Without knowing what area you live in, the question is like asking if I am too fat. Too fat for what purposes? Or am I too tall? By whose standards.

For N. Texas the average 3-ton system replacement will cost between $2500-5000. This includes both heating and cooling. You will never find any real realiable prices for HVAC equipment with the exception of Goodman on the web. All of the companies are afraid of Goodman's pricing. All other companies just close thier eyes and 'cry unfair' everytime they read anything about Goodman. The loudest, are the smaller companies. They try to make superiour claims and never substantate thier claims. There are smaller companies that try to come close to Goodman pricing, but usually fall short of the mark. Goodman has changed thier pricing structure recently, and is trying to look more like the other companies. But when the really big companies try to look like all of the rest, there is a underlying factor that the average guy misses. The Taft Hartley act, in all of it's glorius admendments is against the really big guys in any field. It is designed to hinder the big guy and give smaller companies a break. I would imagine Goodman is so large, that they fall into the bad guy side of the act, so current pricing is an attempt to look normal. Microsoft and Everready are other bad guys under this legislation.

Sorry about that, however, thanks for the rapid reply. I live in NJ and the house is a two story about 2200sf with one zone heat and two zone a/c and fairly newer windows. I am not replacing any of the a/c...just the gas furnace. The contractor said matching the furnace to the a/c is not a problem.

You think heating is bad?? Try pricing out a carpet...almost next to impossible. The carpet manufacturers make a carpet and then label it differently for their various stores. And, of course, the store won't give out the "real" name of the carpet. It's horrible how it's done. But that's another story.

- Barbara, I know that this isn't the "Carpet Forum", but what the heck. For a carpet comparison, you need to know things like material type, face weight, # of twists per square inch, warranties for stain, fade, wear, etc. I was looking for carpet a few years ago and ran into the same issues as you. I wound up spending a lot of time in Home Depot reading the back of the carpet samples and making a list of all the specs to make a comparison. I wound up buying from HD because they were the only ones who broke down the total cost by: X dollars to rip out the old rug, X dollars to dispose of old rug, X dollars for padding, X dollars for carpet, and X dollars to install. All of the other carpet stores gave me one price and that was it. I wound up tearing out the old carpet and padding and disposing of it myself and saving $600. Don't skimp on the padding - it makes the carpet.

The RGRA is a great single stage 90. VERY reliable, quiet, easy to work on. Looks like a good price too. Is the old furnace venting into a chimney? If so, a metal liner should be placed in the chimney for a water heater left in it.

The upgrade to the RGFD is low!! That's the most comfortable heating furnace you can get. The key is having the matching thermostat installed. If they just put it on a Honeywell cheapo, they are greatly crippling the incredible comfort that furnace is capable of.

I am in Los Angeles and was just quoted $4500 for a Rheem 2 1/2 ton heating and airconditioner unit. That includes the crane for removing the old unit off the roof and replacing with the new unit.
