I need to decide soon:Trane vs Carrier?

I'm replacing a 10 year old Carrier AC 2.5 ton/furnace in my attic for 2nd floor and single 3rd floor room. Which system and deal should I go with?

Trane HP XL15i 3 ton + furnace TUD1B080A9H3 80000 BTU, 10 years warranty on all parts and labor (thru dealer provided I use them to do yearly maintenace at $89)),VisionPRO 8000 thermostat,

1 year free preventive maintenace by dealer

They will increase size of main return duct to 16 and add 2 more supply vents to 3rd floor Cost: $7000

Carrier HP performance series 3 ton/15 SEER + furnace Infinity 58CVA090 with all other details above for same price

Carrier HP performance series (25HPA5) 3 ton/15 SEER + furnace 58PH Boost 80 / 70000 BTU, Warranty 10 yeras parts/1 year labor, digital programable thermostat Cost: $6000

(I haven't discussed duct change/addition, or extended warranty with them)

All systems qualify for tax credit

what is the size of the living area you are cooling and heating?

when you have existing 2 1/2 ton AC, why are you going up in size to three ton?

I always say contractor first,
The first two systems are pretty close to each other and are very good systems.
Your 1st contractor you already use so you know them.
If they are good enough for all those past maintenance's then I think they should be in front to give you confidence that they can do a good job with your new install.

I live north of Baltimore; Bel Air to be exact. I am replacing my 21 year old 7 SEER heat pump this month. It still works, but going from a 7 SEER to a 14 SEER will save me 45% in electricity costs. With BGE raising rates by 65%, my net electric bill will increase by only 20%. I am installing a humidifier since I find the house to be very dry in the winter with the heat pump running and the fireplace cranking. This will be the only "bell and whisltle" for me. If you don't already have a digital programmable thermostat, you'll like the features once you learn how to use them. You picked a good time for a new system install: nice weather, no summertime heat crisis, and the HVAC companies are not that swamped yet. Best of luck to you, Sue.

netski Post the model and size of both the Carrier HP and the York HP. My initial response is to replace the York with the Carrier Infinity. That would be my decision if I was faced with your circumstances as described. I would not even accept a nice discount. Call the dealer ASAP. Don't pay until this mess is resolved to your satisfaction. TD

how much does your electricity cost? Do you have central air? Are you considering replacing your central air? Air source heatpumps are almost always cheaper to heat with than expensive oil. I would keep the oil for the extra cold weather when a heatpump can't keep up or isn't as comfy.

I have the Carrier 58MVC60 (60,000 BTU) furnaces and Infinity 17 condensers. These are 3 stage furnances. I strongly recommend getting the Infinity controller. I believe you must purchase it in order to qualify for the $1000 rebate. I also suggest the 10 year labor warranty come from Carrier and not the contractor. The system you have described is very good, but I would be concerned if it has been sized properly. How many square feet is your house? I also think your are geeting bad advice from the Goodman dealer. If you can afford it you should install furance, coil, and condenser at the same time. If you like the Carrier equipment, then go to their web site and look up more dealers in your area. Look for ones that have the Factory Authorized symbol. Their work is guranteed by Carrier in the event anything goes wrong with the installation.

Classicdave, looks like the furnace in the Trane estimate just has an X13 motor, not variable speed (note the *H3 rather than *V3). So, I think there's a bit of an advantage there to the Carrier furnace, provided it includes the Infinity controller.
