Closing deal tonite & PANICKING-is this a good Carrier system?

You would think that after reading and reading almost every post in this forum that I would be ready to sign on the dotted line but now that it's really happening, I'm starting to doubt myself. This is a huge expense for us and I want to make sure we're doing it right.

I'm okay on the price...I just want to know if it's a good set up and if there's anything else that I should have him spell out on the contract.

We have a 1275 sq. ft home. Mild winters, very hot summers (100-112 degrees average).

They said that they will do a manual J and D.

Carrier Infinity Series Variable Speed Furnace

Model #58CVX-090116. 110,000 BTU. 80.2% AFUE Two Stage Gas Valve. ECM Blower Motor.

Carrier 3.5 Ton Performance Series Cased N-Coil. Puron Model CNPHP42.

Carrier 3.5 Ton Performance Series Condensing Unit Model 24APA542. R-410A Puron System. BEL Rating as low as 6.6. Rated SEER up to 17.0.

They are taking out our swamp cooler off the roof and closing up the space. We've chosen to have the A/C outside on the ground.

Installing all new duct work after an abestos team comes out to remove old ducting/asbestos.

Relocate furnace to attic space complete with new attic access, work station and service light as per code

Suspend new furnace from roof rafters to ensure quiet system operation.

Install new R-6 duct system.

Seal system as per title 24 requirements.

Install manual dampers at all accessible branches.

Install 7/8" refrigerant lines and install filter dryer to protect new equipment.

Install new primary and secondary condensation drain lines with safety pan.

Equipment check out and system start up. All tax, labor, materials and city permits included.

$ 12,768.00

Carrier Cool Cash rebate $ 350.00

Electric company rebates $ 100.00

System after all rebates $ 12,318.00

1. At that price, the deal should be contingent (in writing) that they prepare a formal Manual J/D.

2. Is the ductwork metal, flex duct, or both? I prefer metal trunklines insulated with flex duct connectors for ease of installation and cost.

3. Where are you located? Sounds like a lot of heating and cooling for 1275 sqft. Sounds like Arizona. I'm confused with the model number of the furnace; the 090-16 denotes a 90k unit, which would sound much more correct in my opinion. The 110k btu model is 58CVX110-20.

4. Ask to receive the CNPHP4221ATA tin-plated copper coil. The ATA denotes this. This coil has become rather standard but it's good to make sure.

Good system if installed properly. 12.5 EER (12.9 with 110k furnace) and 15 SEER. Not 17 SEER, so that's misleading. I assume it carries a 10-year equipment manufacturer warranty?

where do you live?

at first glance, I would say you may be oversized both heating and cooling especially heating.

nothing special about those prices.

You fail to give the complete number for the evap coil but I believe this is the matching AHRI Directory performance/eff numbers.

It does not qualify for the tax credit and that in itself is a big mistake.

I would not sign anything or provide a deposit until I saw the load calcs in writing. Did you solicit other quotes?

I am trying to answer as best I can. I am not trying to be difficult, I was just not expecting having to face this major expense right after closing. The real estate market in Dallas is crazy & we were on a time limit to buy a home. Most homes have multiple offers as did ours & we had a short option period. I realize no one forced us to buy this home but I am just frustrated that 3 top rated companies are coming up with different recommendations. The system currently in place is working but if we are not going to be comfortable & it is undersized I'd rather bite the bullet now & replace before we do other work & paint before moving in. I would think that an inspector who told us he has inspected 17,000 homes in DFW would have given us a heads up that a 2 or 2 &1/2 ton mismatched system would be undersized for a close to 2,300 SF home, The ducts are located in the soffits below the attic (as was apparently done in the 60's in these homes) running in a t-shape down 2-hallways perpendicular to each other, The quotes I have received are to install all new ductwork in the attic so we can at some point knock out the existing ductwork & soffits & raise the ceiling height in the 2 hallways to that of the rest of the home. The all new duct work is approx $2,500-$3,500 of the quotes I have mentioned (although we would still have some cost even if we retrofit) . This would be done if we installed a 3, 4 or 5 ton replacement system including furnace, coil etc. I just have a hard time understanding how a 3 ton system would cool a 2,300SF home. I have attached a copy of the floor plan that the Carrier dealer created. He would not give me the load calc. We also requested an additional supply in the MBR and they will be installing a 2nd (additional) return. Thank you.

Reading this thread has reaffirmed my decision to upsize the Greenspeed per Carrier's recommendation based on my cooling load. I could have went either way: 3 or 4-ton with my heat load. Too bad they don't make a 3.5 ton, it would have been the perfect size. Last year's polar vortex in NY Long Island really pushed me into the 4-ton. The way I figure the unit will only go into defrost mode below 8-10F. I also have 300sqft of window space, three huge doors and a fireplace. No matter how much my thermal envelope is tightened there will still be leakage in this 75 year-old home. My biggest disappointment so far with the 4-ton is it only reduces its speed to 50% vs 40% for the 3 and 5-ton units. The information across the Internet is just plain wrong on that one. We're charting in brand new territory still, so hope I've added somewhat to the pool of information. Otherwise this unit is *way* better than my wildest expectations. The comfortability factor is way better than my single-stage and well worth the additional cost. I'd go even as far as to say perfect. We had a huge heat snap for two days 65% humidity and temps into the upper eighties still at 80F past midnight. I only used $3.15 for the entire day vs. almost $11 for a similar temp period last year. I also credit my new Sunrise windows with lots of the improvement. At full load the system was using approximately 1150W. It only went up to 70% usage for a very brief period at night. More importantly I could easily maintain rock solid 45% humidity at 73F. Not enough data to really extrapolate much else. The system is so quiet my neighbors asked why I hadnÃ¢ÂÂt turned it on yet. :) The real test will be this winter though. Good move in not chosing G Man. I had prices from $5400 for Trane , Carrier 6100, Amana 7600 and Ruud 5700, 3.5 ton hp, 1832 sq ft ranch in FL. My Trane xr14, is 15 seer rated qualifies for 1500 tax credit and Fl power and light gave me a 475 rebate. I had some duct work included , 2 annual maint. no charge and 2% discount for paying by check. I was told on the uv is hard to tell when they burn out so they just replace it, with annual inspection. You can't buy it at Lowe's, you have to buy from them. I think it is a sales gimmick and can't justify the cost or see the value, that's me. See what others think at the other site Hvac-talk.

Answer to Brad: I m located in Quebec, the weather is quite cold here, also the electricity cost is very low compare to the rest of north america, so comparing to me might not be very useful. I would suggest that you compare your electricity consumption with you neighbors ( ask your neighbor) or colleagues at work, that would give a better idea how your heat pump performing, try also to find out if your your utility company has a tool in there web site where you can compare your consumption with your peers. Hydro Quebec (our only utility company) has tool that gave me how efficient my home versus similar sizes home.

I am going to make sure that this is in writing. I'm assuming that they do the Manual J/D after I sign because of the cost involved...or are you supposed to get it done before you sign?

Good point. I'm going to make sure that this is spelled out on the contract.

I will double check on the model number with him. I live in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles. The winters aren't too bad, although it does get down to freezing sometimes. The summers are like Arizona, very, very hot, averaging in the low 100's to 112.

I did get many other quotes. This quote falls right into the average but this company has a steller reputation for good work and from what I've read on this forum, that's very important. My quotes were as low as $8,000 and as high as $20,000.

Regarding the tax credits, what Carrier units qualify that would be good for me?

It's supposed to hit the 100's by next week and we are totally without air conditioning.
