

Lately it's been getting gunkier, and she hates when I have to squeeze it. We went to the doctor about it and he suggested having it surgically removed. She was all for it. A couple of weeks ago she saw the pediatric plastic surgeon, and he says it may not go into the bone, but it likely does - he'll find out for sure when he operates. He also says it'll get worse as she gets older if not fixed now.

She's slightly nervous. I'm a wreck. I hate the thought of her being put to sleep, and the pain afterward. Of course, when I talk about it to her I don't let her know I'm stressing about it.

If you'd keep her (and me!) in your thoughts and prayers, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I sure will, Nicole! I know - it's always so scary when it's one of your kids. That being said - kids are pretty darn tough. Betch $$ that she takes it all in stride a whole lot more than her parents will!

I hope that with the arrival of the new grandbaby, good things keep on coming your way from now on!! Congratulations to the granddaughter and have a wonderful time. It is so special the first time you hold that precious grandchild. I was fortunate and was there at the birth of my first grandson. Thanks for updating us! Here's hoping her headaches go away as quickly as possible. She's a brave young woman. I don't know but the first thing I thought of was addressing Christmas cards! I've about given them up as I never seem to get it done...what a good year for you all to be in touch with everyone! I was thinking what I could use help with (lol) and I thought about some help organizing all those garden and especially daylily photos...maybe you have the same? Another thing, if she starts to feel up to it (this may be a bit)...is to volunteer at a local library or school to help kids with reading. Most schools can really use the help. I remember just sitting with kids helping them read...the teachers were very grateful as they seldom have the time to work one on one with kids who need a bit of extra help. No bending or lifting...and really makes your day to get those smiles! Well, hope you don't mind my putting my thoughts here! Good luck with everything and again, I'm so happy that she's home, it's over and went well.

LOL Joyful! Thank you everyone for all the good wishes. What a day ahead of us! Last night suddenly the kitchen sink plugged up. It was working just fine, even gurgled as it drained. We have a plumber coming this morning. Then DH has to work today, and our realtor called with a showing during dinner hour. That means I have to have the house ready for showing by myself. To top that off, I am feeling like a SLUG! The last time I had my blood thinning med was Sunday evening and my blood is now thicker then usual. I was slow before, but now I am a real slug! Sophie is your daughter? Sorry, I'm not up on all this. Sounds like you are doing the right thing, just get it over with and hopefully that will be the end of it. Would that be leaving any kind of scarring?

She'll do fine. They are so good these days about making surgeries and things painless. Once it's over with you both will be so glad.

Poor Mom! She'll do fine. She probably won't hurt beyond needing Tylenol in a very short time. And if there is pain...there are drugs! Very wise to get this seen to now.

Poor Soph (and you)! I'm sure she wil be fine and it sounds like it will be a quick surgery. From everything you say about her she seems like such a cool girl "It's my special nose hole"! lol

Your Sophie is a kid after my heart. My oldest son was born with a quarter size dark brown birthmark on his cheek. We had it removed the summer between first & second grade because it began to change. He threw a fit because we were going to take his "big freckle" away. He actually liked it! (he got over it in time)

She'll be fine, and it's much better to have this taken care of sooner, rather than later. The younger you are, the smaller the scar. And a cyst can become much more infected than what you're dealing with now.

Don't tell her it "won't hurt". It will. But it won't be terrible, either. She'll most likely be only "achy" and "ouchy" and not in genuine pain. Please be honest with her, and let her know what will happen - Your nose will be a bit sore for a few days, etc. - and keep your (terrified, OMG my baby!) concerns to yourself. I had them too, LOL. My son had surgery at about 6, and it about killed me, but he sailed through just fine. So will Sophie!!

Awwww, I love how she has handled comments about the cyst so well. Bless her heart. It will be good to have it gone though, no more worries with infections and all. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

I saw the picture that you posted on the make-over thread. OH MY GOSH!! She is so grown up now!! Where does the time go??

Prayers going out for you and Sophie. I remember when my daughter was 5 and had to have her tonsils out I was a hysterical wreck when they went through those operating room doors. I'll pray very hard for you Nicole. I know you'll do better than I did.
