I got a great gift last night

DH broke his ankle on December 31, and he has been on crutches and a "boot" since then. He has needed a lot of extra help at home.

Last night I was sitting at the computer, bored, wasting time looking at this and that. DH hobbled into the room,

came up behind me and said, "Thank you for helping me." I mumbled, "You're welcome." And then he sat a box

in front of me. Can you guess what was in the box?

Hi Chris, Yes, those cold winds are no fun. We're on a hilltop, mile high elevation, so do get buffeted by them quite often this time of year. We had them this weekend and now again today, although today doesn't seem that cold. Maybe I'm getting used to it after 18 years. : ) I don't winter protect my roses but sometimes I don't get out to rake the last batch of fall leaves so they often accumulate under the roses, probably giving a bit of protection. I mainly concentrate on growing roses that I know will do well in my temps - winter night temps in the 20s-30s and quite often in the teens, days in the 40-60 range with some 20s-30s thrown in to keep my favorite swear words up to date. ; ) Summers are mild with mostly 80s, some 90s but never triple digits. Snow is common in the winter months but doesn't last long. The roses don't seem to mind it. My native soil is decomposed granite so it drains well. Are you on the southern slopes of the SBs, Arrowhead area? If so you get more snow usually but are often warmer in the summer. If you haven't been there, try Newell's in Yucaipa for roses and other plants, as well. It's a very nice nursery. Another place I like that has good prices is Sunshine Growers in Ontario. They both have websites and Newell's has a newsletter you can subscribe to. Diana A winter pic. This isn't that often but this year was the exception, especially Feb. Way more snow and cold than usual. I have Day Breaker, Lady Elsie May, Easy Going, Livin' Easy, Otta the Blue, Lillian Austin, Fair Bianca, Rhapsody in Blue, Top Notch, Honey Perfume, Elle, Graham Thomas in the front beds and BP Iceberg outside the fence. All come through the cold and snow just fine. So do th hollyhocks - they're about 3 feet already. : )

The same thing happened to my Angel Trumpet several weeks ago. The frosted leaves have now dropped off and I am seeing new growth in all the damaged areas already! Unfortunately, I did lose some of the flowers.

I use my instant read meat thermometer to check soil temperatures, so it does double duty for the seedlings and for the kitchen. I also use my waterproof (body) heating pads, set on low, with a wire rack on top to raise the seedling tray off of them a half-inch or so, and they keep the air in the domed trays (also free, clear plastic rectangular salad greens containers) a constant 80F. So far the only cost of raising seedlings has been for my soil-less mix and the seeds, but right now I'm using a small single bulb shop light. In just a few days I'll be home, so I'll be purchasing some 4-foot double ones. I have discovered the perfect seedling chamber....an old picnic cooler! With the 2' light suspended from the handles by straps, foil taped to the inside of the lid to reflect light (along with the white interior of the chest) and the lid open just far enough to bring the power cord out, my tomatoes and peppers are really happy campers! Yes, Kindle!! I almost fainted I was so surprised. Got it going and downloaded a couple books last night. I am so happy!

Was he serious?! That is really funny! I guess your DH thought a waffle iron would be a really wonderful gift! No woman could want more! LOL! Something to help us cook another meal!! Oh well, guess what I got for Christmas, Chisue--a crockpot!!

socks -- No, he meant it to be funny. I've told the story often enough about buying the new Maytag washer and dryer from the man whose wife left him after he gave them to her for Christmas. DH is just a witty guy. He doesn't even *think* about t.hese things; they just come out of his mouth.

Crockpot, eh? Perhaps your plastic expression of joy over that made him think about the Kindle.

Reminds me of a friend in college who was hoping for a diamond ring. They had gone together for 4 years, and he was sweet, and now they were seniors. Classmates here and there were planning their summer weddings for after graduation. She was hoping----but he gave her an electric toothbrush! They broke up before long.

Believe me, Marilyn, you'd regret it!! But maybe not because 2 broken legs would warrant a really, really BIG gift. LOL!

Gee, I must be in store for a really nice gift soon. LOL Let's see since 2007 he's had a heartattack, a stroke, 4 stents, 2 bad knees (2 surgeries coming soon...yeah!) oh and bladder cancer.

Hope you enjoy your Kindle. I'm so glad he appreciates what you do for him.

socks12345 -- Forgot to ask for an update on Oski! What's HE done for you lately?

Eliot's taken advantage of the slight thaw we've had to roam the back yard, eat some *interesting* stuff, then puke in our BR at 3 a.m. -- repeatedly. He never learns because the sick doesn't happen right after he ingests the 'whatever'. (Rabbit poop is my guess.) This is the dog who has a special diet ($$$ from the vet) because of his excess stomach acid.

Saw the pup Thursday night. DS/DIL were at work and we went to their house to wait for them so we could go out to eat. Oski was in his playpen and so glad to see us. I took him out for a walk. He really doesn't like to walk away from the house, stops and looks, has to be tugged along. When we turn around he tries to run back.

Still is very mouthy and the house training is slow. He is one strong-willed, energetic pup, worn out at night. Yes, he eats things in the yard as well but I don't think he has thrown up yet.

I guess you really have to watch things in the yard since Elliot likes to eat things. Toadstools, etc. Sorry for the throw-up mess and hope he recovered quickly. The vet told us that dogs don't learn from eating bad stuff in the yard; they'll do it again

Oski had his operation. First trip to the groomer today (they'll probably put a surcharge because he won't hold still). He's growing; I notice it when I pick him up, bigger around the tummy. He's a lot of fun and thanks for asking. I guess I can hijack this thread since I started it!

At the park. He approached another big dog who snarled him away. He took off but continued running around unfazed. He's such a happy little dog. This is probably 10 times more information than you want, but it's all I have for a grandchild! LOL!
