What would you do with this rocking horse?

I was up putting things away in the attic and noticed my rocking horse from my childhood. My parents kept it since it was well loved and gave it to me a few years back. (Annnnd probably because my name is on the one side.)

I already have some ideas, but how would you make it over if you were going to give it to your child or grandchild?

The wood is unfinished and seems a little dry. The green writing isn't on the other (front) side.

I wouldn't change a thing. If you are worried about the wood, you could paint it with preservative. I doubt that the wood will deteriorate unless it is left outside. Perhaps you could add your grandchildren's names? What a treasure.

I have a darling doll rocker with a needlepoint seat that my great aunt gave to me. I have two sons, so no interest there, and no grandchildren. I will never part with it but I wonder what will become of it one day.

That is so sweet! Honestly, I wouldn't want to change it. Maybe just polish it to revive it a bit.
I would also carve your child's name next to yours or on the other side?

Thanks for all the great comments! Im going to try to answer all questions! Aquawise, I hand sanded the whole thing and then spray painted it with rustoleum. For the saddle and harness colors I also used rustoleum, not the spray kind tho! Then I sprayed the whole thing (about 3 coats) with a outdoor sealer/ poly. For the plugs, I pulled out the wood foot rests and cut them about 3 inches long and reinserted them with some jb weld on them. they were tight to begin with but I thought that would help too. Careful not to push them all the way through!! Sandplum, I actually used a wood bit and just went really slow. Drilled a pilot hole first. Jeanne, I have not started on the other one yet as I went back to work for the winter (until April). (just retired in Aug).. They made me a offer I couldnt refuse!!!! My brother is on the lookout for a geared down motor we can use for the solar carousel. I do have the new horse off the stand and ready to be sprayed. Thanks again.. I'm glad I read these forums it makes me think my crazy questions are not so crazy and that others are dealing with the same issues. When I started putting in my veggie garden a few years ago I threw them all into a pile by the corner of the house within easy tossing distance of the veggie beds. Then I decided to build a small raised border area next to the house for some perennial herbs. Guess what? There was a big pile of rocks and stones there so I started to move them all to a new place and realized that that would be a location I would probably want to use next year. Then I wandered the back yard looking for good places to deposit them. There was a small hole under the fence that the rabbits and local cats come through. That got filled. Still a big pile of rocks to rid myself of! Maybe something decorative? No they are all clay filled chunks of ugly chert and old broken bricks the developers left behind. Maybe a ground cover somewhere? But I like growing things... Maybe in the front yard? Nope not there either... Recently I have been depositing them in the trash, but I am sure that as I continue this my yard will someday be three to four inches lower than all my neighbors' yards and my garden will become a lake. Yeah, that's the plan. I haven't figured out exactly how to do that yet, but I have a Dremel and I know how to use it! Seriously, the pedestal will be important because we get such tremendous daily storms here in Orlando so I need to be sure it's very stable. After looking at some of your posts and photos, Slow, I'm thinking I may want to use some concrete blocks and build a wire frame around them to look like a post. Then I could add a narrower post out the top of the saddle and really make this guy look like a carousel horse! The top of the post could be a great place to hang an orchid or two, right? This is a pitiful sketch but it shows what I'm thinking about doing. If a couple of the hooves are at ground level that will make it even more stable. I can even use some metallic tiles on the support post and do a spiral stripe on the top post! Ooooo! The possibilities are endless!!! Now I just need to figure out where to get all these tiles but that's the subject of another post. Kate

Our patio is all local (relatively) stone. We have a table, chairs, bench and small barbecue. It works really well. Stone is more eco-friendly than concrete, both in terms of production and permeability. How many people would you like to be able to seat? Will you entertain out there? How much rain do you get? Do you plan to do the work yourself or hire a landscaper? You could also use brick set in bluestone dust. This might be a good time to engage a landscaper to come up with a long range plan.

I was actually thinking I wouldn't change much but maybe revive the wood with something? I have that Howard Feed N Wax and also some type of lemon oil for wood.

I thought changing the mane would be a good idea since it's really scraggy looking.

I considered adding DS's name to the other side but I don't love that mine's still there. It was neat as a kid, but my parents had a thing for putting my name on stuff. Of course, the only way to get rid of mine would be to fill and paint and I don't think I want to paint.

I was going to save it for Christmas for DS but I think he'd really enjoy using it now.

I don't think I'd add his name unless you're certain you won't have any more kids. I'll bet all your kids and future grandkids would love using it with your name on it - a family heirloom. Some future generation may just think that's the horse's name on it :-)

I love the mane...is it removable? I'd take it off and put it in a mesh bag and through the washer and reattach it. I would find a food safe wood restorer (for wood counters and cutting boards) to use, non-toxic to your little one.

Love the horse and also wouldn't change anything-wouldn't take your name off or add his. I would check with someone knowledgable about which oil to use. I think lemon oil might stain clothes.
