Sophie is having surgery next week

She has some sort of cyst on the bridge of her nose that she's had since birth. Doctors in the past have said it's no big deal, and to just keep an eye on it. It leaks gunk and gets infected periodically, so when I see it puffing up, I have to squeeze it like a zit to drain it. She's never been self conscious of it or anything. She thinks it makes her unique. Whenever anyone asks her what it is, she answers, "It's my special nose hole". :)

Lately it's been getting gunkier, and she hates when I have to squeeze it. We went to the doctor about it and he suggested having it surgically removed. She was all for it. A couple of weeks ago she saw the pediatric plastic surgeon, and he says it may not go into the bone, but it likely does - he'll find out for sure when he operates. He also says it'll get worse as she gets older if not fixed now.

She's slightly nervous. I'm a wreck. I hate the thought of her being put to sleep, and the pain afterward. Of course, when I talk about it to her I don't let her know I'm stressing about it.

If you'd keep her (and me!) in your thoughts and prayers, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I sure will, Nicole! I know - it's always so scary when it's one of your kids. That being said - kids are pretty darn tough. Betch $$ that she takes it all in stride a whole lot more than her parents will!

LOL Joyful! Thank you everyone for all the good wishes. What a day ahead of us! Last night suddenly the kitchen sink plugged up. It was working just fine, even gurgled as it drained. We have a plumber coming this morning. Then DH has to work today, and our realtor called with a showing during dinner hour. That means I have to have the house ready for showing by myself. To top that off, I am feeling like a SLUG! The last time I had my blood thinning med was Sunday evening and my blood is now thicker then usual. I was slow before, but now I am a real slug! LOL By tomorrow evening I should be doing double-time! Do you think they will leave me alone to watch Survivor!?! Tom said he will post and let you know how it went. Hayjud

Hope the surgery goes well. My MIL got her arm caught in a school bus lift and besides a small amount of numbness in a finger she has recovered well from her surgery. Maybe she had the same doctor as you?? If you don't mine walking and if you don't get caught up in road construction on 40/61, the St. Louis Zoo is one of the best in the US. You might also want to see the Cathedral Basilica which has one of the largest amounts of mosaics in the world. It really is quite stunning. Downtown St. Charles (Main St) is nice for shopping.. it still has the old brick roads and historic houses. A couple nice casinos there too. St. Charles is just outside of St. Louis. I've been with the same company since 1989, and so we are very familiar with each other by now, but it was not like that in the beginning. When I first met my boss, I felt an instant rapport with her and felt like we were meant to be together. When I looked at her furniture, I thought to myself, "These are the exact same proportions I would use," and so I knew from the beginning that we had a compatible design style/sense. It took her a little longer than it did me to realize this, but once she did, she trusted me with all new designs. Kevin has some good friends at work, and a couple of the them live not too far from us. One has offered to help cook and help with grocery shopping, if necessary, but I think I am recovered enough by now to handle shopping. I just cannot get anything heavy yet, but that will come in due time. As for the garden, I will hire help probably in October. It would nice to have him sooner, but he is my friend in Sacramento, and I have to work with his schedule. I don't trust the local landscapers here. I could possibly find a good landscape architect here, but that would be expensive and more than we need right now, although I'll keep it in mind for the future. It depends on what we end up doing in Palm Springs. I think Kevin will be much happier when we can buy a second home in the Palm Springs area. We'll probably end up in Cathedral City (Palm Springs adjacent but not walking distance), and hopefully Cathedral Gulch. This won't start happening until next year, but it's something to look forward do that I think might help Kevin feel better. What is odd is that so many people ask us if we are twins, but I am 15 years (+3 weeks) older, and I think this must be very insulting to Kevin. First people ask us if we are brothers. Then they ask if we are twins. Then they ask which one is older, which is the worst question of all. I've afraid that Kevin is going to appear even older after this ordeal, but if he can have a week-end house in PS, then I think he won't mind so much. I don't know yet how I will look after my full recovery, but I am keeping plastic surgery as an option. I've had hospital technicians tell me that if you live in Los Angeles, then it is almost mandatory. When I had a bike accident that cut my forehead, they would not release me from St. Johns until I interviewed with a plastic surgeon. Back then (around 1996) I did not care about having a small scar or two on my forehead, and now it's barely visible anyway. If anything, what I can see of it makes me look more rugged, I think. I wear bike helmets now. Sorry for rambling - I'm having trouble sleeping some nights, and after just having seen Kevin, I am feeling even more anxious. I think I will be able to help him with most of what he needs, but he is very private and introverted and often likes to be by himself. I hope he will spend his alone time in the back yard instead of his bedroom, but for now, I know it is painful for him to sit in a chair, and I expect that to last for a while. I could see the evidence of the surgery that had been done, having to remove part (or all) of his sphincter, which I mentioned before but had not seen evidence of before. He's going to be on disability for about three months, I think, but since he has been paying disability insurance for many years, he will get paid pretty much his normal salary - from the insurance. However, they deduct Californian disability payments, as California is fairly generous with these payments, and so Kevin will have to apply for those as well - since the payments will be deducted whether he receives them or not. He cannot file for California disability until he gets out of the hospital, but I think he knows how to do this.

Sophie is your daughter? Sorry, I'm not up on all this. Sounds like you are doing the right thing, just get it over with and hopefully that will be the end of it. Would that be leaving any kind of scarring?

She'll do fine. They are so good these days about making surgeries and things painless. Once it's over with you both will be so glad.

Poor Mom! She'll do fine. She probably won't hurt beyond needing Tylenol in a very short time. And if there is pain...there are drugs! Very wise to get this seen to now.

Sending Sophie good thoughts. My DD had a cyst on her eyebrow taken off... she did fine, but does have a tiny scar there.

Poor Soph (and you)! I'm sure she wil be fine and it sounds like it will be a quick surgery. From everything you say about her she seems like such a cool girl "It's my special nose hole"! lol

Your Sophie is a kid after my heart. My oldest son was born with a quarter size dark brown birthmark on his cheek. We had it removed the summer between first & second grade because it began to change. He threw a fit because we were going to take his "big freckle" away. He actually liked it! (he got over it in time)

She'll be fine, and it's much better to have this taken care of sooner, rather than later. The younger you are, the smaller the scar. And a cyst can become much more infected than what you're dealing with now.

Don't tell her it "won't hurt". It will. But it won't be terrible, either. She'll most likely be only "achy" and "ouchy" and not in genuine pain. Please be honest with her, and let her know what will happen - Your nose will be a bit sore for a few days, etc. - and keep your (terrified, OMG my baby!) concerns to yourself. I had them too, LOL. My son had surgery at about 6, and it about killed me, but he sailed through just fine. So will Sophie!!

Awwww, I love how she has handled comments about the cyst so well. Bless her heart. It will be good to have it gone though, no more worries with infections and all. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

I saw the picture that you posted on the make-over thread. OH MY GOSH!! She is so grown up now!! Where does the time go??

Prayers going out for you and Sophie. I remember when my daughter was 5 and had to have her tonsils out I was a hysterical wreck when they went through those operating room doors. I'll pray very hard for you Nicole. I know you'll do better than I did.
