My husband and I are using Schrock's of Walnut Creek. They are a custom cabinetry company located a couple hours west of Pittsburgh in Walnut Creek, Ohio. I'm not sure if they are Amish or Mennonite owned, but I know there are a combination of both who work there. They have been absolutely wonderful to deal with. We went out several months ago and toured their facility and got to see the cabinets being made. The quality is just fantastic. My contact there is Lyle Miller. He truly has been wonderful. We have just placed our order, so we won't have our cabinets until the beginning of November. I'll be posting lots of pictures when our kitchen is finished!

Thanks munkel. I will add them too. My builder has some people he'd like me to talk to as well. He is great, he was fine when I told him we wouldn't use the person he had originally sent us to and is willing to either work w/ whomever we find our help us to find someone he has worked w/ before. We also got another quote back, from paradise custom kitchens. they came in a little higher than wellsford- $38,000 + $4000-$5000 installation + tax, but that wasn't too bad either. So, we are meeting w/ wellsford on tuesday and going to oxford cabinets on tuesday, and we're also waiting for quotes back from a few other people that I sent pictures to via email.

Had cabinetry made by a carpenter near Montrose, PA. Gorgeous work. Cherry w/ inset doors / drawers. Over the moon pleased with his work. How can I get in touch w/ you re: details?

The kitchen shop I dealt with had designers, too. It also had two different companies, each with cabinets at two different price levels. I had innumerable meetings with the owner/designer. He came out to my house and took measurements. Then I paid him $1000 for a design and a detailed bid (I had a good ballpark figure already). For that money, I now owned the design and could take it anywhere, with all the specs as well. If I chose to go with this company, the $1000 would be credited toward my purchase. That is what actually happened. I had considered using a local cabinet maker and might have saved some money, but I didn't for various reasons. First, he was a flake - constantly losing his cell phone, not showing up for appointments. Second, he was strictly a cabinet maker - I would have had to hire someone else for demo of the existing kitchen and installation of the new cabinets. I was already hiring someone to remove the soffits (I wanted it done before the demo - needed to find out what was up there and wanted the final demo/installation to be done in as short a period of time as possible). I had also hired someone to install a new ceiling and paint it, and a painter to paint all the woodwork and walls. I had all this done ahead of time. I had put new lighting in 12 years before, and the same handyman came back and removed the under cabinet lighting and later reinstalled it. He also added one more pot light in the ceiling and dealt with the electrical stuff that was revealed when the soffit was removed. So, I needed a company that would do the rest. I used Shiloh cabinets and 18 months later, could not be happier. They are Shaker, painted in Repose Gray. They're wonderful and I'm thrilled with my kitchen! If budget is a big concern (is usually is!), then nix the wood hood and go with a simple stainless one from Vent-a-Hood. It will be far easier to keep clean and cost about half what the wood one does.
