Need straight talk from more experienced remodelers

Hello! I've been so absorbed reading these forums all weekend, that I feel like I can trust you and I look forward to blunt, honest opinion, so fire away. One trip to Home Depot and one chat with a (cranky!) kitchen "specialist," and I find out our cabinets, circa 1940s, will require a custom built new countertop...due to the shallowness of their depth (22 inches). So. We wanted to freshen up the older kitchen w/ metal cabinets, but it seems that the $$$ we'd spend for a new countertop and professional painting of the old cabinetry might be better spent tearing out the old and installing new.

What we're hoping is that someone can tell us what we're in for as far as (rough, of course) costs. To have a kitchen designer come to our home will cost hundreds of dollars to begin with! We'll do as much demo as we are able. But what do new cabinets cost? Depends on quality, I imagine, but are we talking 10K to gut to the (plaster!) walls and start over? Or is it more like 20K? Any advice/comment is welcome. I need answers, and I don't know how to go about finding them. Do I talk to a contractor? Get bids? Thanks.
