Has anyone designed and built their own kitchen mantle?

Hi from St John,

The kitchen is a galley style 11'wide by 16' long.

The kitchen cabinets are Kraftmaid Newport glazed bisque in color. The cabinets are installed and we put two thirty inch upper cabinets above both sides of the counters to provide as much storage as possible. We do monthly shopping trips to another island so need to store larger quantities than we would in the States. Above the stove we left open to the back wall to custom build a mantle and mantle wall. I didn't care for the ones Kraftmaid had and I have a set of handpainted antique plates I want to hang above the mantle so I don't want it to slope. Would like ideas for something unique. Venting is not possible so just the look and the lighting is a consideration.I have looked at all the kitchen and backspash blog photos many times and some websites but nothing so far that has really struck me. All suggestions appreciated.
