Do You Listen to the 'Little Voices'?

Didn't want to kidnap Cynic's post about the loss of a friend, but in it he mentioned thinking of a friend and then finding out the friend had passed. I've had similar situations, not necessarily sad, often they are good. I think of a friend, one with whom I have lost touch, and know that I need to call. Often times they then call me, or I run into them at a store.

I've been thinking of one gal that I did a lot of business with many years ago, I spoke to her several times a week. She changed jobs and over the 20 years or so since, I lost track of her. About a month or so ago I saw a death notice for her former boss' mother, that's probably what brought her to the surface.

A few minutes ago my office phone rang, I looked at the i.d. and it read a company name that I don't have contact with so they have no reason to call that (unlisted) line. I answered as usual, giving just my name, and the voice said, "Is this the travel agent?" I said, "Is this Trish?" It was. We had a wonderful chat reconnecting after all those years. She laughed and said she didn't know why she called, and was amazed that she even remembered the number. My business phone number has been the same for over 30 years, when I closed the agency I kept it as my office line.

This was a happy ending, but I know that all too often they are not. Do you listen to those voices that push you to connect and reach out?

I do. I had seen my next oldest sister July before last. She was not in good shape and we knew she wouldn't be with us too much longer. But I thought we'd have another Christmas, at least. She lived 13+ hours away from me,and my son lives 8 hours away in the same direction. He was graduating from college the end of that September and I planned to go to his graduation and then go on down and spend a couple of days with my sister. A couple of weeks before that, I woke up one day just feeling like I needed to go visit my sister. I did that and spent a couple of days with her. She told me that she had already talked to each of our other sisters, to her
kids,and to her grandkids. She said that tme that she really wasn't ready to leave us but that she'd had a good life and that it was ok.

Two days after I got home, I had the call. She was gone. She had been waiting for me and held on as long as she could, so she could tell me it was ok. I sure love her, and I miss her. I'd have felt so bad if I hadn't gone.

Those "coincidences" happen to me(mostly good things) so very frequently....so I do listen.

We have audio books that we usually listen to in the car -- it didn't occur to me that these could be downloaded, so I'll have to look into that. The Harry Potter audio books, the British versions with Stephen Frye reading, are what we usually listen to when driving, if there's no good music on the radio. This past week I have been listening to recordings of four bible study classes Jimmy Carter gave in 1998, called "Leading a Worthy Life." Not a book, exactly, but interesting.

My 4 year old GGD has her own Ipad that plays music, movies etc and she is so good on it. Might be part of the leap frog program. And she takes real good care of it.

LL: I think you may have misunderstood the budget question. You have said you won't have a budget until you meet with the architect and general contractor. But they won't give you a budget, they'll give you an estimate of how much it will cost to do what you want to do. What folks are asking is have you decided how much you can afford and/or how much you are willing to part with to get the kitchen of your dreams? It is a way of helping you to narrow your choices. You've been participating in this and other forums long enough to know that the same kitchen layout can cost $40 K or $140K depending on materials used and appliances purchased. As other responders have noted, you have been all of the map on this remodel. I understand that you now have a layout you like. That's great. And I think we all appreciate that visions change as we get more information and are exposed to new ideas. Your vision seems to have undergone more new iterations than most, and it is now proving to be a source of frustration for other participants in that we (they) are being asked to rehash much of the same information that has already been passed on to you or to examine in detail every possible permutation. There are two things any poster can and should do to be respectful of others' time and effort. First, as Marcolo and others have suggested, is search for the answer in previous threads. Many of the questions you have asked in recent weeks have been well covered...some in threads you originated. And second, try to narrow the options. For some fortunate participants on this forum, taste and preferences may be the only factors which narrow the options. But for most of us, the most serious limiting factor is $$$. You have acknowledged that you don't have an unlimited budget. So help us help you, by clueing us in on a range. Then we can spend our time usefully offering realistic suggestions. And if the budget does have a limit...ANY limit...prioritize what's important. Surfaces? Applilances? Where are you willing to cut back if you blow the budget somewhere else? Failing to do these three things, is a good part of what is leading some of us to conclude that you are still in the dreaming stage. And while it is amusing to sometimes fantasize with you about snow white kitchens, it can be wearying after the first dozen versions. Not trying to be mean or harsh, just trying to help...

Good topic! I use Anypod on the Alexa app so I can stream it on all my Alexa devices or Bluetooth speakers as I wander from room to room. Chiming in mostly so that I can find out what everyone else likes. I’m currently listening to Serial season 2 (about Bowe Bergdahl). I like podcasts that do a deep dive into a topic, but I get a little impatient with the slow pace of some of them.

Actually the point of the post I intended to make was less about the deaths themselves but more about the voices and how money, success, etc, can't make you happy so thanks for the post and the courtesy.

I am not a person who consults the Tarot cards or something before making a move, but often I go with my "gut feeling" on things. There's times it never made sense but my gut just said don't do it, or occasionally says "do it!" and I really think it's something that demands respect.

Can it be coincidence? Often yes. I'm not trying to suggest otherwise. But for me, there's been too many times when "something" happened that I do have a respect for it. Not to say I've never been wrong though! LOL There's been times when there was a strong feeling and when I checked it out, it was nothing. So you have to be aware of false alarms too. But if I'm walking down the street and something says take a different route, I'll usually do it. Not much to lose. Or is there? (Do you hear the Twilight Zone theme playing? do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do...)

"Little voices" can often be instructive.

And, as cynic observes ... sometimes not.

Possibly years of experience may offer some help to a perceptive person in sorting which from t'other.

I do sometimes think of someone I feel I should reach out to, but I don't often do it. In some cases, I have waited too long. My best friend from high school died recently. I kept having the feeling that I should arrange to see her (she lived about four hours away), but never did it. I was stunned to hear of her death last month. Now I am finding the time to go to her service (held locally). I wish I'd listened to myself and gone to see her.

I truly believe in intuition and watching for "red flags" that we feel in our gut. When I have ignored these feelings, I usually live to regret it.

Yes, most of the time. Unfortunately, when I get those "voices", it usually is not good news, tho not usually a death. Once in a while I am surprised with good news!
