knitting perpetual socks
Comments (6)I was recently hospitalized and my husband (wise man that he is), brought me my pjs, book AND current knitting..socks. At one point I was having a stress test and my family were in the waiting room, when a woman came into the waiting room and said to her friend "there's some woman down the hall knitting socks...and on 4 needles!!!! (it was, in reality, 5 needles). Our daughter, Chris, said "I'll bet you that was my mother", feeling fairly sure there weren't 2 of us awaiting a chemical stress test, knitting socks!!! People are always very impressed with anything on multiple needles.....another thing that impresses the heck out of people is gloves. One year people on my Xmas list got a scarf, hat and pair of gloves, and I didn't tell them that the gloves were dead easy...if they want to be impressed, who am I to say no! lol...See Morecheap bamboo knitting needles
Comments (5)Sandra, I bought a set of bamboo dpns the same way a couple of years ago and have been quite happy with them. The tips aren't quite as uniform as others that I have bought, but with a little fine sand paper (if I remember correctly, they even included some) they have done the job admirably. I don't think the wait was as long as they predicted. Do let us know what you think of them....See MoreHow to knit using circular needles
Comments (3)Circular needles can also be used like straight ones, where you just go back and forth. Your pattern will tell you the size needles you need. I'm doing an afghan with 36" long size 8 needles. I couldn't use them on a small project. I like to use circular needles because when I have to stop for any reason, I just pull up both needles and shove the work onto the cord. No chance of stitches falling off. I like them so much, that I bought a whole set of needles with interchangeable cords. Of course, the first thing I made after that purchase required a size/length that I didn't have!! Oh well. Find something you would enjoy making, get the needles that the pattern recommends, and have fun. In a few years, you will have quite an assortment of needles. -Babka...See MoreMagic Loop Sock Knitting
Comments (11)I do all my socks Magic Loop! I am constantly dropping the double points down the chair or in the car between the seats. Also, I find it faster than using dbl pnts because you don't change needles as often which saves time. I also don't have to worry about all those needles falling/or getting pulled out when I take it everywhere with me, as socks are something that I stuff in a purse or tote bag to take everywhere I go, so when I have to wait for a train, in a dr. office, ect. I have time to work on a sock. I have not yet figured out how to do two socks on one set of needles, whether magic loop or on two shorter circulars, which I have also used before learning magic loop. I have also tried making socks on 12" circulars and find that my fingers cramp more, but it takes up less room when traveling. As for getting two socks finished at the same time, I have 2 sets of 40" circulars and start both socks at the same time so that they get started at the same point in the yarn pattern with the new self-striping yarns. If I am using a 100 gm ball, I re-wind the yarn on my yarn winder, using a digital kitchen scale to evenly divide the yarn. And if you work on each sock a few inches at a time, both are finished almost similtainiously. I also find that if I do one sock at a time, I get bored by the time I have to start the second sock, the "I'm not done YET!" sindrome! If I do them both at the same time, even tho it still takes me the same amount of time to make them, it doesn't SEEM like it! If you learn well from a book, spend the $5 for the book and figure it out on your own, it's really easy. And that comes from one who does not learn well from a book. I usually need to be shown. If you learn better by seeing, spend the $40 for the class if it's something you really want to try. It is a technique that you can use for hats and sleeves, also, not just socks.
