The jar I have says June of this year also. Glenda should be able to tell you. I think she's the PB expert. But it probably doesn't last long enough to expire at her house.

Not an expert... I just bought Peter Pan and it expires June 24, 2009

I'm thinking the june of this year, are possibly old stock. We eat ours too fast for it to go bad

June of this year seems very short?? My jars of Peter pan say 3/2009, and I bought them about a month ago.

Sometimes the expiration date is on the bottom of the jar, or on the lid? Also seems a little strange for nothing to be on there. If you find a set of letters/numbers, you might be able to call the company to see if that's some kind of dating code.

My jar of Jif has an expiration date right on the label...Jun 31 2008...I've had it a long time,forget when I bought it.We always buy the twin pk of 40 oz jars.It's lasted a lot longer than normal this time(we both LOVE PB) because I only allow myself a TEASPOON a day of it now.Instead of half a jar and a pack of Ritz! LOL! I cut out the Ritz and just eat it off the spoon.I'm the same as Glenda with PB...it's an addiction,I tell ya! LOL!

My jar of Jif, that was purchased less then a month ago, has a date (Oct 2008) stamped on the "shoulder" of the jar.
It's the reduced fat kind.

I'm sure peanut butter keeps very well. If it would start to smell stale get rid of it. I think those that are June 2008 would be good, unless you don't use it very fast. You could bake Peanut Butter Cookies to use some faster.

I have 2 jars of JIF. Both have the dates in white on the lower right of the back label. Smooth is August 28 2009 and Crunchy is Nov 6 2008.

My Jiff, purchased this past Tues, has a printed expiration date on the label of Dec 9, 2009.

Of course, that's just an estimate, and yours may not last as long, depending upon storage conditions. PB has a lot of oil in it, and I have had jars of it go rancid in the summer, even before the expiration date. These days, I just keep it in the fridge (besides keeping rancidity at bay, that's supposed to inhibit the development of some sort of carcinogen that can be in PB). I just take the jar out a few minutes before I need it, or pop it into the micorwave for a few seconds to make the PB spreadable.

I've been loading up on Peter Pan it has been $1 a small jar here. The exp dates are 2009. I've been buying stuff that mostly has 2009 or 2010 dates because It stays so long in my pantry

My mouth is watering and I want to go downstairs and raid that jar in my pantry. Usually I serve it to DH and try to stay out of it, because I don't know when to stop. Addiction? Yes, yes, and yes!

Peter Pan is $1 a jar here too and I had $1 off coupons. Even better. We go through stages where we eat peanut butter and then don't for a while. I don't stock up too much.

I'm going to make these Sunday IF my family calls and is coming for lunch and IF the rest of the pb jar lasts thru the nite.

Peanut Butter Cup Squares

1 cup softened butter
1 cup peanut butter (smooth)
1 pound (approx. 4 cups) confectioners sugar
1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

Mix ingredients together and press into bottom of 8x8 pan.

Melt: 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate Spread melted chocolate over peanut butter mixture. Let stand at least 2 hours to set. Note: Do not refrigerate to speed setting as mixture will separate.

Thanks for all the info everybody. I'm going to pop by there again tomorrow and have another look at those jars - seems awful strange to me that there's no expiry date on them.

Don't know how long it will last. I keep it in the fridge and we seem to use it most for when our furry kids need pills or when the GKs come down. I will have to try the Peanut Butter Cup Squares. They really sound good.

I often get Skippy ... or Kraft, but have a bottle of Jif in the cupboard (son loves Jif) and I went to check it.

No hint of an expiry date on the bottle.

But there's a piece of masking tape on the edge of the lid with "Feb '06" written on it.

I don't recall being the authour of that story ... but probably I was.

I usually store peanut butter in the kitchen, or in the basement, sometimes have a jar or two in the fridge. I've had peanut butter go rancid in the heat of the summer. Peanuts, also. And almonds.

There is a jar of Jiff in the shop frige that's been there for 3 years. We had pb and crackers two weeks ago and it was still fine. DH is a huge Jiff fan, but since the heart stents he's only allowed two teaspoons per day.

Glenda thanks for the recipe. I've recently decided I like pb and chocolate together. LOL I've got everything I need to make them tomorrrow night before I make banana nut muffins.
