Vacation question

I posted this on the vacation forum, but there doesn't seem to be much going on in that forum. I thought maybe all of you might be able to help. My family is planning a month long RV trip from Georgia to California. What would be on your list of must see places?

Being a Texan I would say to go to San Antonio. It is a really popular tourist destination w/ a lot to see. There are some wonderful web sites for SA you might enjoy. If you've never been throught the battlefields at Vicksburg, Mississippi I'd recommend that.

Sinfonian, your blog is great! You've done a great job at it and it was fun reading your progress. It's nice to see another newbie in Seattle taking a shot at SFGing. Yes, I'm going to Florida. Yay, I'll be away from the rain. I'm not sure how relaxing it will be, as I have an 18 month old and a three year old, but still, it should be nice. Now let's hope my garden holds up. I'm still a bit unclear, but I think I still need to keep the plastic over my tomatoes to keep them warm, so I still have watering issues. I've been researching soaker hoses and drip irrigation. I haven't found any conclusions about whether one is better over the other or whether I need to have the hoses at right angles or whether I can just snake it through my beds. Does anyone have any opinions? I'm also still considering just putting a cotton wick into the dirt and placing the other end into a container of water. I've read it will wick water as needed. Anyone try this?

Another Canadian here! We spent Aug and Sept of last year operating the campground in Stone Mountain Provincial Park in British Columbia and will be doing it again this year. We are full time, semi-retired campers with a 5th wheel. The Alaska Highway is the place to travel! Lots of provincial parks and campgrounds or wilderness camping beside water if you prefer that (we do.) Muncho Lake and Liard Hot Springs are great places to visit in the summer for wildlife, hiking, fishing, etc. and sitting in the hot springs! The mountains and landscapes are breathtaking along the Alaska Hwy in the north BC and Yukon! We were camping in all of Aug and Sept last summer and had no bugs in Stone Mountain Prov Park but it was cool at night - afternoons warm enough for hiking in shorts and cold enough at night for a quilt and blankets. We loved hiking the trails through the tundra and visiting the Flower Lakes. Great places for tenting near water all along the way. The wildlife in the northern Rockies is amazing! We saw a lot of moose, caribou and wild stone sheep, as well as some elk. There are also occasional wolves and bears but so far we have not run into any, thank goodness! Lots of camping between Fort Nelson, BC and Watson Lake, YK but no stores and no cell phone coverage or internet. It is 600k of true breathtaking wilderness!

There are some inaccurate comments here. Dirt and damage are NOT ordinary wear and tear (which would be something like a smudge behind the sofa on the wall). Your tenant is required to deliver the premises back to you in the same condition in which they were delivered, absent "ordinary wear and tear". Again Dirt and Damage are NOT ordinary wear and tear. Hire a cleaner, have the cleaner put the place in appropriate rent-ready condition, and deduct the cost from the security deposit. Also deduct the cost of any repairs necessary. In some states you cannot deduct the cost of your own time. I don't clean after tenants anymore. That burden is on them. I gave them a white-glove clean property, and they will pay to deliver one back to me, if they fail to do so. You are required to make a written accounting of the security deposit within your state limits - most are 30 days. Some are 45 days. Be sure you do this, as the tenant can recover treble damages from you in some states if you fail to do so. You can most definitely disallow smokers and pet owners in your property. They are not protected classes. Charge every dime it take to put the premises back in order and never allow smokers and pet owners, unless you don't mind extra damage. If you do allow pet owners, maybe one older dog won't do that much damage. I have allowed 2 different 8 year old dogs that were long-term pets with good references over the years. No puppies EVER. No replacement dogs. No smoking ever.

