Since it's mostly used in crafting, stores like A.C. Moore, Michael's and Joann Fabrics carry it in single rolls. If you have any stores selling craft supplies in your area, you could try a roll before committing to ordering a larger selection on line.

According to this site, it works on waxed paper in the freezer. You may have to be the Guinea pig and test it yourself. If you do, you can double label the Pyrex dishes with the freezer labels and the washi tape so that if the washi tape falls off, you will still have the other label. I'm not sure why you want to stop using the freezer labels. I make paper labels (or use existing ones) and attach the paper with clear packing tape.

The adesive it uses is supposed to be similar to masking tape and therefore easily removable, making me think that it would not work well, but then it is made under cold conditions, which makes me think it might work.

I should definitely go to the craft store. We have a couple closeby. I do so much of my shopping online, and am not crafty so I hadn't thought to just go to the craft stores :)

That's a great idea--double labeling the first batch in case the Washi doesn't adhere.

I just thought it'd be a fun switch from plain freezer tape. Takes very little to make me happy :)

I use the blue painter's tape to label freezer containers. Works just fine.

You can almost use any tape. I use adhesive labels which I can print out standard items from the computer. Very convenient.

The only problem most of the time with labeling is that you cannot do it very well after food has been frozen. The moisture condensation of frozen food prevents adhesion.

We have used regular adhesive labels, but these fall off over time. We have a big freezer which is kept full, so some of the frozen goods are in there for months. I haven't found a label which will stay on long enough. It's maddening to find mystery packages which could have anything inside them.

what dcarch said, after it's frozen (or even cold) the label will not stick. I use regular old masking tape, scotch brand I believe it is and I put the tape on before it goes into the freezer or even in the fridge. I do not buy any off brand though, you have to use a higher quality tape and not something for the Dollar Tree.

But if you put something in a plastic container or baggy and that is already cold and you then try and stick the tape to the package, it will not stick because of the condensation that forms pretty much immediately. So I put the tape on it before I begin filling. OH and if using a ziploc baggy, I write on the baggy first or the pen(Sharpie) won't write on the cold wet baggy.

I use my Dymo label maker and it works fine for freezer use and it's easy to read. It's quick to switch tapes so I color code as well. I love my label maker. Our whole house is labeled. :)

Ruth--thanks again for the tip, I found some at Michaels and have it in the freezer for a quick test now. Will at least be able to report back, FWIW, whether it sticks short-term.

Jadeite--the real deal, classic "freezer tape" sticks for years with no problems. Ideally, you should apply it before the container gets cold or develops condensation.

I use Scotch brand.

Verdict is, FYI, washi tape can be used as freezer tape :)

Was well-adhered after a plastic lid and a glass lid were frozen for several hours.

Now to see if it still sticks after several months.

Madeline - thank you for the link (and email). I have saved the info. I asked DH to look out for freezer tape years ago and he told me there was nothing special. So we continued to use regular peel off labels which work for a while.
