Puppet Mittens

I remember making puppet mittens for my children way back in the 70's. There was no thumb but the top and bottom were similar, with an inset for the mouth. I remember making puppies or bunnies. Thought I'd like to try for my granddaughter but can't find any pattern like it. Does anyone have one from way back when?

Thanks for taking the time to find these. This is not exactly what I made many years ago but are so cute that I am going to give them a try. You are right, it is so much fun to see what others are making and how they came out.

Thanks for the responses and ideas. I guess I'd better go to BB&B and check out some of the options. Those silicon pot holders and the leather/suede ones look interesting and promising. I do have mitts, but unless I'm wrestling with a turkey or something big in the oven, I usually don't like to take the time to put on mitts just to move a pot off the stove, or take a hot dish from the microwave. I guess I'm concerned about my ugly ones, because the habit is also to throw one down on the counter or table and also use the potholder as a trivet, too. While I do have proper trivets, for just the quick meals around the house, it seems like an necessary bother. I did pick up some interesting magnetic trivets at IKEA recently, which seem like a good idea. Since I have induction, they will stick to bottom of all my pans. However, they are only trivets as they are too stiff to use as a potholder. I also like the idea of having a container out that can be used to hold them. Any other ideas? Pictures? Wow interesting! Wish mine would sell for that lol. His reminds me of stacked rocks. I have always had a fascination with stacked rocks, especially when you see them in totally unexpected places. There's so much inspiration on etsy. I can spend way too much time there. I have bought a few small signs from one person on etsy. They would be very easy to do. You can buy the blank wood already cut into shapes at hobby stores. Paint them a solid color and apply stick on letters. I have bought the wood cut outs in Fleur-de-lis shapes and glued buttons on in various colors and shapes. I did a lot of button art for a while. Google button art its on pinterest too. They are beautiful framed.

So many really wonderful ideas, some too elaborate for me to consider. What I did end up doing was bringing a big box, one of the HG Christmasy ones, and filling it with a massive corral of crayons, paper, tons of those wax sticks someone recommended, a whole bunch of xmas finger puppets, and a 6 pack of spillproof bubbles. The kids adored it, and adults colored too. Some even did wiki sculptures. It was really nice to have something to "do" during the brunch. And one of the moms was delighted to take it home, box and all. GW scores, again.

My mother sewed. But my mother was a psychopath who never wanted me to know how to do anything that she was famous for doing or that might shine a spotlight on me rather than on her LOL. At 13, I took homemaking in junior high. Still can't make white sauce, but once I started sewing, I never looked back! (Interestingly, the only gap in all these years was during my very bad crummy disfunctional marriage. Occasionally the thought has crossed my mind that maybe I married someone who is exactly like my mother.) The summer before my first year of high school, which was ninth grade in my small-town at that time, I got a paper route. Spent all my money on fabric, and made all my clothes for the coming year. I was purdy close to adorable! The outfit that I remember most fondly was dotted Swiss. The blouse had long sleeves gathered into cuffs, & a stand up collar. The fabric was dotted Swiss, white with black dots oh, and the buttons and Lace trim were black. The skirt was black dotted Swiss with white dots. I sewed like a maniac for quite some time. Got married, no sewing for about 5 years as husband demanded constant attention. Almost the instant I was divorced, I made my aunt a green velour robe for Christmas. Then, I had an unexpected expense, seems like it was doctor bills for a kidney infection or something. No spare money, so I took a noonlight job at cloth world. Oh I loved that job! These days, I mostly play with quilting, and lately I've been making tote bags, occasionally out of new fabric but often out of old quilt blocks and scraps. Thanks so much for posting this, it is fun reading everyone else's experiences & re-living my own!

My Mom just sent me the pattern book for the ones she made me in the early 70's so I could knit them for my daughter- It's a pattern book published in 1970- and the puppet mittens are a dog, cat, mouse and elephant option.

It's knitted in worsted weight, and I LOVED these mittens as a child. There are no thumbs, and it is knitted in two pieces (an insert for the mouth). It looks very simple and fun.

The pattern book is "Jack Frost, The Gypsy Knit Togethers, Volume 80."

I saw one on e-bay for $5.

I just returned from Holiday traveling and was delighted to get this information. This is exactly the pattern I was looking for. I made the puppy mittens for my son soooo many years ago. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'll check around to see if I can find the book.

I'm looking for a pattern that I'm quite sure was put out by Beehive (Paton's) and it was a 'dragon' mitten. It had scales and teeth and WAS knitted much different that the standard ones. THe area beteen the thumb and first finger served as the mouth. I have a feeling that it may be the same pattern that queenpalm was looking for(????)

Please do not e-mail me and ask me to send you a copy of a copyrighted pattern.

I am sorry you are looking for a puppet mitten pattern and haven't found one, but I am not prepared to become a supplier of illegally copied mitten patterns.

E-bay occasionally has them up for auction, or there are other puppet mittens available on the web.

Megret, I am not sure what prompted your post. I have not e-mailed you. I got the book from e-bay and have not asked you to photo copy anything for me. I appreciated the information you gave me and am sure there is some kind of a misunderstanding.

My post was not directed at you at all- I am sorry.

I keep getting e-mails every week (originating from my post in this forum) requesting that I either sell my mother's copy of the pattern I mentioned, or that I simply supply a photocopy. I am just tired of getting constant requests simply because I posted the pattern book title last year. I was sharing the information I had to be helpful, and it backfired on me a bit.

I am not trying to be mean or spiteful, I simply cannot provide what people keep asking for- and I was asking not to be e-mailed in the future.

I am sorry I was not clear, and that my post caused a misunderstanding.

I posted this on another site and glad to post it here also. Go to leisureartslibrary.com and type in puppet mittens. It will take you to Leaflet 2275 which is a pattern in several sizes of puppet mittens. It costs $3.99, no tax and you can download it immediately and print it out. Pretty good deal I would say. Hope this helps everyone interested.

my mom made Snuffy the skunk & willy the whale mittens for me.
the pair was one of each animal. i know it was a kit (perhaps Bucilla?)
they were knitted
I thought I save them but cannot find them.

anyone know hoe I could recreate or find pattern ???
