Leaking freon. Why shouldn't i just recharge rather than replace?

If I have to recharge my AC once a year, it will take me nearly 20 years to reach 3000 needed to replace my air handler, right? Even if I can keep recharging for 5 or 10 years, 2 or 3 times a year, I'm saving $$. Heck, the guy said the leak is in the coil of the handler so I wish I could just duct tape it, LOL.

So, is there any real reason I shouldn't just go this route and recharge when my system freezes 1 or 2xs a year?

Thanks!
