Cabinet Hardware - Polished Nickel v. Polished Chrome

I have read previous posts/threads on polished nickel versus polished chrome and was confident in my decision to purchase polished chrome faucets in my kitchen and bath. However, I am having lots of trouble making a choice for my kitchen cabinet hardware. I prefer the look of polished nickel (for its warmer color) but I generally lean toward the lower maintenance/worry free options when I make a choice for a high-use area of the house. The previous posts about polished nickel spotting with age concern me, but it wasn't clear to me how much of a problem this tends to be with cabinet pulls and knobs. If it makes any difference, I am leaning toward Restoration Hardware knobs and pulls, so specific experience with RH polished nickel and RH polished chrome would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi,
I agree that nickel is lovelier than chrome, and for that beauty there is the price to pay in durability and polishing. I went with nickel and continue to have a need to polish the knobs and hinges and pulls from time to time. The most frequently handled knobs stay bright, while the seldom-touched ones darken and cloud over.

Hi Casey - Thanks for responding. We have a lot of kitchen cabinets including many we won't use frequently, so I have a feeling that polished chrome is going to be the best fit for us. Too bad, as nickel is so pretty!

Polished chrome is shiny silver with blue undertones, while polished nickel is a softer silver with yellow undertones, almost like sterling silver. We are in the middle of a bath remodel and they just installed all my new NICKEL hardware yesterday. I thought it would be fine with all the chrome fixtures but the difference is very obvious. Just ordered all new CHROME hardware 15 minutes ago. This is my laundry room, too, so there's a lot of hardware. )-8 A few people have reported unsightly tarnish and wear with the nickel. Our kitchen faucet is nickel and it still looks perfect after two years, so not all nickel finishes are the same.

My master bathroom has white cabinets , Carrara marble floors and counters all fixtures are polished nickel …i think they are a little ore upkeep than the chrome, but love the color. I need to change out my shower head…any opinions on using a chrome or satin nickel shower head even though the shower trim is polished nickel? I never wipe off my showerhead except when i clean the bathroom…lol

I have lived in the same house for 39 years and have done three remodels. There is no doubt in my mind that chrome is the way to go. I have one set of fixtures which have been here for 25 years and they are beautiful. As for Rohl, plumbing supply people say there is no better and I put in one set in my main bathroom (I have six) and love it but don't use glass cleaner on it. Supply stores have a specific product and you don't even need that if you just quickly wipe up after using, one swipe with a microfiber cloth I keep under the sink. I am not a fanatic, it takes ten seconds and it doesn't matter if you miss a couple of times but you will never be sorry. However, now companies like California Faucets and Newport Brass make the Rohl classic styles in polished chrome and the price is about 40% less and you have both beauty and excellent function. In the long run, after I have obsessed over the exact choices every time, I like everything I have now because they are good, fairly expensive but not Rohl top of the like (or Watermark) and polished chrome and they last.
