A VERY unusual herd of deer.........whitetails yes, but more..

Wait `till you see these unusual deer! Location is near Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, near the border with Michigan's U.P.

Maybe the deer that are most common east of the Mississippi are more agile than those in the West. Here, if the intent is to use ordinary fencing to protect against deer damage, it's recommended that the fence be at least 6 ft tall, preferably taller. For a number of years now, farmers and other rural residents in this area have constructed anti-deer fences that slant at a 45 degree angle. It's a design that's effective because, while deer can jump quite high and can jump considerable distances, they're apparently unable to execute jumps that simultaneously attain height AND cover distance. I'm linking to a WVU release on slanted fences with specs for building one. Obviously, slanted fences aren't a practical solution for most, but they're interesting as an example of the extreme measures taken by some to control an ongoing problem. Sweets, you should come to the South west corner of the state, you'll see more deer than you can shake a stick at. BTW, you can thank the lawyers and state laws for people posting their land no trespassing. If someone trespasses on your land and gets hurt they can sue you for damages. Not everyone has lots of money for homeowners insurance. OHIO on the other hand has a no fault law, so if you are trespassing and get hurt, too bad! I agree with the wrongness of the destruction of farmland, but until the land was cleared of trees, there were even fewer deer around. Deer are not normally forest dwellers. They like open woods. We have mostly trees on our lot, but the deer are everywhere, spreading ticks everywhere they go. We live in the boondocks and have 60 acres and only one house on it. We haven't cleared anything for housing projects. And yet the deer are a menace here. It's true you can't hunt just anywhere, but there are gamelands that you can go to. We have game lands right near us as well. Unless you want to buy your own property and hunt, you're stuck. And, pay property taxes and have to get a hunting license anyway. As for 'ruining' it for the next generation, I don't agree with that. The 'next generation' would rather play video games than go outside. Plus, people have trespassed on our place numerous times, many of them are RUDE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO REGARD FOR ANYTHING or ANYONE, and why should we just let them do what they want on our place? They trespass, they are rude, they gut them and leave the guts there and are jerks on top of it all, why let them hunt for free? As for hitting deer, they run right into your car LOTS of times, and NEITHER my DH or I speed at night. Deer are DESTRUCTIVE. They are so bad here that people must be shooting them from their cars because the game commission is making decoy deer and lying in wait for people to go and shoot them. They are a BIG problem. Just be lucky you haven't wrecked all your vehicles because of them.

I love growing HERBS, if for no other reason that just to have them around, so that when others visit my gardens, & they touch or brush up against them, they are enticed by the wonderful scents, while they view of all the other flowers & plants, etc.. [*FAVORITES*= ROSEMARY, DILL, FENNEL, CILANTRO, LEMON BALM, SAGE, MARJORAM, BASIL/S= Sweet, Lemon, Lime, Licorice, Cinnamon, Thai, etc., MINT/S= Peppermint, English Tea Mint, Apple Mint, Grapefruit Mint, Chocolate Mint, etc., GARLIC CHIVES, AGASTACHE, MONARDA, EPAZOTE, etc., etc.] DAMES ROCKET (Wild Phlox) is a very appreciated re-seeder here, with its' lovely lilac scented early blooms, & it has never been invasive for me ever. Also, I love growing DATURAs for their wonderful scents & huge blooms, especially at night! (Poisonous!) In addition, I adore growing BRUGMANSIAS as well, although they are not winter hardy in WI, so each fall I remove all the remaining flowers & leaves, & trim all the branches down to approximately 4' or so, & then belt together all the 'trunks', then have my 'muscle-men' bring the plants indoors, & store them in a cool, but not freezing basement, for winter, & then bring them out again in the spring, after all frosts have past. They do get HUGE & HEAVY after a few years of this, & they take a LOT of fertilizers to get them to the fantastic 10'x10' 50+ bloom bushes/trees (& to maintain them = Nitrogen + Phosphorous + Potassium + Magnesium + Lime + Sulfur). The white deer at Seneca army base are interesting. I've seen them and taken pictures at only a few feet.Thought the fence. NYS built a new prison using part of the base. The fence was opened to allow for construction and some of these deer wondered out. So now we have the white gene mixing with our free ranging deer.This white gene is not limited to white tail deer. There are white moose in Alaska and white black bear off British Columbia coast.

I live in WI. These deer are well known. They even appear in Native Indian lore. I had no idea anyone wrote a whole book about them. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm also from Wisconsin but not this particular area. We also have the albino deer here on occasion. I've known a few who have captured pictures of the animals on their outdoor still cameras and motion cameras. In my area it is not a whole herd but individual deer. The people that I know that have these on their land say that the "normal" deer won't accept the albino deer and they have a tendancy to stay away from them. This doesn't seem to be the case with the deer in the video. I wonder if it is because it is a herd and not just one deer?

The animals are protected here and anyone caught shooting one will get stiff penalities. My neighbor hit one with her car during a snowstorm. The neighbor said it is quite an ordeal because they ask lots of questions, take the animal and run tests to make sure you didn't shoot it but you really did hit it with a car. In her case, the animal was given to a museum of some type. They let her take a picture of it but that was about it.

I take the blame for the booboo in the title; I meant to type an unusual herd, but I don't know why the URL didn't work. I got this in my Yahoo email. Worked fine for me.

Years ago I saw what was called an albino deer that was shot here. It was hunting season. That deer wasn't white/white, but almost and did have pink eyes.

Don't know how any body could shoot one.

No, not really odd. This happens often with news links.

For instance usually a big story of 'breaking news' will be on the "front page" of a news site the day it comes out. Subsequently the "front page" has a new story the next day. If you sent a link out to friends to that page a different news story will be there and anyone you sent a link to will be very confused about your message.

The original article will be archived with a different address to access it and this new address is permanent. A little plunking around with the HTTP can find it.

The other thing that can happen with smaller websites is when someone starts a mass emailing campaign linking to their website. This can cause a server crash. Some owners pull their sites temporarily when this happens. Their website can't take all the traffic. Then there is the issue of bandwidth too. Website owners hate sudden mass traffic.

There are 'work arounds' for this too.
