Wow--that's fascinating. I didn't realize you could get such a good view of them; every time I checked out the live cam I could barely interpret what I was looking at, and nothing much was happening. Were you able to see her give birth?

The babies are so tiny! It's hard to imagine them growing up to be bears. Maybe she mated with an especially brave mink. LOL

And what a noisy time they're having.........so much for my old believe that bears did nothing but sleep during hibernation.

alisande, the squalls coming out of those tiny mouths are unbelievable!!! No wonder Mama and Hope hop to it to tend to their needs!

There is a video of the birth, although I really couldn't figure out what I was watching - you can find it on the bear home page.

One of the big worries was how big sister Hope would deal with the new cubs, but she seems to be doing fine. I still can't figure out how Mama and Big Sis keep from crushing those babies - but they do.

I have been watching them constantly! Well, at least I have the web cam up constantly, while I'm working, and peek in every time I hear a sound. I've taken some great screen shots to show Gary, since he's not at the computer often. I've always been fascinated by bears, but am learning so much more from reading all of the articles on the site.

Not quite accurate (I now know), but had to share this anyhow:

GONNA BE A BEAR

In this life I'm a woman. In my next life, I'd like to come back as a bear. When you're a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.

When you're a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you are sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute, cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you're a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you're a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

Yup, gonna be a bear!

Aren't they the cutest?! I had lily on at lunch Wed and was thrilled to see them the second time she had them out, looked like they were crawling up her tummy. She tucked them down again and folded herself around for a nap. Hope looks like she is in the way at times but I'm sure she is good for keeping the den warmer for her siblings.

That was really fascinating to watch and to learn more about them. Thanks so much for sharing the link. I have checked in from time to time but never really saw anything. I really enjoyed watching this today :)

I wonder when mama will wean Hope. At some point when the cubs are bigger and eat more, she will take a lot of energy and nutrition from mom's resources and the new cubs.

Sheilajoyce, the Bearwatchers say that Lily is limiting Hope's nursing and making sure the babies have priority,so I'm sure the babies will get all the milk they need.

Forgot to mention that Hope has been eating 'real' food for months. So her nursing is more for comfort than nourishment.
