Too cute!
Your cat must be overfed.

Overfed? Probably! But he's a good mouser. Rarely a day goes by when he doesn't drag something up here...mouse, rat, bird...

Thanks, jibd! The cats were eating Passiflora incarnata and also violas. I found cats on both of those and I also fed them both and they thrived on both. I didn't like how the passionvine was popping up all over the place, though, so I got rid of it (I hope) and will be planting 'Incense' (in a pot in case it would be invasive) and 'Lady Margaret'. I had planted violets into a big pot that I had dug out of our yard for the VFs to eat, but they'd crawl off of those and back onto the 'Black Sorbet' violas that I had gotten online (seeds) last spring. So I bought more of those again this year. I plan of putting some in containers and planting some in the garden. Yes, I can imagine that the frits would be hard to find in the violet patches in your yard, as I had a hard enough time finding them last year on the violas that I had in the garden. They seem to be able to blend in really well, which I guess is a good thing. Hopefully your P. incarnata will come back to life. I'd say it will because it's early for it to pop up through the soil just yet...it would be early for it here in PA anyway and I'm also in zone 6. I was in zone 6a but since they changed the charts, now I'm in 6b. Best of luck with the Variegated Fritillaries! Cathy

Hmmmmm.....your vines should have bloomed by now. But regardless, yes, you can dig up the sprouts. I usually dig mine up in the fall and grow them in a container until the next spring. I baby them while they're in the container, because I figure they really don't have much if any root of their own to support them, probably having gotten their nourishment from the mother plant. If they've made a big sprout, I cut that back, too, to reduce stress on the plant. Digging them up in summer might work if you put them in a container, then put that container in a very shady place, so the plant won't be stressed by the intense sunshine we're getting now. Then you could plant them out either this fall or next spring. I can't remember if I've dug up any in summer or not. I've got some A. fimbriata that came from seed I think ?you and Mary in Arkansas sent me - I planted the rest of the seeds in my woods, hoping they'll grow there. The A. fimbriata plants get eaten down to nothing immediately, as a matter of fact, there are young cats eating on them now. The pipevine swallowtail cats love A. serpentaria and A. fimbriata, but they just don't get big enough to support many caterpillars. You'd have to have acres of them to do the job! :) Sherry

They're here year round, Ronnie. I used to feed birds all year until the summer a bear killed my dog. The game warden said I was encouraging bears by hanging bird feeders, and so now I stop feeding in April and resume in November. I miss seeing the migrating flocks! Some people feed all year and take the feeders in at night, but so far I haven't tried that. I'd probably have to battle a raccoon for them if I waited until dark.....

We bought Hamsters for the Kiddos long ago and the Cats watched us play with them. Next, day the Cats bought in live mice from the field. Like..."You like rodents here are some more to add to your collection". "Lots more where that came from".

I just looked outside and sure enough, he did it again today! One thing is certain: if ya live in the country, ya gotta have cats! I'm glad at least one of mine is a good mouser! :-)

Whoa, that looks like a packrat to me, Rita! lol I hate to say this, but our mice are so much cuter than yours. *sticks out tongue*

That rodent doesn't really look too worried about things. I wonder why?

I think it's a rat, too, Flamey, but "cat and mouse" seemed a better topic than "cat and rat." And I was waiting for you to mention the famous "rabbit gut" pictures that got me Disney'd. LMBO!

I think the rodent is praying that the game will end soon. Why do cats always torture their prey?! :-)

Oh, believe me, it popped right into my mind, girl!

Maybe he'll make a quick get-away and live another day. Hey, I can hope!

Awww poor little mousie. We live in the country too. I never get a whole mouse, only the guts. So disgusting!

My friends cat used to just bring the mousie skulls and line them up on the doorstep....yuck. But she wasn't offended in the least, as she used to say, kitty was bringing them to her as a present.

So funny! That mouse wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. He should have run away during the rest period. My old neighbor's cat use to bring us presents or pieces of presents, if you know hwt I mean.
