I would call the sheriff's office and report it then take it to the post the second it opens tomorrow.

Perhaps your bank has customer service on Sunday? Mine does not but check and see. If not, call them first thing Monday and report. Your credit cards will have customer service today. Call and report what has happened.

All banking institutions take identity theft seriously. Some places will have to wait until tomorrow; contact whoever you can today and protect yourself.

I doubt that anyone trying to steal your identity would put the opened mail back in your box.

My guess is the mailman left it at the wrong address, whoever got it opened it along with the rest of their mail and when they saw it was for you they put it in your box.

We get our neighbors' mail here from time to time and that's what we do.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that it's nothing more than that. When my identity was stolen all they had was my name and SS#. You might need to file a report at the police station and contact the credit agencies just in case.

I have opened others mail by mistake (important mail from the goverment to boot.) - I felt really bad about it.

I just had all my mail in a stack and didn't even really look at the names. We sometimes get mulitple envelopes like the one I opened. I taped it shut, put it back in the mail. I did call the person to tell them - as they live just down the road. I saw the mistake as soon as I ripped the envelope open - and did not look at the info once I realized my goof (well it wasn't all my goof).

So, it may be something like that. I would bet, like petaloid said, that it wasn't a case of theft if they put it back in the mail.

I think it is wise to add on the back of an envelope -

"delivered to wrong box, opened by mistake" - just to ease the addressee's mind though.

Sure would be wise to notify the PO and others to watch out for things.

Depending on how much you have both handled the envelope you might want to consider putting it in a ziploc bag - I think the police would treat it as an attempted identity theft and if there was a fingerprint on that envelope that wasn't either of yours or the post person's....much better to be safe than sorry these days - there's a fine line between being paranoid and being safe - and identity theft is just too easy to accomplish so personally I wouldn't take any chances.
You could also ask your neighbours if anyone got it by mistake, someone might tell you that they opened it in error, or you may eliminate that as a possibility.

I agree with Petaloid. If someone had opened it to steal your info, they probably would have then thrown it away. Is there someone on the next street with your exact house number? Sometimes our mail carrier gets our mail and the people on the next street mixed up. Or it could have been a nearby neighbor.

It would be wise to go to the P.O., and you might notify whatever institution sent it to you also.

I wonder if you should notify the three credit institutions that someone had access to your ss number. Don't know about that, but you'll want to watch for any unusual financial activity in your name for a while.

You might make a note of what day it was received and find out when it was mailed to see how much it might have been delayed.

More than likely you are ok, but it is a little worrisome.

Take it to the police before the post office. Carrier could have opened it.
If the Post Office had opened or damaged it, there would be a sticker or stamp afixed to the envelope.

My guess is that a neighbor accidentally opened it after it had been delivered to the wrong address.
If I were concerned, I'd contact the the credit bureaus to request a fraud alert .

I would check with the Post Office...If it had been there mistake, like posted, it would have had a sticker or had been put in 1 of their envelopes...Just yesterday, I received 1 of their envelopes with just the torn back cover of a quilting magazine...Strange.....

Like some of the others, I would assume it was delivered to the wrong house and opened by mistake. Our mail person is such a dingaling, every couple of weeks she delivers mail to the wrong house on my block.

This is the time of year when Tax Return Info is sent out. Just yesterday I got the notice from Social Security, and also one from a Bank. They are clearly marked on the outside that it is Tax Information.

I do think you should report to the police, P.O., credit cards and your Bank/s. No reason not to.

On the outside back of the SS one there is a phone # 1-800-772-1213, and website addy: www.socialsecurity.gov.

Those mailings are so hard to open with all the edges to fold and tear off, I don't blame anyone for using an opener!

When you go to the Post Office, ask to speak to a Postal Inspector only. Give no information to the local people, even the Postmaster. Just tell them you have a possible identfy theft problem. Sorry to say, even the best of the people can do stupid things.

The envelope this came in was a large envelope...reg. kind...No fold and tear edges...Just a normal flap that was still sealed...top torn open.

I also think it could have been from a neighbor.

We have done that ourselves....But when it has happened, we returned the letter ourselves and told them what had happened.

We have no Credit cards at the moment.

But I was thinking people could open them in our name as long as they have our SS number.

Our mail is tampered with.I think its the post office lady anything important for our business,from attorney to the government the back is always openened.I have a penpal now about 40 years.she gets letters I wrote the date she gets them a month later.She said it appears someone is reading them.So we tape them shut.She said it doesnt look like tape was tore off.

I also think a neighbor opened it by mistake,it's happened to me as well.I opened what i thought was my telephone bill one day,and i usually look at the total of the bill before i look at where the calls were made to.I saw this large amoun and thought,"who the hell made all these calls,and when i checked the calls they were mostly to Mexico.I never call there.So i then checked the addy on the bill and found out it was my neighbors.So i put it back in the envelope and took it to them and explained what had happened.They were fine with it.But it has made me check every envelope b4 i open them.

I lept getting mail with my street address but the name "Donna Rucker" on it. The PO delivered it because of the address. I never fiugured out who Donna was. I used to give the mail back to my mailman to return, after a while I just threw it out. I hope she got anything important.

bulldinkie - if your mail is regularly tampered with, is there a Mail Boxes Etc type store anywhere nearby that you could use as your mailing address instead of home? Hopefully one that receives its mail through a different branch of the post office? Or maybe a P.O. box at a different branch of the post office? I know I'd hate the feeling of invasion of having my mail regularly rifled!
