Coffee Maker Issues

We are debating whether or not to get rid of a drip coffee maker. It's a Mr. Coffee 12-cup maker, that takes a regular (not cone shaped) filter for the basket.

The problem is: when used, the filter basket seems to fill too quickly with water and overflows the paper filter. Then it gets coffee grounds into the pot with the coffee - - yuck. We've tried using less coffee grounds (we grind our own beans) or less water, and it still happens.

This is our "secondary pot", the one we dig out if we're having a lot of guests who like coffee. Our regular coffeemaker is an older Krups model with a cone-shaped filter. It never seems to have the overflow problem.

Can we do something different that will save the pot, or should we send it on its way to the trash or to a thrift store? (We still have plenty of paper filters and the instruction booklet.)
