Need help starting crochet project

I'm having a mental block getting this project started!

Here are the directions:

Chain 151

Dc in 4th chain from hook (3 skipped sts count as first dc)

and in each chain across. 149 dc.

Question: When I count to see if I hae 149 dc, would I count the 3 skipped stitches which count as first dc?

Seems so elementary, but I just cannot figure out what is right!

Yes the three beginning chain is counted as the first double crochet.

There's a reason why land away from city center or base is less expensive....not only do you have to invest time to get to and fro, but you have commuting costs including fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle. So what you are seeing as a cost trade-off, really isn't so much of one. I think it's laudable to want to save and invest now for the future, but as many people recently learned, real estate isn't always the "guaranteed" increased return that it once was....you may buy a hunk of land only to find the base is closed and the value drops like a rock or whatever. Or you may find yourself stuck with a piece of land that is nowhere near where you want to end up and be unable to sell it....esp if it's an hour away from base. There's so much housing available on the market right now that, if you really want to buy and start small, consider a foreclosure...a lot of them go for a song because they are in such rough shape and you can build and remodel as you have more money...and a lot of the work is already done for you in terms of permitting, sewage, electrical hookups etc. Whatever sweat equity you put in the place will most likely come back to you when you PCS.

Hmmmm, after looking at the instructions again, I'n not sure, but maybe it means to just repeat the instructions in parentheses. Maybe you missed putting a comma before the word "decrease", or they did. So you would "sc in the next 5 stitches and make a regular decrease over the next 2 stitches", then repeat that until you get to the end.

I had a Bond machine years ago. You don't need to have any knitting experience in order to use one, but it might be helpful. If you start with something simple and work up to a sweater, you shouldn't have any problems.

Sounds like you've been working too hard and need to take a 'me' break. Put your feet up & do whatever you find the most relaxing. That does not include doing handiwork because you don't want to waste the time.

I hate when that happens. You get to thinking about the pattern so much that you start to think there are several different things they could mean! LOL

Last winter I sat down and made a hat for my DS. Didn't take very long and it seemed so simple. I sat down a few weeks later to do one for DH and I couldn't get it started! Nothing seemed to go right. I still need make it!

I usually have trouble starting projects, and often start them 2-3 times before I get the hang of it. Partly I think this is because I work in the evenings when I am already tired, and also the light is not as good. I've got the afghan going now, although I did rip out a good bit yesterday and did it over. Thanks, all!

I know when I start making mistakes it is time to quit for the day. It is amazing how much easier it is to knit when you are rested.
