Ever hear of ACDirect? What do you know?

Has anyone bought AC equipment from this company. They sell AC systems over the internet (Goodman and Ruud). Can you give me any information about this company (ACDirect). I understand that Goodman is an economy line. What about Ruud? Are there other internet sellers that deal with do it yourselfers?

Others, I am sure, will comment on Ruud, but I can tell you that any Goodman unit purchased over the internet has its warranty void. You can read it yourself on the Goodman/amana website.

Also, from what I have read, much of the "quality" of a unit comes from the skill of the installation and, having seen three monkeys and a heat pump's crappy job at a friend's house, I personally would steer away from trying to find someone to just install it.

Good reply, Dave.

The install makes or breaks the system.

You can buy the unit yourself, but most pros will not install it for you because they make no $$ on the sale, and won't warrant the installation.

It can be done, but you have to know what you're doing (and still won't get a parts warranty from the mfr for an internet buy).

Read the fine print.

Buyer beware.

Sure chicken stock can support growth of botulism. Any low acid food can, and meat and meat broths are low acid. I think everyone goes through that 'scared' to eat it phase. Especially so if they haven't watched an experienced canner a few times do a certain product. The first time I made saurkraut, and the fermentation started I freaked out. Nothing smelling that bad could surely be edible. I talked it over with a couple of experienced kraut makers, and even had one go down and inspect my 'work in progress' and guess what, when it was done.......it was so good. Try to keep things in perspective. If you use a method you know is current and safe, and you followed directions, and the product sealed well you are probably just fine. If you have any doubts whatsoever when it comes time to eat it, follow common sense. If it smells off, doesn't look right, is growing something, or the lid pops off like an explosion when you open it, for pity's sake don't even smell it. Dispose of it safely. If it looks fine and you still have doubts, heat it to the boiling point for twenty minutes. That will kill the bacteria and break down the toxins. I have read the stats on botulism poisoning each year at the CDC websites. If you disregard the cases of infant botulism and wound botulism there are relatively few cases of it from food consumption considering the amount of food preserved annually in this country. That's not going to help you if you are one of the cases, though, is it? In my case the only time I was concerned was when I canned up a huge surplus of potatoes in a good gardening year. Even commercially canned spuds will sometimes get cloudy liquid from the potatoes disintegrating in the heating process.......but it turned me off. I think I pitched them, and am really sure in retrospect they were probably wonderful and safe. I followed the directions to the T.

My favorite restaurant supply store find is my measuring scoops. I gave a set to Diana in the my favorite things swap - you can see a picture on that thread. Restaurant supply stores are good for getting substantial stainless steel measuring cups and spoons instead of the wimpy aluminum ones that bend or dent. Or the big thin spatulas that can be used for tasks like lifting a layer of cake after you have split it horizontally to add fillings. In addition to what others have mentioned, they often have the cake pans with straight sides instead of sloped which is nice when making layer cakes. Around here there are two kinds - the ones that sell mainly food with a bit of equipment and the ones that sell mainly equipment - everything from utensils to major appliances. Smart and Final and Cash and Carry are the food kind - they are under the same ownership but Cash and Carry is bigger with more specialized food. For example, our Smart and Final has a few kinds of Torani syrup but the Cash and Carry has the full line plus some other lines of flavoring syrups. The equipment ones aren't all equal either. The area that has Cash and Carry has about 3 of the non-food restaurant supply stores. One carries nicer more varied stuff than the other two. But all have at least the basics like the stainless steel sheet pans, good cooling racks and lots of utensils. All the ones around here are open to the public. Thank you. The female cat was TNR. Mama kitty was a neighbor's in the court, she had her as a feral kitten. She kept two of her kittens from 2 yrs ago. I spoke to the neighbor and she said she couldn't catch her with a trap, that she tried. Over the summer I think the mama cat got bite by something because she was laying in the abandomed property for days. She would just sleep, but not move. That's when I found these guys. I gave the mama cat, milk, half and half, and water. After 2 days she finally got up and walk around. I couldn't get threw to the property at the time. It's a forclosure property. I finally convience the mama to come threw the hole of the fence to eat. I sat there all summer with her, no touching...LOL! I was on unemploymnet so I could do that. Then she finally came closer to my backdoor, still no touching. I found a women who traps for TNR, and we got a trap. Took another 3 weeks but we finally caught her. That's when I found the babies. That's why she wouldn't leave that property. I called That Neighbor told her we did a TNR on the mama kitty. And since she was released I haven't seen her since. BUT, that neigbor finally put food out and mama kitty did show up there (her orginally home) So that was good......I wasnt sleeping too good thinkingshe was in the woods dying or something. Cause TNR is rough, Trap, Neuter and then Release, with no one watching how your doing......ERRRR. The trapper did keep her for 3 days after the operation, so that was good.

YES! YES! I haven't seen any infomercials on it (?), but it is a high-quality, German-made tool that's incredibly handy for a zillion jobs around the house. I've used it to sand corners and edges of floors, sand complicated molding profiles, cut off pipes, rout out grout from between tile, saw through cement backerboard ... it has a lot of (pricey but great) add-ons for just about every job you can think of. I believe Rockler Woodworking carries them: if there's one in your area, ask for a tryout to see if it's what you want.

Certainly good and valid comments about buying hvac equipment at a discount and and then finding someone to install it properly. I expect that most shops will turn a DIY'er down flat and might even be rude about it because they feel they're somehow being cheated out of their due profit.

But there surely must be shops around, well qualified, willing to take $1000 for a day's work for two guys to make sure a job is done right. Too bad there's no way to start a list of them.

By the way the Goodman "Warranty not valid for Internet sales" is just window dressing to keep their dealers happy. As one mail-order retailer said, "just call up and order it over the phone." The words on their web site are very specifically about Internet sales. Or buy something other than Goodman - lots of brands are available "wholesale to the public."

But in any case the real problem is support. The wholesaler may be an honest Goodman (etc) dealer, you buy over the phone, find a great installer who does a perfect job, then six months later the fickle finger breaks your compressor. The "free" replacement part will incur two-way shipping costs and take a few days to arrive. Then you'll need to pay someone to change it out. But do I understand correctly that you'll pay for labor in any case, unless you pony up for a contract with your installer?
