Do you like your white decorative hood? How's cleaning?

Ive searched around quite a bit and cant find an answer to my exact question. Not sure if this is an appliance, kitchens or cleaning question . . .

I am doing white upper cabinets in my kitchen with white backsplash. I really want it light on top to feel more open. I really want the hood to be white and blend into my cabinets. I don't mind a stainless hood, but since I'm starting from scratch I'm leaning towards the other.

So my question is, are these hard to keep clean? Does anyone have experience they could share. I'm leaning towards a bluestar range so the hood will be wider than the range, but I'm not getting a crazy deep hood. I was thinking a liner that is 21"deep maybe the zephyr monsoon or something 18" deep. I don't do much wok cooking, but I cook a lot for my large family.

Yes, I like our white range hood! I have been cooking under it for about 8 months - just DH and me but I do some grilling and sautÃÂ©ing and broiling. I have not had a problem keeping it clean of cooking grime. To be sure, I just wiped a clean dishcloth along the molding - a little fluffy dust, but no grime :-). I do make sure that we always use the exhaust vent when using the range top or oven.

I'll try it with you celticmoon. And we'll see. I also noted that only one of the two cages was dirty (although I did wash them both). It was the white one. It was pretty disgusting, it had to go through the dishwasher twice. Must be because I don't use the supplementary "boost" or whatever button. So I may be able to at least get away with only dealing with one squirrel cage. I wonder too, if I do it often, I can keep it relatively clean without taking it down? We shall see. I also note that the paint came off the white one in the wash. Ah well.

If you are getting a grease buildup on the hood, the first thing to do is to assess the actual ventilation. Your ductwork may be blocked, or too small, or the fan may not have enough CFM's, or even just your filter needs cleaning. Good quality ventilation doesn't really allow much grease to escape the capture area. Never use any type of oil soap or anything with ammonia on your cabinets. It can weaken the finish, and if you ever need to re-paint, you'll need to prime with a specialty primer rather than just recoating with the existing paint. The best thing to use on cabinets is a wrung out microfiber cloth with a bit of Dawn mixed into the water that you wetted it with. That will grab any grease and dirt. But don't forget to rinse.

In my experience with my 1400 cfm Tradewind liner with baffles there would be no need to ever "clean" any parts except the baffles. My rationale for this is the following. Once a week ( more often if it warrants it ) I remove the baffles and clean them. depending on how much stir fry and deep fat frying we have done they are quite greasy, sometimes very very oily and one or two times , before I realized that they capture everything they were dripping droplets of golden oil. I also wipe down the surrounding area and there is never anything on this area at all. I have pushed the damper up and tried to wipe in that area and felt up there with my hand and there is nothing up there either. The process of using your hood correctly should remove any need for cleaning other than the baffles. The hood should be turned on at least 5 min. before you begin cooking and remain on at least that long at the end. This insures that all grease products are trapped on the baffles and then the remaining products, steam/heat/odors are removed to the outdoors. I hope this helps you with your decision. The baffles or your mesh should be very dirty on a regular basis, depending on your cooking style. Also there should not be any grease on any part of your surrounding area in the kitchen. If there is then the vent is not working correctly or you can adjust your use of it. Good Luck c

2. Protect Oven: The excessive debris building up on the bottom of appliance can be prevented by the oven liners and washed and reused time and again. This is begging for trouble when those liners melt. I don't know of a single oven manufacturer that doesn't say, "Don't use liners!". You can see some of the threads here for more on the problems they create. Also, for #4, randomly pouring drano et al is foolish, wasteful, and not good for the environment. Keeping a plunger available for if you have a problem and using common sense like not pouring hot fat down the sink are both better ways to avoid clogged drains. But working methodically to avoid going back over where you were is a good recommendation.

Yes, I was concerned about grime too. Like you, I wanted a hood that "rested lightly" in my kitchen, so I wanted it to match the cabinets. So I took a chance that it would stay good looking even after being lived in, and so far I'm very happy.

I'm not the most enthusiastic housekeeper, so I try to clean as I go, and I think that using the ventilation blower really helps.

I have a Vent-a-hood BH228SLD liner in a custom cabinetry hood. The liner is 28.375" wide by 19.25" deep, and the decorative hood adds about one inch all around. The hood is flanked by 12" deep upper cabinets. The blower is vented with an 8" round duct straight up and out the roof. I'm happy with the Vent-a-hood, but I should disclose that I didn't do much research on brand since the Vent-a-hood was what was offered by the cabinet company. My advice is whatever hood you chose, make sure to use it.

The blower motor draws air at up to 600 cfm. I know there are those who post here and in the Appliances Forum who can give better advice that I can about this sort of thing. I relied on an article about choosing a range hood to select the cfm rating based on the potential btu output of my range.

The decorative hood and cabs were made by Crestwood, Inc. in Salina, KS. They're an off-white color called Antique by Crestwood. I found it closely matches BM Cream Silk.

We have a freestanding GE gas range, 5 burner, standard 30" width, 27" depth.

I have a wood hood with a Best insert, it's great! The grates come out and you can just throw them in the dishwasher. I've been cooking in the house for 5 months now and haven't had to clean yet.
