Patton's stretch sock yarn

Has anyone else used this? It's really nifty. Our daughter found one of those free patterns that hang on hooks, by the yarns, and it was for a short sock that ended right at the beginning of the toes....the toes were exposed and the picture showed them worn with thong sandals. Anyway, I have finished one and am starting on the other. I actually used EZ's sock patter for the heel turning, etc, but the # of stitches, etc, from the instructions...I'm going to make some for myself, too, albeit it with toes! They knit up thin, which is good...easy to wear under shoes. The yarn really is VERY stretchy, allowing me to make them fit very well.

I am using some right now for the first time. The color I have is Taffy Bonbon Carmel. I am working on two at the same time, both on the same two circulars. It is quite a challenge to keep them from tangling. Unfortunately, I am having trouble with my right thumb and have not been able to knit for a couple of weeks now. :(. I do like the stretchiness of it.

do you really like it? I am a tight knitter, and have used strechy yarn before. The socks are so tight I can't wear them. I am really reluctant to try it. You might inspire me to, though.

Francy & Robin, please make sure you either knit LOOSELY or maybe use bigger needles to knit with the Cascade Fixation yarn. If you knit tightly with it, the socks will be too tight to wear. Ask me how I know!!!!! Had I made the socks looser, I think I would have liked them, as I did wear them a couple of times. But they were almost too tight, so I quit wearing them as my feet swell. I, personally, don't care to work with that yarn again. It might not be so bad now, as I have learned to knit a bit looser that I did when I made that pair using the Cascade Fixation. You have to remember the elastic in the yarn won't stretch anymore than it already has if you knit tightly. If the yarn is relaxed in the stitches, then the elastic will still stretch. Robin, you have been given some great advice, especially checking your gauge, which none of us like to do! If a pattern calls for casting on more stitches, but has a pattern to it, especially a cable, try it anyway. Cables take up stitches, or pulls the stitches tighter, similar to ribbing, so it takes more stitches to fit the same. Also, measure your foot from the back of your heel to the tip of your toe. Subtract 2 inches. That is how long you need to knit the foot before you start your decreases for the toes. The decreases will take up about 2 inches. That is how you get the socks to fit your feet in length, no matter what the pattern says. As long as you get it to fit around with the right number cast on, you can make the foot as long or as short as you need to. I use Ann Norling's Basic Adult Sock pattern. It has multiple cast ons for different weights of yarn. I cast on 72 for my fluffy legs and decrease to 68 at the ankle so the foot fits right. For my DH, I cast on 72 and do that to the end with only decreases at the toe. All on size 2 needles. Cables are not hard as long as you mark your rows and pay attention. If you can tolerate some wool mixed with cotton, my favorites are Knitpicks Risata and Meilenweit's Cotton Stretch. They have a bit of elastic and are easy to knit. I tried Panda Cotton and found it splitty and too thick for me. It also wasn't very stretchy despite the added elastic. However, I intend to try Kertzer On your Toes Bamboo (available from Herrschners). The bamboo is supposed to be cooler. I just finished a pair with Kraemer's Saucon, a cotton acrylic mix. The socks are soft but the yarn felt a bit stringy and inelastic while knitting. If you don't mind thick socks, Cascade Fixation and Elann's Esprit are cotton and very stretchy.

YES!!!! My dad has diabetes. He always complains that store bought socks make his toes sore, because of the seams. I made him a pair of socks. Mom washes them & as soon as they are dry, they are back on his feet!!!! I knit mine cuff down and kitchener the toes closed. NO irritation! My first knit project was a dish cloth. 2nd was a baby sock, 3rd was my first pair of socks for me. I started with double points, but after about a year, the magic loop method was found by the owner of our local store. I have done them that way ever since. I also do not switch to dbl pts to do the toe. I have never seen any reason to. I have tried the 12" needles, but don't like them. Also, I have 2 sets of circular needles for socks. I start both socks at the same time, especially good for the new self striping yarns, and my gauge is much more likely to match for both socks. I do a few inches on one, then work on the other for a while, then switch back again. I use Ann Norling's Basic Adult sock patter, which gives you your choice of 3 different weights of yarn and the instructions to match. You have also been given excellent advice above. I always have socks on needles, as they are easy take along projects and fit in your purse or a small bag, for dr. appts, ect. Tami

Tami, maybe try larger needles or add a few more stitches in the round? I was worried about them stretching too much as I knit but so far so good. I knit from the toe up so that I can try them on as I go and am at the heel when I put them down a few weeks ago.

Tammi, Yes, I really like it, although my knitting is exactly the opposite of yours.....I knit very loosely, so generally go down a size or two needle from the one suggested...I was hoping that the stretchiness might counteract my natural looseness, and I think it may have.....do yourself a favor, though, and really TRY to knit looser - it'll make your life a lot easier...no more having to practically pry the stitches off the needles, etc.
Cannahavana...I knit from the top down, and try them on....you needn't start at the toe to do this. I'm curious, though, how you create the heel, knitting up? The pattern I use, I create a heel flap, from 1/2 the stitches, then, when this is square, turn the heel....(knitting halfway across, decrease, then turn and work back,decrease, etc.)....how do you turn your heel when you don't knit down? I can't imagine.

I have loosened up over time, but still sometimes find I need to go up a needle size. I ususally cast on 72 sts for my calf, then decrease to 68 or 64 at the ankle for the rest of my foot. I do mine on one long circcular using the magic loop method. I usually do two at the same time, on seperate needles. I've tried to do both on one needle, but didn't like it. I have also done a pair toe up. I wasn't happy with the toe, but the rest was ok. Sandra, find a good toe up pattern and give it a try. Acutally, the heel wasn't hard to turn doing it toe up.

I do the short row heel. I've never made them from the top down.
