Anyone with 30' height upper cabinets?

DD has a choice of 30" or 36" upper cabinets in her kitchen with 8' ceilings. If she does 30" she'll add crown molding and leave the space above open. If she does 36" she'll have some sort of combination of trim/board/crown that will close up the gap. Right now her kitchen has 30" cabinets and a soffit which holds recessed can lights. She doesn't know yet whether it is possible to get recessed cans in the actual ceiling after the soffit is taken out. If she can't get the recessed lights into the kitchen ceiling she is stumped as to how to get ceiling surface mounted lights that will shine down on the counters since the cabinet door swing of 36" high cabinets would probably hit the lights. All of her friends say 30" cabinets are too short but if she has about 12" from top of cabinets to the ceiling she thinks she can find some attractive surface mount lights that wouldn't interfere with the door swing. Also she thinks she couldn't really reach anything on the top shelf of 36" cabinets anyway. But, she's thinking of resale in 2 to 3 years and doesn't want to do anything cheesy. Just another question in the continuing saga of her remodel and we would love your advice. Thanks.
