otr advantium, but not otr - why not?

I would like to have an advantium oven. I do not have a deep wall stack in my kitchen plan and cannot use an otr configuration due to ventilation needs of 36 inch DCS range. I see that ge now makes an advantium that can be installed under a counter. I thought that was a great idea, but I tried moving my microwave to a shelf under my counter to see how I would like that configuration. I hated it. Back to the drawing board. What about using an otr advantium mounted under wall cabinets so the bottom of the unit is about 18 inches off of the counter. The otr advantium is much shallower than the wall oven advantiums and is made to mount under wall cabinets. Would this work? Would this be too weird? (I personally don't mind wierd if functional, but DH gets weirded out - resale value blah blah blah) Am I missing something?

Here is a picture of a microwave mounted under wall cabinets. They have actually built it in and it looks nice. It is slightly higher than the counter, but not 18 inches.

I've "built in" an OTR Advantium in a couple of kitchens. You can't block the lower vent/light portion, but you can just hang it from a shorter and deeper cabinet to make it look more integrated if you want.

We have the built in Advantium and no venting is required . It is built in above a GE Profile convection oven .

I have an Advantium 240v wall oven, and have used the over-the-cooktop version too. The oven interiors are NOT identical. Far from it - the wall-oven version has a much deeper interior, about 4" or so deeper than the over-the-cooktop model. That's because the wall oven fits into a cabinet that's 24" deep, whereas the over-the-cooktop oven has to fit in-between 12" deep cabinets without sticking out too far. Common items like a pizza box won't fit into the OTC Advantium, which was the main reason I wanted the wall-oven version. On the minus side, the wall oven has only one rather than two racks above the turntable (the 120v Advantium wall oven doesn't even have one rack, just a riser that fits on the turntable), and the black and stainless-steel over-the-cooktop Advantiums (the 240v models anyway, not sure about the 120v) have an illuminated button panel that I don't think the wall ovens have. As far as how they cook, both wall oven and OTC cook about the same.

"Am I missing something?" Yes, Marketing 101. Sorry about the sarcasm. The reality is that every company prices their offerings based on product positioning and competition. You have to understand that most OTR purchasers are usually limited in space. Otherwise they'd have a separate hood and MW. Size loosely translates to budget or lack thereof. As it stands, the Profile 240 at roughly $1000 is already at the top end of OTRs. For most buyers of this product, it's a splurge. On the other hand, most people who buy a wall oven or even double wall oven have a larger budget. So they price their units to compete with the other appliances in this category. Even within the Advantium family, the Monogram is $1500. Is it $500 better than the Profile? I didn't think so. Sure it looks better, but I wouldn't pay a premium for it.

I have a Profile Advantium. I imagine that the vent is the same as the Cafe Advantium...just a different "skin" on the door/controls. It's loud. I don't know how to tell you "how" loud it is, just that it's loud. It's no louder than any other OTR I've had, but they've all been loud. Too loud to easily talk over. Sorry - wish I had better news.

In my previous house the microwave sat on a shelf specifically built for it, under a cabinet. Loved it!

We hung a wall otr micro convection under the upper cabs in our basement kitchenette but were not allowed a cooktop under it since that would make it a "2nd kitchen" (against code). We have it vented outside since we designed it before finding out about the cooktop. I use it to vent the steam from the coffemaker and ricemaker, and when we renovate the upstairs kitchen, I will use a portable induction cooktop under it as well as an electric griddle. I don't think it looks funny at all and it is in a very convenient position.

Joannaca - That's perfect! (so is the rest of your kitchen!) Is the bottom of that cabinet open even though it has a bottom front frame?
