Icy!

We belong to a local ethnic club and went down last evening, even tho the driveway was glazed in ice. We figured, with all the advance notice, and the off and on rain all day, that the city would have already salted. Not! We should have known better, really. This is the icyist we've seen it recently. DH didn't go much over 25 there and back. For him, that's amazing! If he tried we would start to slide sideways. Because there is a rail overpass the way we usually go, we took another way home. Two transit buses were off the edge of the road. At the corner of our road, there was a SUV on it's side in a driveway. It almost looked as if they had been headed out of the driveway! They probably spun out and just ended up in the drive, because there was no way they could end up like they were if they were just pulling out of the drive.

Well, the parking lot was very well salted, and you could see it had been done a while because of the water. I knew it could still be icy, so I had a good hold of the door handle and the door jamb when I got out. We have an Expedition that sits pretty high, so I sort of have to slide out. Yep. Down I went. I just calmly said " Help. I'm down" to DH on the other side of the car! No yelp, no scream. He came around and helped me get up and in we went, with me in wet pants. Figured we might as well stay after driving on the icy roads. Stayed about half an hour and came home. My shoulder and neck muscles are sore from where my arm was up and behind me, and my ankle, which I can't figure out, as it was strait in front of me, didn't get banged or anything, but I have a bruise where I broke it 2 1/2 years ago. I came home and put Bio-Freeze on my neck and shoulder and am not near as stiff and sore as I expected I would be. I'm glad that was the most excitement we had last night! I am fine, but thought you would enjoy the story.

Aww Tami! Falling is the pits...even taking it easy on the way down.
Hope everything is alright and tomorrow is better!

Oh, boy . . . I should send your post to my DS, who never lets weather stop his commute to work. There are days when no one should be on the road. I remember sliding sideways into the woods on wet ice some years ago.

We have the ice here, too. I brought lots of firewood inside yesterday.

Hope your boo-boos heal quickly!

My Harmony's White Lace is FINALLY opening and is back to the original white version. I think temperature must have a lot to do with it. I have been using this regularly on kid's clothes, towels, sheets and everyday laundry (alternating with Persil power caps). This Gain icy is truly an excellent detergent! Sounds like the driveway needs to be cut down, the new stable base should be brought in and compacted and you can put blacktop as the top coat... It will be easy to maintain and clean. If I was you, I would consider installing snow-melting-system since most of the year you have the snow and icy conditions. There are a few systems available so get a few quotes... by the time you get a snow blower or have someone else to plow your driveway on weekly if not daily bases the cost will be a wash after the first winter. OH yes, as Raven pointed out...the sock does (technically) stick to the ice which is what makes you not slip but it doesn't stick into it. Also, it's not as good as a cleat, you can still slip a bit if you aren't careful and I noticed that the sock kind of gets to a point that it's not as slip proof after a while so you would probably need to replace it or take it off and shake it out after a while. But definitely for an emergency situation and for those people that it freezes once a year like in Dallas or something, it's a great thing to know. I'll never forget one time I was visiting my cousin in Dallas during a terrible ice storm and heard on the news that someone in their area slipped on the ice and fell and hit their head and died! I've been afraid of the ice ever since then.

The roads are wet now, and we are supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow today and about that tonight. The more I move around the better I get. That shoulder is the one I have arthritis in anyway so it will give me fits for a few days. We took our time, and yes we should have stayed home when we saw the driveway. Even the county roads were icy, and they usually start salting early.

Sorry you fell, hope you're better soon. I hate driving in ice. On New Years Eve we got about eight inches of snow, and I had to go out for some groceries. I saw a car sliding downhill thru a red light, evreryone around just stopped their cars and waited for the sliding car to stop. I also saw an SUV on its side. Scary. I drive as slow as I can and I try to stay out of everyone's way.

We're getting rain turning to ice. I bought myself some Yaktrax to put on my shoes or boots. They give you traction so you won't slip. Also remember to walk sideways when on ice and to walk with your feet under your hips, not close together so you'll have an edge on balance. Third tip is to take longer steps. Tiny steps forward lead to slipping. I fell once and never want to do it again.

I hate ice. When our old office building was up we had wooden step/deck just before it. We were just getting ready to step onto it to open the office door and my DH said - Wait, that is really icy- well, I was already down by the time the words were out of his mouth. I had been holding my purse, briefcase and a brand new ceramic coffee mug that my son bought me for Christmas. I went down face first. But I did not break my cup!
