Ceremonial Start of Iditarod Sled Dog Race (video)

Each year mushers race across Alaska in the serum race, better known now as the Iditarod. Because of its popularity, the week before the race, which is always held the first weekend of March, offers all kinds of fun; a carnival (with freezing cold ferris wheel seats), street vendors (reindeer dog anyone?), the running of the reindeer (only slightly less dangerous than running with the bulls) and a ceremonial start along Anchorage's main drag.

The race begins at the statue of serum race dog Balto and ends about 12 miles later in Eagle River. This is used to raise money for the mushers and to let non-racers to experience a ride with a real musher. They are called Iditariders and there is an auction you can participate in where you can bid for a seat with your fav musher. Or, buy a seat outright for $8,500. Yikes! I sat next to a couple at the Musher's Banquet who had bought a ride with Lance Mackey, the reigning champ.

Enjoy a look at downtown Anchorage and the dogs as they race.
