LG vs Samsung

We are looking at two of the more basic FL models - one from LG and the other from Samsung, priced at about the same.

It's a choice between the The LG WM2140CW and the Samsung WF231ANW. I'm leaning heavily towards the Samsung for the following reasons:

- Faster spin cycle (1300 RPM vs 1100 for the LG)

- Sanitize Cycle (if this is what others are calling an "internal heater", this may seal the deal on Samsung since the LG doesn't have it)

- CEE Tier III Qualified (apparently the LG is not)

They are both sale-priced exactly the same (the LG at HomeDepot and the Samsung at Lowes), with free delivery and haul-away. So it just comes down to the smartest choice.

Any thoughts?

The Samsung has an onboard/internal heater and that LG does not.

I would not consider a FL washer that does not have an onboard heater.

Samsung has won the JD Powers overall top washer 4 years in a row.They did not get enough responses from Miele owners for Miele to qualify though.

Agree with deeageaux, definitely get the one with the internal heater.

Jeri - We just purchased the 950TT this morning from HD. It's last year's model and is now down to $1849 @ HD and $1844 @ Lowes. The 960 is this years model. It's the one with the Tilt Freezer Door. There are some other sutble differences as well and some not so sutble. Other ways to visually tell the two apart is by the display. The 950 has individual buttons while the 960 allows selections with contacts hidden under a membrane,... or is it membrain. Can't remember!! The 950 is accented with light gray plastic and the 960 sports black plastic. The 950 is Titanium while the 960 is Stainless,... TT vs ST. And the 960's internal shelfing and compartments looks a lot more modern. I was lucky (as far as price is concerned),... I got mine (new in box from warehouse) from HD for $1475.99 after a Lowes price match + 10% and some other discounting. $1604.80 after taxes and delivery charges. Not bad! Does anyone know of any performance or quality difference between the two? Stuff deeper than the eye can see?

Our 12 year old KitchenAid washer is again on the blink, so we are in the market for a replacement. The first place we checked was the February 2008 issue of Consumer Reports, which rates 20 front-loaders, 22 top-loaders, and 39 dryers. The LG's rated especially well. We also checked with our appliance repairman, a local independent who services almost all brands and who has done a great job for us for 12 years. He recommended that we "steer clear of LG." He said it is very difficult to get their parts since they are relatively new to the washer business and have not yet established a good service network in the US (they are Korean made machines). He also said that many of the customer service complaints you read about on the web are valid. He will not sign-up to be an authorized LG serviceman until they overcome their startup (for washers) difficulties. Here are a few other points he made: -- He bought a Whirlpool front-loader at Costco a couple of years ago and has been very satisfied with it. -- Although each maker comes out with new models with new technologies all the time, he generally prefers the Whirlpool line. -- Some of the top rated top-loaders do not have the typical center agitators. He said that those machines have a relatively new technology, but he has not encountered any reliability difficulties with them so far. He did say that, although they clean very well for most kinds of loads, they don't do quite as well as the agitator-type machines on extremely soiled loads; i.e., your kids love to play in the dirt and mud! I would like to get your hands on experiences with these 3 brands for fridge, range & dishwasher. I am remodeling my new condo in Miami and replacing everything. My old condo in Brooklyn I had GE appliances and GE fridge had a problem with leaked freon gas after 5+ years that costed me $150 to repair (after warranty expired). So far my research shows that LG has the longest warranty, followed by Samsung & GE. Luckily for me my condo includes appliance insurance from a third party vendor. If anything is not working I just schedule an appointment and repair man shows up the next day. In my other Miami condo (rental) before I did renovations I had appliances from the 80's and they would service them free of charge. They would only charge me if they needed to order some parts (ie. knob broke on washer). Price wise LG fridges are the most expensive (30%) while GE & Samsung are similar. For ranges it is LG, GE, Samsung (expensive to cheapest). For dishwashers its LG, GE, Samsung.

I wouldn't waste money on dual-fuel. From what I can tell, the overall quality of the range makes a much bigger difference. I have used both gas and electric ovens, and they both work just fine after you have adjusted to their own specific peculiarities. And honestly, that's true for all ovens. No two models are exactly alike. I'd stay clear of the brands that you quoted. While they certainly sell a large volume of units, the horror stories here on Houzz across all their product lines are somewhat off-putting. If you have been reading this forum for a while, you'll see that I am personally a huge fan of Bluestar ranges. You could maybe find a RCS series range, but it'll likely be just outside of your preferred price range. Make sure you buy a model with the open star shaped burners though. That's what sets Bluestar apart from the rest of the manufacturers. Alternatively, consider induction. It has lots of good things going for it. It might be a better fit for your needs. And there certainly are models that fit your desired price range.

Please do not purchase an LG. We bought an LG top loading HE washer almost a year ago. This week it broke - and trying to get anyone to come out to service it has been a nightmare. Where I live, LG has ONE repair contractor for a two-county area with a population of over 1 million.

For four days now our washer has been locked - with water and clothing inside of it. And we have to wait three more days for someone to come look at it. Not acceptable. LG customer service and wait time for repairs gets a letter grade of "F" from this consumer.

Berryfarm - It sounds like you are echoing issues I seem to remember gleaning from other posts about LG's customer service issues. Things break. When that happens, it presents an opportunity for the manufacturer to truly make their product shine. I heard an adage in the car industry that "A customer is MADE in the showroom, and KEPT in the service department" - so true in any industry. I am amazed how little that advice is heeded today.

What others say about the wisdom of buying a heater-equipped FL is a strong factor swaying me to the Samsung. But YOUR point resonates particularly strongly. We've owned Whirlpool products for 20 years and were so loyal we encourage others to buy them. We were all set to buy another when we encountered customer service issues - similar to yours with LG - after inquiring about our options with the company (I have a separate post on that here). We will never again buy a Whirlpool product.

How can companies afford to squander a resource as valuable as a loyal customer?

Simple: they don't care anymore. Profit/loss, shareholders, and dividends are all that matter in today's world.

We have had a Samsung for over 2 years and although we have issues with it we have learned how to get around them. It cleans well enough now and doesn't shake. I told the wife the other day, "if this thing lasts over 10 years I'll take back all the bad things I said". I don't know, since front loaders are notorious for problems with either the bearings or the control electronics. But if it does, WHOPPIE.

My new AEG top modell washing machine machine do the same!!! Pilling all my clothes from the very first washing! AEG L 98 699 Fl2. It is Italian. I have bought it in June 2014. All my clothes shabby and pilling!
