Prologue Sink - A Cautionary Tale of Internet Ordering

I am in the midst of a fast kitchen install for my MIL apartment. I settled on the Kohler Prologue Sink as a way to have wood counters and still allow my mom to continue on using a dish towel to set her handwashed dishes on. I'm a fan of sinks with drainboards but the price difference of such an Elkay sink vs. this Kohler sink are baffling. I chose the Prologue over the Stages because...going from memory here ... I didn't want the hook underneath.

I chose Home Perfect as the online vendor. Pictures show the box as it looked when it arrived. Husband opened the box with a razor knife. There is a scratch in the SS. Husband is sure he didn't not apply enough force nor depth to the knife to cause the damage on the SS. Obviously someone else did.

So here is my lesson to you all. Do not count on the packaging to be sensible. You would think there'd be a piece of cardboard on top of the sink to protect it. Who knows if Kohler's original packaging had such.

I have not pursued the matter with Home Perfect. Should I? I did not inspect the inside of the box before signing for it so I would assume I am SOL.

My guess is that the box was prepacked by Kohler. Someone may have missed the boat on packing there. What did HomePerfect say when you called them? Or have you, yet? Your first response should be to Home Perfect, immediately, to report the problem, not a post to the forum to give caution dealing with the company. IMHO, the true test of good customer service is what they do when something goes wrong. It would be too bad to trash the reputation of a company without even notifying them of the problem, let alone giving them the chance to rectify it.

thanks for the comment. I hope the post didn't come across as a bashing. It isn't meant to be. Just sharing an experience and my ultimate point was to share the care that must be taken opening packages because of course there is a seed of doubt. Did I do that? I will probably call Home Perfect but have been too busy (here's a bash - dealing with ***** and their desire to charge me twice for orders and their inability to return money for cancelled orders...) at the moment.

edweather: I'm with you on the Russets. All the potato dishes I love are far better with them: baked, mashed, French fried, scalloped. The only thing I prefer waxy potatoes for is potato salad. My family loves Russets so much that I used to take them on the plane with me when we vacationed in a cottage on the Florida panhandle. We could never find a decent potato in the little stores down there. (The beef was awful too! We're hopelessly Midwestern.) Of course, Homeland Security put an end to potatoes on the plane. terrybull: According to the sources I've seen (Washington State University, Maine Potato Lady) Nicola is a mid-season variety. Seed Savers Exchange says it is a late season that matures in 90-110 days. I thought late season varieties typically took more than 130 days to mature. Please report back to let us know how yours turn out. I have read that only a few late season varieties will grow stolons with tubers all along the buried stem, which is what you want in a potato tower. Potatoes are like tomatoes in that some are indeterminate and some are determinate. Determinate potatoes flower once and produce one layer of potatoes and die, so they are not suitable for a tower. Indeterminate potato varieties apparently flower continuously throughout the growing season (like yours, edweather?). Most potatoes are determinate. Some potatoes don't actualy bulk up until the weather turns cold. Russet Burbank is a classic indeterminate potato that takes 140-150 days to mature. If I ever do anything like this again, I'm going to look for a potato that takes at least 135 days to harvest. And I think I'll leave it in the ground as long as possible. Whoops. dedtired - I know it sounds like a lot of files, but it really isn't when you count in all the files you get with the software programs like Windows OS, Office and Photoshop. Plus add on's and extentions. It recovered all the files on the hard drive, not just my personal ones. The fun part is that the names of the files were lost so I have to go through each and every one to decided what to keep. It will take me days or even weeks. Ugh! And they might be empty files or junk and corrupted files. Won't know till I open them. compumom, jessyf, triciae - Thanks for the recommendations. I will keep the ones suggested in mind. This one was the first one to actually find something. The others I tried before couldn't find anything at all. DH just bought a new 1 Terra Byte IOMEGA External hard drive 3.0 as a new backup. I am still going burn my PS files and photos onto DVDs as a third backup. Thanks for the replies. Clare

She says, "...I actually have a full-sized kitchen...," but that isn't what we see. There must at least be a sink on the parallel run of the kitchen. Maybe she decided that a Kohler Stages 45 was just the thing for her space? I'm not sure what the definition of "full size" is, but I don't think this is it. May I point out that no one who actually uses a stove for even light duty cooking would put framed silhouettes directly above and behind? And honestly, the sum effect of all the stacked cookware and the appalling amount of paper stuff attached to the fridge is to make this photo look like an introduction to the show Hoarders (I saw a bit of that yesterday while waiting for my Greek wrap). Do you think this is an example of that journalistic fluff that came up the other day? You know, gotta hit those keywords and fill a certain amount of space, and who cares about the content?

Precisely. That's why I went to all this trouble phoning back and forth. I *know* Abt is highly respected (wait, did I actually let drop their name? I was trying to be a little circumspect. Ooops)... and I've had some really exceptional experiences with them. That's why I wasn't so terribly impressed with the "policy violators" page -- showed up my prejudice too. I was perfectly happy to believe the less-reputable folk (did I let their name slip already too?) were on that list, but I became instantly skeptical when I saw Abt. Which isn't fair, perhaps -- but called the whole thing stem to stern into question. Hence a flurry of phone calls, etc. Most of which have been moderately polite at least with the exception of this new clutch of snotty-plus emails. It's been pointed out, as suggested above, that Franke doesn't even make this stuff, they're "consolidators" of parts... whatever. But the take-home message I got which I agree is hard to swallow from Franke, is that 'they just don't know where this equipment is being gotten from, don't know how "they can be selling it so cheaply" and perhaps that's why they're on the violators list .... though at the end of the day they told me they couldn't even tell me why a company was on the violator-list (as in they did not know, not that they would not). Which I should think is at least unfair and at most unlawful since aren't we all guaranteed by law to face our accuser? Or perhaps not for the "state of Texas" - aka an institution. That's probably only constitutionally protected for individuals ... unless it isn't. Am I ranting or what? Bad day here. I suspect at the end of the day there's a huge amount of grey-area behaviour going on in all kinds of directions. I suspect consumers, while getting their fair share of breaks, are not coming out ahead.... dunno about that either, don't know what would be proper, actually, But as I said in the beginning, it's really hard to know how to act morally in such an unregulated, opaque atmosphere.

That is definitely a box from Kohler. First of all Kohler should have boxed (protected) this better.

My distributor offers a rebox or double box surcharge on items. It costs $6 extra but is worth it for certain items.

You could try to get the distributor to send you a new one but you will probably just have to live with the scratch. Maybe try to buff it out some.

If it's brushed stainless, it'll buff out okay. Anyway, character is good! right...? :)

I've been an avid online shopper for ten years, and while sometimes things arrive damaged, a call to the vendor always results in a favorable outcome for me. Is you want to find out if your husband did it, look at the way the packing tape was sliced. Do the edges match the waviness of the scratch? It is best to firmly rule out user error before accusing the company of wrongdoing. Sometimes, though, stuff arrives damaged. I have sent things back if they are messed up, but the most important thing to do when you receive large items, like appliances or furniture, is schedule the delivery for a day when you can inspect everything in a leisurely, unhurried pace. Offer the deliver dudes some cookies or coffee so they don't get impatient, and look at every tiny thing. I learned that the HARD way with a desk, and by the time I noticed the damage, there was no recourse for me.

Allright, mad man advertguy2, can you hack in and change the title for me? That is the perfect title. The devil is in the details and trying to get them sorted in my mind and then express them in written form. : )
