Gardening: overwintering potted plant

I am trying to overwinter a Persian Shield plant (strobilanthes). When I leave this kind of plant outside for the winter, it dies. So I brought it into the house in the fall, but it isn't looking too good. It has lost a lot of leaves and the ones left are a bit crispy. I wonder if it is too dry in the house, but I know people use it as a houseplant.

Do you think this is normal die-back? Should I put the plant in the dark in the garage. I'd like to save it for spring.
