I have one, but it is not used often. I do like to decorate it seasonly as it is open to the living room.

Our house has an open floor plan. We have an area that is a formal dining room as well as an eating area in the kitchen. The dining room has casual dining furniture in it, a large table with enough room for 8 easily if we put the leaves in it. We mostly use the kitchen, though. The dining room is right inside the front door, and sadly gets used more as a "staging area" for coming and going. ;o) Books, purses, jackets on the backs of chairs...

Our formal dining room is a raised area off the living room. We use it for special occasions and entertaining. My one complaint about it is it is not wide enough to put a nice china cabinet or sideboard in. I have a large oval dining room table that is set up to seat 6 but with leaves can seat 10. We have considered bringing it out an extra foot into the living room when we change the carpeting to hardwood but I'm not sure I need to go through the trouble at this point.

We do not have a dining room, and have a very small kitchen. Therefore, we usually fill our plates and eat in the family room. works for me!

Yes we have one and yes we use it as a dining room. It's just the two of us and we have an eat in kitchen so we don't use it just for ourselves. But we both have big families and we use it when they come for a meal, we also use it when our friends come to play board games.

Our formal dining room is 12 X 15, open to the living room through a wide arch on the west and to the screened porch via french doors on the east. There are matching chairs for eight plus two upholstered chairs that can be brought in from the living room. We RARELY have a large gathering.

DH and I (and DS, DIL and DGS) almost always eat in the 'Breakfast Room' off the kitchen. That table seats six.

There really isn't anything "formal" in my house! lol Yes..I have a Diningroom. No, I don't use it for that. I realized real quick that if it was used as a place to eat, I ended up having to clean TWO rooms after meals, not even going to mention the extra walking back/forth! lol

I have a desk w/ my computer in there and some other furniture..but NO table!

We have a large dining room, with a large table, six chairs, a huge china closet and a server. We use it as a dining room anytime there are more than 4 here for meals (which is not often). While the furniture is beautiful, it is not comfortable. Our kitchen chairs are far more comfortable. If I ever move from here, I hope the next house has a huge kitchen, with no dining room.

The dining room table does come in handy for "sandwiching" my quilts, wrapping packages, etc.--and the table is the "catch-all" spot.

Technically, we have one in our new house, but we're changing it to the kid's game room. We also have a breakfast nook off the kitchen that will serve as our dining room. A lot of people are getting away from formal dining rooms. The builders are labeling them 'flex' rooms because most won't be used as a dining room.

We have my mom and dad's gorgeous dining room set. I have wanted this set since I was a little girl, and when they passed away 10 years ago, they left it to me. :(
Since we have a galley kitchen, we always sit at the dining room table for meals. We also play games there and do bills, etc. It is in daily use. Even though it is a formal set, the room is very comfortable to be in.

We had one but my breakfast room table was so much bigger we never used it. We turned it into a library, a friend built gorgeous bookshelves, I have a chaise lounge and a couple of rocking chairs in there.

We have one and to me it's a total waste of space. Our kitchen was remodeled and enlarged about 3 yrs. ago. It's huge with an 11 ft. island and a smaller area that has a small round table that seats 2 by our gigantic picture window. The island is large enough that we do not need a dining room now. We use the dining room maybe twice a year. I'd love to convert it into an office/scrapbooking rm. but we already have one of those so my DH wouldn't want another one!

We have a dining area at the end of the living room but we rarely eat there since we have a small table in the Florida room. Handy when company comes, though.

I wish my dining room was larger as it is, when the table is opened we can probably only seat 10 and so we have to set the oak table in the kitchen, which makes the kitchen crowded. We use ours quite often as the kids come over pretty often. I have a large hutch in my dining room, a very old and large buffet, and a really old little side board that was my Grandma's, plus a glass topped tea cart. Yes, I wish it was larger.

We have a little galley kitchen(a one butt kitchen) so we eat in the dining room. It's not "formal" by any means just the place where the table is! When our granddaughter isn't here, we usually eat in the living room.

Yes, we eat in the dining room. For years we ate in the kitchen and one day, I was looking at the dining room and thinking, am I going to die and we only use this room twice a year. That very day, had son to take the dining furniture from the kitchen and store it downstairs until we made sure we were going to use the dining room. We love eating in there. Few months later got to looking at the china and silver, and went ahead and pulled out those pieces and started using the china and silver. Yes, I wash my china and silver in the dishwasher and don't think you are to put them in the dishwasher , but hey, what will it hurt. Got a feeling no one will ever use them if we don't.

