I use propane for both. The stove uses far less propane than the heater does.

I heat and cook with propane. The furnace uses a fair bit of gas (especially this winter) but the cooktop uses almost none. What ever propane I have left at the end of winter lasts until I get the bottle filled again in fall of the next year. Years ago I had a mobile home with a gas range and I had a small 20 lb propane bottle for it. When it ran out, I'd just swap bottles. It still used far less propane than a gas grill uses.

We have a propane furnace, a propane cooktop, and have a back-up generator directly connected to the propane tank. Admittedly, our tank is huge - we've never, ever had any issues about supply.
My GC has all the above, running off his propane tank, plus he just connected his outdoor grill too, because he was fed up of having to refill the small tank.

Talk to your propane supplier about tank size and average usage: they'll know what a cooker uses, and can advise.

I don't heat with it, but have a dryer & gas fireplace. Why would he not want to cook with it as well?

For the life of me, I can't imagine why this would be an issue. In the past we've had both on natural gas and now we do with propane. Why on earth should it matter?

I have propane hot-air furnace, propane tankless water heater, propane cooktop, and even propane gas logs (used occasionally). The furnace uses far more than the others combined.

Propane isn't cheap in the Baltimore-Philadelphia area. But, to save money, it would make more sense installing a woodstove then not getting a gas range.

Many people in my neighborhood have propane for heat and cooking. I only ran out once. I had no idea how much energy it took to heat a pool and I then went to turn on my cooktop and nothin. The propane guy said I need to warn him if I'm going to do that so he can come more often for fill ups. I saw the bill and decided I didn't need to have a heated pool :)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Did he explain why he sees this as a problem, because it makes no sense. You already have the tank and the delivery. Why use something inferior (electric) to cook?

We use oil to heat but propane to cook. The tank was filled 4 years ago and is still at least half full. So, we have used less than 150 gallons in 4 years, and I cook a lot.

Now, HEATING with propane is what doesn't make sense. Propane only generates about half as many btus per gallon as oil, so unless propane is 50% or less the cost of oil it doesn't make sense to use propane. Propane should only be used in places that require little heat (either due to climate or because they are only occupied occassionally duing the heating season, like a vacation house). But they are often installed by builder trying to save themselves (not the homeowner) money. Propane systems are much cheaper than oil systems. But the actual cost to use them is much higher.

Well, his main reason is that it would deplete our heat source. Sounds like, however, they they acutually use very little!

We've run out several times. Our tank gets buried by snow, so its a pain to dig out, check levels etc. The delivery guy won't do it. We already have a wood burning furnace that we supplement with so we can just use one tank of propane in the winter.

The suggestion of calling our propane supplier is a good one. DH cannot argue with their statistics! Thanks everyone!

We have 2 100lbs tanks for cooktop & dryer we empty one every 3-4 months - I think. It's expensive too, but we have oil for the furnace, that's a killer too.

I have natural gas for heating and cooking. IF I didn't have that luxury, I would consider induction for cooking. I still may eventually try induction. I had the house wired for induction behind the stove just in case. When we were building the induction cooktops pickins were slim. Now everybody has them. I'm sure prices will come down.

Actually I was on the phone with our propane company a week or so ago to double-check delivery and I asked her about fuel consumption for our stove, which is new with last summer's remodel. She said that even for people on one of those year-round pay plans or on a regular delivery they don't change anything because the difference is negligible. So it hasn't changed anything but BOY do I love cooking with the new stove over my previous electric smooth top!!

In the interests of accuracy, I looked for some data about fuel efficiency for various types of fuel. Because it isn't just about the btu's produced from a gallon of one or the other. A lot depends on the efficiency of the furnace: my new propane furnace for example, has an efficiency of 95%, whereas the old oil one was only 65% if we were lucky. Prices per gallon will vary at different times too. Some years one will be cheaper, other years, another. The key is to get a really efficient boiler.

Incidentally, when the OP calls the propane company, it's worth checking who actually owns the tank: in our case, they own the tank. If we needed a larger one, they would replace it. Also, once you've been with them for a while, they get a feel for how quickly you use it up, and may offer automatic top ups/refills, based on prior usage data.

We have a propane cooktop and two fireplaces that we use for supplementary heat. I'm kind of with the others who can't quite understand what your husband's issue with it is.

We love having the gas cooktop to cook with, and it uses almost no propane. We have to check the tank level regularly (we have to call the gas company to set up a refill), and the only time the needle really budges is when we're using the fireplaces.

We decided to buy our own tanks, we have two 100lb tanks for each with a regulator that shows when they are empty. We can easily take the tanks in ourselves. Because our power goes out fairly often, we wanted to always have extra tanks.

We use propane for heat and cooking. I think we have a 1000 lb tank buried in the yard which they check/top-off a couple of times per year. Dh snow-blows a path from the driveway to the tank so access isn't an issue.

I also have propane for heating and cooking. I don't think cooking uses much propane at all. I can tell that by seeing how much propane gas we use between the time when heater turns off at late spring and heater backs on at late fall-- very little. So it's not cooking that deletes your propane gas, it's heating.

Does you propane supplier has a program to deliver propane on schedule?

Sue36-the drawback to oil, at least in my area, is the huge liability factor with leaking oil tanks. New homes here have propane, natural gas, geothermal or electric heat pump systems.

We have propane for heating, fireplace, and cooking. I love the gas cooktop! Fireplace uses alot of propane so we are careful how we use it.

I just wanted to mention, in our last house when we remodeled the kit I wanted a gas range. I could not find one propane dealer that would set up and deliver propane for only one item. In this house I have a gas range and back up generator.
