Attention Florida members and lurkers

Time is fast approaching for my February trip to Florida. Could you tell me what area of Florida you live in? Also if you would be interested in meeting. You can send me an email at runvswing@hotmail.com if you don't want to give out any information here.

Carol SWFL, Dances and I are planning a Florida Tour and would love to meet as many KTer's as possible. We are not ax murderers as I am sure many folks can attest to. It really is fun to meet everyone, visit, laugh and eat.

As of right now this is the tentative schedule.

Feb. 10 meet with the gals in the Tampa area

Feb. 11 meet with Patty43 in the Ocala area

Feb. 12 meet with all the gals in the Titusville area

Feb. 12 be in the Melbourne area in the late afternoon and spend the night there.

Feb. 13 meet with the gals in the Port St. Lucie area

I know there are lots of folks in Florida that we have not met. Come on out and join in the fun.

Woo hoo! Glad you and Carol are going to be able to visit again and I'd like to invite anyone close to Ocala to join us for lunch on Feb. 11th. Hope any of you that are able can come. If you haven't met them yet, or even if you have, I guarantee you will love the gabfest!

Hey Joe...quite a selection..Very nice plants before the holidays...:) Is your Holly true Holly or common name? Leaves resemble Holly, but thought Holly had white blooms??? Very nice haul. I passed a Good Will twice in two weeks..must have recently opened. Considered going inside, but was in a hurry so didn't get to check their products. Do they sell large pots? 10" plus... Ohio..hmm, there are a few Ebay sellers in Ohio, but can't think of any nurseries.. There is one nursery, World Plants, but can't recall if they're located in OH....www.worldplants.com I'm certain some of my plants came from Ohio, but can't think of any particular place at the moment. Can't even recall which city. Are you saying, you will not order plants via mail before the holidays, but will buy locally? Turkey Days? What about Christmas and New Year's Day? lol Very few nurseries ship after October, and those who do want to get rid of 2012's etc, stock. Remainders are usually discounted. Joe, did you know, once you joined GW, you become one of us? Pods who grow pods..lol, j/k...Happy Halloween. Actually, most plants prefer cool temps to hot, but that depends on how cold. If you start seeing ice on the walls, it's too cold..Then YOU better find a warmer place..lol. Joe, you were very heroic rescuing the little bird..Thank goodness. The neighbors across the street, husband and wife, rang my bell, asking ME to shoo a bird off their front porch..A Blue Jay. I was totally embarrassed for them. Two adult people asking a neighbor to shoo away a little bird! Good, ol' college days...lol.. About plastic..although our windows are semi-new, they leak air. During winter, when temps are -2, a slight draft seeps in..plants on the sills are cold..The cold is a horror to succulents. So, this year, I placed clear plastic on the sills. It might not be 100% effective, but I had to try something. Place a hand near the sill, it's very breezy. They say it's because the house is settling, which may or may not be the exact truth. IMO, the safest windows are the old-fashioned types..With a screen/storm window. Is that the name? lol..Haven't thought about the name in a long time. Two windows opposed to thin, 'gas' panes. New windows are a lot less work, I'll give them that..no painting, and easy to open and close, but new windows are nowhere as protective as the old types. Just my opinion. That's the reason plastic now goes on each window. Nope, can't afford a larger gh..lol.. Believe me, my dream is to design my own house w/attached solarium. Unless I win the lottery................. Next year, if all goes well, I 'might' sell some plants on Ebay..Agaves, 'pups will stay,' 2 Pachypodiums and a huge Pandanus. The Pandanus/Screw Pine has outgrown space. I detest this house w/small rooms...even if I didn't have plants, the rooms are tiny. Thank goodess there's a third bedroom, which is now a plant room..lol. I love Geraniums...what type did you get? Awesome! That was fun, Christian. I 'll expect to see chickens following you all over the place in the next one, though. Unless, of course, the gators get them. Do you have gators in that waterway or is it seawater and not just brackish? I'm going to make a couple of suggestions, if that's okay. Turf grass can be a real problem for trees planted in a lawn. Not only do the grass plants compete (very successfully) for water and dissolved nutrients, they also want to hog all of the rhizosphere. Many turf grass species win these underground battles with allelopathic chemicals. I would encourage you to remove a very generous circle of sod from under the trees...extending as far beyond the drip line as you are willing to give to the trees. Replace the sod with 2 to 3 inches of bark mulch, making sure that you don't pile any against the trunk. One of the single most beneficial things we can all do for trees of any kind is to replace grass with mulch. If you'd like more information about that, let me know. I'm also wondering about the staking on one tree, and concerned about how tight the tape seems to be. The tape needs to be removed PDQ and hopefully the tree doesn't need to be staked. I didn't see a sign of any pest problems on any of your trees...everybody will want you to share your ideas and experiences. How long have some of these trees been in the ground?

