I'm trying to find out where to buy the big balls that you exercise with. Anyone know?

I got mine at Walmart. I've also seen them at K-Mart and Sears.

hahahahah, you crack me up Gayle. I got mine at Big 5, a sporting good store. You can find them everywhere these days. I love to stretch my back out over mine too.

How much of a leaf cover do you need for that? I don't really know. This is the first time I am planting in the front yard woods, after picking up sticks and limbs, trimming up some trees, pulling up tree seedlings, pulling up 'some' vines, and digging out lots and lots of May Apples, and raking aside all the leaf cover. Stringing the rows and doing the actual planting is the easiest part of the whole planting experience. I'd say the leaf cover is at least 6" or so. I kept watching the weatherunderground on the computer all day, hoping it would get warm. Even though it wasn't warm at 4 PM (was just 34 though it was sunny) I headed out to get a few planted. Surprisingly, I wasn't cold, the soil was wet, but not clumpy, my hands didn't get cold, and I managed to plant 15 little bags, 47 total bulbs. so all those from the front yard (city tree) went to the city for composting. How I wish I had trees that weren't all in the woods or at the edge of the woods. All the leaves at the edges of the yard are full of sticks and twigs. I used to sometimes go to friend's houses and do their leaves, just to get to bring them all home for the veggie garden. I've got this wonderful leaf shredder that reduces them 13 to 1, turning leaves into what I call brown gold. I think the little willow leaves should be fine. Last year I remember "discovering" that the open areas were frozen solid while those with some cover were not. I might be able to exploit that some year if I knew what to aim for. How deep? I wonder if you couldn't just cover an area with either clear plastic or black plastic to keep the warm in and the freezing cold out, thus lengthening the planting season so you could get in on the late sales, like from B and B's.

I was thrilled to track down the artists for the blue balls - called "Skyball" and ask my question about what keeps people from rolling them down the hills. galcho, computer or gardening, that's a good question, I think I fell in love with plants when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. My grandpa had a cottage garden at their summer place where I used to spend my holiday each year. I'd follow him around while he watered all his plants by hand. All the water had to be pumped from a well. My memories are of Foxgloves, Cup and saucer Campanula, Carnations, a pergola smothered in fragrant roses and cabbages as big as soccer balls. I was hooked for life. To me a garden is a place of contentment, a place joy, when I actually find the right place for the plant I've just obtained, without the foggiest of where I'm going to put it. The garden to me is a lifetime dream. It's also good therapy, when you're really p....d off about someone or something, go pull weeds, it really is amazing how they can take wings. Well…it’s done, but it was a huge ordeal. In my yard, there is about 8 inches to a foot of topsoil, and solid dense clay under that, that is also full of rocks. It’s why I have difficulty planting anything large. I had told him that in advance, but it was not something he had dealt with before (this was friend doing the work, like a trade; I will help him install a non-standard door later). The auger was useless after a foot. I have a post hole digger too, that was no better. The clay had to be chipped out bit by bit, and larger rocks pried out til the depth got to the 2 feet he wanted. So instead of 2 deep narrow holes, we had 2 cone-shaped holes, maybe 16" in diameter. We moved the big hibiscus, and some lilies, and I had put stakes marking other plants to protect them. But that plan went by the wayside quickly, as digging those holes seemed to require more and more room. I was supposed to be just an observer, due to my knee surgery. But I and another friend ended up helping too, which flattened the area even more. I should have removed all the plants within a 3 foot radius of each hole! We got the posts level, mixed and poured in the concrete. Then the position of the posts had to be endlessly tweaked, which took 3 of us. I wanted to “hide” the square posts behind 2 of the outermost uprights. The plan was to let the posts set while we had lunch (it was then 3:30, and we had started at 12:30). But we decided to place the gate immediately, while we could still move the posts slightly. Which turned out to be a good thing. Again, more tweaking of angles and leveling. Had to shim one end with bricks, as (you might be able to see in the above photo) the pointed ends at the bottom are different lengths. Got it clamped on with 2 thick U bolts at the bottom and muffler clamps at the top. I will paint those soon. Tomorrow I will have to clear out stray gravel and clay pieces from around it, which will be challenging considering I can’t kneel on my right knee. I will come up with a new place for the hibiscus, which I put into a large pot temporarily. I have a non-performing Endless Summer hydrangea at the sunnier end of the bed, which never grows more than a 16” tall (and doesn’t bloom). I think I’ll put the hibiscus there, where it won’t block the view of the gate. The thing I am worried about now is how compacted the soil became. I don’t know what to do about that, if anything is possible. The plants that had not yet emerged might not be able to get through. The ones that were emerging in that 3 foot radius are largely smashed. Some tall salvias, liatris. Lots of crushed irises. I think I will fork those out and move them. I don’t know if it would be advisable to try to stick pitchfork in and loosen the soil in general. And/or just add some bagged topsoil on top of everything, and call it a day. Buy some new plants. ;) I know I will like the results in the end, once things start growing around it.

