Going nuts with slow socks

How much time does it take you to knit a pair of socks using fingering weight yarn? Any tips on learning to speed knit? (I have a feeling that the answer to this question is, "Shut up and keep on knitting."

Two weeks ago I began knitting the first pair of socks I've knitted in 20 years. Right now I've got about 5 inches done on the first sock. Aargh! I'm making them with multi-colored sock yarn(fingering weight) and my progress seems sooooooo slow. Seems I have to knit for more than an hour to progress an inch.

I was hoping to have 3 pairs done in time for Christmas, but now I'm beginning to wonder if that's possible. Maybe I should use larger yarn & needles, but then I have the 6 balls of the fingering weight yarn. At $8.50 per ball, it's a little expensive to abandon this yarn and buy something else. I wonder what would happen if I knitted the socks using two strands of the yarn?