Joining the AHS does have lots of benefits. You will be invited to join robins where you can communicate with other people that share your interests. You will receive 4 Daylily Journals annually full of information about daylilies. For your membership fee, you will receive a voucher for free daylilies. You will receive your regional newsletters. You will be placed on the AHS Membership list and unless you exclude your information, you will receive catalogs from the various growers, introducing their newest introductions. I personally have never felt inundated with them. And AHS just started delivering a Newsletter via email; very nicely done I might add. Most of the people that run AHS are volunteers, and they work for AHS because of their love for daylilies and the people that love them. Please give them a little more patience than you would someone doing this for pay. I currently belong to a local club which charges a membership fee. The membership fee barely covers the cost of making an annual yearbook and postage costs. If the local club holds a Flower Show, AHS will support the effort but does require that half the Club members be AHS members. I am considering joining a second club and feel the information I get from the meetings and networking with other members to be invaluable. I have also been able to meet most of the noted hybridizers at the Club meetings. So if you're interested in Daylilies, you can't beat doing both! Ed

Guilty of the drop in!!! Excuses of being a work at home mom with small children in the middle of building a house and moving aside, can I say that I'm actually quite intimidated by the depth of knowledge that so many here have to offer? So when I'm here (as spurts allow) I tend to not open my mouth unless it's to offer something I have direct experience with or just a little encouragement. It's the reason I lurked for so long, and sat up late with my husband pouring over things like vent hood overlap margin and cfms. Because there are so many truly knowledgeable folks in these parts! Can I tell you how amazed I am when someone comes on with their rough first draft and pages worth of input are given? I'm struck at how detailed and patient everyone is with something that this visulaizing klutz can't even wrap my mind around! I too hate words like "passe", and "trended out" because if anything the endless options of building has taught me is that there is no right answer. Because unless it's YOUR right answer, by nature of crowd think, it's fleeting. I built my white kitchen knowing that in 6 months to 2 years, something newer, better, more awe-inspiring very well could try and compete for my affections. But I've got kids to raise and values to instill, and I have to hope that when it does come along, I can cheer on the next crowd towards the next design breakthrough while being content with what I have. I will likely never build a 30,000 sq foot remote palace in Montana with a gift wrapping room, a flower cutting room, or get my husband ever take me seriously if were to show him a custom La Canche. But I don't resent the folks who do and I covet the sharing of their end work. Because through their sharing I get the benefit of their global travels, the architects who's fees were more than my house, and their decorators ideas! On the same hand, I value every detail of the suburban remodel. Every effort to go beyond the big box uniform is a spark of creativity, love, and build of home and family. After all, isn't that what these kitchens are for? There something inherently good about a place where people give their experience and knowledge freely. It's up to us to be adult enough to recognize the inherent personalities involved and choose to see the good. I sincerely hope popping in and displaying a milestone in our kitchen and then popping out for a spell didn't contribute to the ruffling of anyone's feathers. I love what betsyhac said... I wish Americans could discuss politics as constructively as the GWers discuss kitchens!

Nita, you know you used to be an axe murderer until you came to one of the Bakersfield get togethers and we took the axe away from you and gave you intensive psychotherapy. (At that Chinese restaurant......remember?)

Carol,I'm so glad to know y'all did that service for Nita before she came to my house!! She's been here twice and I had no idea there was an axe in her past history. Wow!! We were saved!! Thanks for the psychotherapy. The ingredients in the Chinese food probaby helped.

Carol and Vannie, you guys are too funny. I was trying to keep my past a secret. LOL

JoAnn, I am going to my Dad's for his 90th birthday. My son is coming in from the Philippines and my daughter from Atlanta. After the party is over the next day I am taking both of my kids to the airport and then picking up Carol for our fun trip.

April I am so glad you saw this thread. Carol and I are both looking forward to seeing you and Marion again. This makes 4 years in a row. I sure enjoy our visits and wish they could be longer but will take what I can get.

Right now it looks like Dances won't be able to come. She is a couple days short on her vacation time. I talked to her last night and she was so sad about the whole thing. I told her it would be foolish to spend $250 to arrive on Sat. morning and fly back on Sunday night and be a zombie at work on Monday morning. Hopefully next year she will be able to come.

Nita, I'm looking forward to our road trip but I can't figure out why you need a chain saw.............perhaps we need some Chinese food! I'm looking forward to meeting more Fl gals.

Watch out everyone--Thelma and Louise will be on the loose again in Florida! I started calling them that because my sister gave me a lecture about strangers (like you would a 5-year old) because I'd invited two strangers from the internet to our house. LOL!!

Ooooo i may be able to make Titusville, don't know my work schedule yet. I won't know till it gets closer, if spring springs early then i'll be working sat a.m.'s. my work puter is malfunctioning and i can't get online Ughhh and my evening schedule is packed up so i'm not online alot right now but i will copy down your email... hope i can finally met up w/ you! ~ liz

That would be great if you could make it Liz. I have heard from some of the gals that were there last year and they plan on coming again this year.
