Their plan would give individual taxpayers up to $600 in rebates, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child. The rebates would phase out gradually for individuals whose adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 and for couples with incomes above $150,000.

But it would leave out about 20 million senior citizens living chiefly on Social Security. They wouldnÂt get rebate checks unless they have at least $3,000 earned income or pay income taxes based on other sources such as earnings, interest, investments or private pension plans.

If I remember correctly, when this was originally proposed they called it an advance on next years tax refund. That sounded to me like a "loan" against future refunds. If that plan is still in place I am totally against it. I've worked hard to eliminate debt in my life and don't appreciate an out of control government "advancing" me $$ against "possible" future refunds. It's time this country got itself out of debt. Both individually and as a country. We need to control government spending so that we can reduce taxes for those of us who foot most of the burden. If, on the other hand, this is a refund for a surplus of taxes already paid then we wouldn't have the deficit we have now. My personal opinion is this is another stupid idea coming out of Washington.

the previous 'tax rebate' was just a so called advance if you remember, i'm sure this will pan out the same way. i personally don't think we should be giving away any $$ we don't even have the money that has been spent on 6 yrs of this 'war' nor the trillions of debt we've accumulated over the last 7 yrs. i wonder how people are going to feel taking this $$ knowing every aspect of 'public' assistance including SS, medicare and medicaid are close to bankruptcy w/in 20 yrs? infact alan greenspan and a few other well known financial experts feel medicare and medicaid will be totally bankrupt w/in 10 yrs. guess we'll deal w/ that in 10 yrs. glad i was raised believing the $$ i've put in since i was 15yrs will never be there for me and i've planned for it.

i really don't think anyone not earning even way more than the $3K minimum (minimum should be $20K) should get any, that is just a way of punishing those of us working our butts off, who have made very sound decisions and are prospering. how can someone earning soooo little really contribute to this ecomony anyway and that is the point of this 'incentive'. this country is giving away wayyyy too many services and $$ to make it at this pace and we are just now starting to begin the suffering. if this was a business all banks would abandon it for help (which is actually happening to the US) and it would go under. ~ liz

If I understand it correctly, the $$ to pay the rebates will be borrowed ...from...China.

It is a given fact that our country is deep in debt. It is also a given fact that you can not get out of debt by borrowing.

The purpose of the rebates is to help the economy, by putting the $$ into circulation ie spending it. If this rebate program comes to pass, the money should go to those with the least income. They will SPEND it, not save it.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Another question I have. What about the money owe the the US from other countries for so long? I can't quote who or how much, but I recall hearing some countries have owed the US lots of money for a long time, and never repaid their debts.

Nothing is set, and the congress is already get ready to put amendments on this ""rebate"". Remember the government gives nothing away.
I personally would rather have the following done:
Penalize the companies who just shut down and take all the jobs to a foreign company, by putting a 20% import tax on all the products sold in the US
Do away with the law that allows all babies born here from non-American citizens to automatic become a citizen
Stop all benefits, except emergency care to non citizens--no food stamps, no welfare, no social security etc

Improve the children's medicine program so all children will get the prescriptions they need. Many insurance companies will not pay for children's prescriptions.
Insist that Social Security pay for Hearing Aids and not certain drugs.

I'm with the previous poster, Mariend, she said it perfectly.....There's lots of ways to improve this country.....

Pris, we will never be out of debt the same reason why we will never close our borders no one in Washington has the balls to do it!

Will you have to claim the rebate as income next year on taxes???

Arnie is taking so much away from our schools here in Cali I would rather not get a rebate and have it go to the schools~~~but would they spend the $$ as it should be NO!

Send it to the troops. Give it to the service families that are struggling at home, give it to seniors. It will cost a fortune to even process all of this.

The Senate Democrats are trying to include those on Social Security ,Mr. Bush objects. Personally I believe those who worked and then retired deserve it too.
(assuming they are going to do it anyway,it was Mr.Bush's plan to begin with)

I think I'll donate mine to the person of my choice running for president on the Democrat ticket. Bet that would please Mr. President.