I was going to agree that you don't have to take the stepchildren with you on vacation, however, when I read that they live with you full time I changed my mind! I can see spending one-on-one time with the children individually, but I can't see taking only your children on vacation when you are the de facto mother to them (given the fact they only see their mother every other Friday and she returns them on Saturday - which is almost the same situation that I have). I would be okay with telling the older boys that they most likely wouldn't enjoy Disney and just taking the younger three, however, I would probably make an effort to do something special with the older two (not necessarily costly, just something special to them). I think segregating them by age given the nature of the vacation would be okay, but segregating them as "you're not mine" would be hurtful since you ARE their full time mom (even though you may not always feel like it!!!). I think my stepdaughters would be very hurt knowing I was excluding them just because I didn't give birth to them. Did that make any sense?

socks12345, we probably would travel a southern route from Ga, through Ala, towards Texas, then hit any of the western states such as New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and southern California. I know we won't be able to "see it all", but if this was your one and only time, what would be your highlights as a must see. Heck, we might even include Wyoming so we could see Yellowstone. Some things I've thought of are the Grand Canyon, the Sequoia National forest, Yellowstone. My dad wants to see natural wonders, not things like city attractions such as San Diego Zoo or San Francisco.

What time of year will you be traveling? We stayed a few nights in Chama (New Mexico) in October. It was GREAT! If you're through there, DO take one day and do the narrow gauge steam train ride.

I did the cross country trip with my kids last summer and wish I had just gone to Yellowstone and stayed the entire time. We were gone 3 weeks starting in KY. There's so much to see in each national park so it's kinda rough trying to see it all. We went to the Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, then went home to NV for a little bit and then went back to KY the long way, through Yosemite, King's Canyon and Sequoia to see the Redwoods. How long are you going to go for? If it's only a few weeks I would only go to Yellowstone, much more wildlife, and so much to see. We were in a hurry so only got to see the bottom half of the park.

Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico and/or Taos Pueblo. I would recommend Chaco Canyon, but not in an RV.

Mesa Verde

Las Vegas (just kidding, or maybe not)

Big Sur, Highway 1 up central coast of CA to Monterey

Thanks everyone, keep the "must see" sites and ideas coming! We plan to take 3-4 weeks to do the trip and we are making plans tentatively for late July and early August. Sure brenda in tx, stick your thumb out as we pass through, we'll let you hitch with us!

I's start out with looking at the Natchez Trace. Really cool history!

Fort Smith Arkansas comes to mind... and the Wichita Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma, Carlsbad Caverns New Mexico, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, Death Valley.

That is a fairly straight shot towards California.

If you do the Yellowstone trip be sure to allow extra time for it-- it is very hard to see Yellowstone in one day. We love traveling interstate 90 through S.Dakota. After you leave Yellowstone ,there is something to see every few miles. Our favorites are- The badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood (great Casino) and be sure to stop at Wall Drug Store.... lots of fun displays. Montana_Jan

Go through Utah - Canyonlands, Arches, Brice - you HAVE to see them. Seriously, there is no place on Earth like it.

If you come through southern Arizona be sure to see Chiricahua National Monument. It is only about 30 minutes off of I-10 and well worth the trip. Pictures don't do it justice.

I know you said you weren't interested in cities but Tombstone is also about 30 miles of of I-10 just outside of Benson.

Arizona has alot to see and do and is a huge state so it takes several hours to get from one place to another. I live in the SE corner of the state and it takes me 7 hours to get to the Grand Canyon.

You are going to have a wonderful time. Enjoy and take plenty of pictures.

just how far have you already been in the southern states?

we liked dallas ft worth(this is based on staying on I20 since you might have time line to follow) of course we went to the kennedy site...(being a child of the 60's)

el paso area is a great stopping point for carlsbad caverns, white sands, in new mexico. i'd rather visit border town of juarez...it used to be less trashy than tiajuana(out of san diego)

a stop in tucson, and south to tombstone.(az 80)going on to I8 and yuma. home to the yuma prison...and sand dunes where part of star wars was filmed. taking 8 right into san diego...and tourist heaven. from the zoo to the beaches, seaport village. cabrillo nat momument (and best view of the entire town) old town, first mission...

if you have the time, up the coast to above mentioned hway 1. hurst castle is a must, as is monteray and carmel. i can go on but give us more details!

mtnwomanbc, I laughed when you mentioned Las Vegas, my husband said "drop me off in Vegas, and pick me up on your way back!"

liz ga---hop on board, I'll be passing through Atlanta, I'm in Athens!

We'll be skipping over all the states between Ga and Texas, done all those--mostly want to hit the western part of the United States.
