What kind of paper filters are you using?

I found that when I used store brand paper filters in my 12 cup Mr. Coffee I had a similar problem. They are thicker or something (less porous perhaps?) and the water doesn't pass through it fast enough.

When I went back to the more expensive Mr. Coffee filters the problem went away.

Our painter who is painting the inside our of home, loves my husband's coffee. We were gone for 3 days and he complained that his coffee wasn't as good (he makes his in a Mr. Coffee). Anyway, husband explained that our drip coffee maker drips into an insulated crafe and the painter loves the result. He loves our home and he loves us too. What a wonderful circumstance!

1. What cspittell said above.

2. If you grind your own coffee, try not to grind it too fine.

3. Try to put a few ice cubes in the water tank so that the water will be slower in boiling to the drip side.

4. You may be able to find one or two holes right above the coffee filter. If you can fashion something to make the holes smaller.

I went thru 3, Mr Coffee makers.
The last one I brought back, because it ran water all over the counter.
It was new . I brought it back within a few days.

Customer service said, they would have to send it away,
for repairs.
I told them it is new , what are they going to do fix it?

Also, it was the third one I purchased that had this problem, besides the Mayor,
who asked to pick one up for him.
This happened a few years ago.

That ended MR. Coffee for me.

I have been using a Hamilton Beach for years, with one button to turn it on.
And a couple buttons to work the clock.
Nothing fancy but it do make good coffee.

In fact, I know about 10 people and family who use them.
You probably get a lot of other opinions.

We have gone through a lot of coffee makers over the years. Our favorite is the Krups. We've got two little 4-cup makers: a Mr Coffee and a Cuisinart. The little Mr Coffee is using the same brand of paper filters as the big one, just a different size. The Cuisinart also uses the cone-shaped filters. (At the moment, the Cuisinart is using Melitta brand filters, but the Krups is using a store brand with much success.)

The Cuisinart makes GOOD coffee, as does the Krups. The only thing I don't like about the Cuisinart is that the burner shuts off after 30 minutes. That's no good - one must reheat the 2nd cup in the microwave!

Are you sure the water is running into the filter basket too fast.....or perhaps does the filter sort of collapse into the center and the water run over the collapsed filter.
If you suspect that is the problem, wetting the basket before you put the filter in so it sticks to the sides of the basket may solve your problem....it did for me with my Black and Decker.
Also check the hole where the water runs from the filter basket into the carafe....it may be plugged, or partially obscured by hard water deposits.

We had the same problem with the one where I worked. It had a little screw-on ring with a screen insert that was clogged with mineral deposits, like Linda said.

I agree, check the filter basket first. The Hamilton Beach here at the office had a small screen and gasket, and when I replaced the gasket it stopped running water all over the counter. Of course, it stopped working completely a couple of weeks later, LOL, so maybe it wasn't such a good repair job....

I have a plethora of coffee makers, my favorite is the Cuisinart that Elery got me, it grinds the beans, has a filter for the water, a timer so the coffee starts before I get up and has an insulated carafe so no burner to stay on. I've got a Gavalia, and a Mr. coffee and a Hamilton Beach Brew Station that doesn't even have a pot at all. I also have two french presses and a Chemex.

My favorite coffee for flavor is the Chemex, but it's too time consuming and fussy for any time except a weekend. My least favorite maker is the Mr. Coffee, it sits on the burner and gets old, and unless I filter the water, the coffee isn't as good as in the Cuisinart. The Hamilton Beach is convenient, no pot, just push the button and dispense right into the cup.

Oh, and if I grind the coffee too finely, the Chemex filters will just hold the lidquid and it doesn't drain into the carafe, so that might be a factor too.

It sounds to me like the drip hole is clogged as others have said. OR your stop drip mechanism is not working right. Maybe the pot is not under it right and is not pushing it up high enough to allow water to come out fast enough. I personally do not like the way they are making the stop drip feature with the button, my coffee pot has a stop drip lever and it always works right. Maybe you could just remove the stop drip stuff and don't use that, I mean i never pour my coffee as it's brewing anyway, so if I removed it it wouldn't make any difference to me.

I have never noticed the brand of filter making any difference. I use the generic ones.

On the old Coffee Makers, many had a rubber valve, to release the coffee,
when you pushed the cup in to fill.

If you were not careful; when putting the coffee into the filter, some may get under the filter and
down to the small valve, holding it open, then it will run Coffee all over the counter, when brewing.

I Had a 4 cup coffee maker. The coffee was all over the counter?! Why, what is going on. The coffee was not dripping out the coffee basket, like it was plugged up? I took the basket out, there's a plastic flapper on the bottom of the coffee grinds basket. The plastic flapper valve was getting open for some reason? How did the plastic flapper valve work? I gave up and tossed the 4 cup, went and got a 12 cup maker Mainstays from walmart. I want my cup in the morning.

I know this is an old thread, but we've found with the newer Black and Decker coffee makers that you have to make sure the basket is perfectly aligned in the slot to hold it in place. More than once, hubby has just dropped the basket in (we were able to do that with the older ones), and it would fall in place.

Coffee has overflowed the basket and all over the counter. Huge mess. I sometimes double-check when he makes the coffee, but I think he's learned.

I threw out the old 4 cup coffee maker, got a mainstay 12 cup coffee maker. The coffee grind basket has a plunger w/ a spring to let the coffee drip out to the glass container. I got at black Friday price, week before thanksgiving.

I don't drink or make coffee, but my brother has a coffee maker with an insulated carafe, which he likes, and he only uses cold filtered water (from the refrigerator dispenser) to make the coffee. I would never use tap water in a coffee maker and would probably use distilled water if I did make coffee.

I think the insulated carafe is a great idea, but I brew coffee thru a Melitta filter from immediately ground beans. Any brew that doesn't go into a cup ends up in a thermos. Our well water is very good but I still use Pur filtered water in their carafe that sits on the counter. Refer. water would mess with my need for speed with the morning coffee.