I got such a giggle when I read the heading...LOL

I used to use one that I bought at K-mart, then I got vertigo and had to quit. My daughter is using the ball and loves to sit on it when at the computer.

I used to have one of those. I sat on it when using the computer and also liked to do the backwards stretches. One day while I was at work some of the grandkids came over and thought it was a toy. They had it outside and it got hung up on a barbed wire fence.
I haven't thought of getting one in years, but would like to get another one. Thanks for the reminder.

LOL, Gayle, made me think of my husband and his downhill ride last fall.

Here we were, riding along, when we (buddy Mel and I) something shiny on the side of the road. Turn around to investigate. About a softball size shiny stainless steel ball. Of course we picked it up, but had no intention to carry it far. We were on bicycles...

When we caught up with the others, Mel presented it to my husband Jerry, with the words, hope you don't need it. LOL

Jerry decided to haul it along... He was riding his recumbent bicycle, and put it on the seat, between his legs. He hauled it all the way up one hill, where we have all hit pretty high speeds going down on the other side, in previous years.

Jerry got a new high that day. Now, it is the talk of the club... Jerry got a new high speed on Porum hill, cause of his balls. :)

Now, back to the original question: Gayle, I bet you can find it at Academy sport store, or any other sport store in your vicinity.

OH Orie!! Glad we didn't start with that one. We'd have been pulled for sure!!!

Got mine on line with my work out cd's but just about any sporting good store should have them. Be careful at first and inflate it to your size so you don't fall or strain your knees. Just sitting on them will give your core a workout. I love that thing.

I bought mine at Kmart. They are near the yoga stuff. The balls are used for pilates. If you would like to 'test drive' them, go to your YMCA and ask to take a complimentary pilates class. The Y has a whole bunch of balls for the class.

I've checked in a couple of times today re: post title and status and am glad to see it's going.

Truthfully, I have two big inflatable balls, one totally deflated under the bed since one of the cats clawed it, the other nicely resting in a corner, underinflated since I haven't got around to inflating it to the proper size. I don't think I've intended any double-entrendres above, but by all means let me know if I have.

I believe I bought the balls at Ross and/or Marshall's.

BTW, TMI for some...

... DH seems to have the BB affliction, but it in no way does it positively or negatively influence performance and/or attraction, as far as I know, and I'm not interested in starting a controlled scientific experiment, mind you... ;)

I use to jump on big balls when I was younger all the time for the exercise. I haven't done that kind of exercise in a long time, but I think you can find those big balls in the sporting section of any athletic store.

I've decided I won't get any big balls cause I'd need 911 after trying to blow up the darn thing (assuming this is a manual job). teehee

Seriously, is a pump included or do you have to find a young person to inflate the ball for you?

Yes, most of them come with a pump.

I got mine at Target that came in a kit with the pump, ball, stand, hand-weights, and dvd. I think it was about $30 for everything.

OK, let's go on... No, their basement has no balls... they are hung, in carton packets on the shelves. Usually in the "exercises for the home" area.

Something similar when I was a kid was the hippity-hop but this one had a handle and you sat and hopped. The new exercise balls are for core training mostly. We used them in Physical Therapy yrs. ago for patient's that had back surgery. You can fall off so be careful.

I just know this will be it...

My husband has two big balls! I kid you not! He never uses them. One is blue, the other purple.

yes, I know.... exercise balls! He's supposed to use them for his back exercises. =o) He got two so we could both use them.

LOL, this post inspired me to get a "big ball" of my own.

Went to Wal-Mart today and picked one up.

They are $10 and come with a plastic foot pump and a small booklet showing basic ball exercises.

The Wal-Mart ball looks like the ones in Maddielee's post.

So far, so good. It's great to use to stretch out your back.
