Wondering about doing laminate counters now and upgrade later

We are working on plans for a new house. We are a little concerned about the total cost in the kitchen. We are planning to do high end range top, ovens etc. and I am wonder what you folks think about doing laminate counter tops for now and then perhaps upgrading them to stone or some solid service in a few years after we save the money to cover the upgrade expense. We have had laminate for the last 30 years and lived through it.

I know the ideal would be to do it solid surface at construction time, but I want opinions about delaying that until later. At $75+ per sq foot for solid surface and the amount of counter top it looks like we will have, the amount for counter tops could be quite large.

I am a little concerned about the cabinets being damaged if we replace the counter tops in the future.

Thanks for any input,

Fant