We have a formal dining room also. It has a dining table with 6 chairs. We hate the table set. It is not comfortable at all. A mistake was made in buying it. It also has an antique secretary and a very large...I guess you might call it an antique buffet. The buffet holds the cookbooks that I collect, but never use...I get my recipes from the internet. LOL Need to dispense with them. Anyway, we have lived in our house for almost 3 and a half years and have maybe used the dining room 6 times. We normally eat around the counter in the kitchen. We also have a breakfast nook off the kitchen, which seats 4 and is rarely used. I use it mainly to put food on when we have company. The counter seats up to 8 comfortably. I may change the dining room into something else...this post got me thinking. :)

We have a formal DR and we use it often. The room has only side walls. One end is open to the foyer hallway and the other opens to the Sun Room. This location may not be pleasing to others but it works for us. This gives us the opportunity to expand our table to seat the entire clan at holidays.

I found folding tables the exact height and width of our formal table and with table cloths no one realizes it's not one big banquet table.

Our kitchen and diningroom are divided by the kitchen island, a very open plan type house. We do have a breakfast room off the kitchen as well, but it is cold, so we prefer eating at the diningroom table where it more comfortable and warmer.

Nothing formal about my house. My table seats 4 and is in a room with my computer, one of the TVs, fireplace. I call it the family room. My dining table is handy as a catch all and I use it for cutting fabric and for sandwiching quilts.

This 4 yr old house has just a big kitchen with dining area.
Our other house, a rental now, has a tiny kitchen but a dining room we hardly ever used.

Not me, but kinda wanted a house that did have one. I like having separate rooms, not a fan of open floor plans. Wish I had bought a slightly bigger house and older.

Our dining room, which we use daily, has patio doors that look out at the pond. Very convenient for having coffee and bird watching!

When I grew up, we used our dining room every night for dinner. Dad carved and served the plates from the serving bowls Mom put on the table. We had a lace tablecloth, cotton napkins, and napkin rings.

Today, I do have a formal dining room, but we use it only at the holidays. Otherwise, we eat our meals at the kitchen table. If too many of us are present for a meal (married kids and their children and son's girlfriend), then we do have to use the dining room table.

Yes, we have dining room. I remember when we were looking for a house to buy, that was one thing I had to have. Ours has sliding glass doors to the deck and back yard. It is used daily even when we eat outdoors, just off the dining room on the deck. I often use the dining room to serve when we have company and then we take our plates outside to the table on the deck.
We have a table in the kitchen, but we never eat in there. It's more of prep space for me. I don't like to eat and look at the dinner prep.

The house we're leaving has a nice formal dining room. Room for my massive hutch, a large dry sink, a smaller dry sink, the grandfather clock, a filing cabinet, the safe, 90" dining table, etc. We use it at least 3 times a day--we eat all our meals in the dining room.

The new house is a 50's rancher that has no dining room. But the kitchen is large, we have a spacious sunporch off the kitchen and a very big deck out back that will be nice in warm weather. I will put the dining room furniture in the finished basement. It will work nicely there for entertaining large groups in the winter.

I don't have a dining room but Mona, yours is gorgeous. I've never seen doors like that either.

Vicki - I did that too, so finally made copies of the few recipes I actually used from cookbooks and got rid of all but a couple of the books. Love my little HP copier/printer/scanner :-)

Yes, I have a room with table and chairs and a sideboard. No living room, just a family room.

When and if the kitchen is ever finished, we will have a breakfast nook at the south end of the "living room." There will be a window seat, a round table, and two low chairs opposite the window seat.

There will be a small island in the kitchen that will seat two people, and the (yet unfinished) four-seasons sun porch will have the "big" (seats 6-8) dining table and buffet set up as a "dining area" on the north side of the sunporch.

The south side will have the corn stove, loveseats, and recliners.

So, nope, no formal dining room, but we'll eventually have several comfortable "eating/visiting" areas.

Our dining room holds the table, chairs and an antique buffet, plus my piano and computer desk. Also the cockatiel resides here. We only use the table if my folks come for dinner. Had our Christmas tree in here this year, too. DH took it down this morning while I was at church, so now we need to get the table turned around to its normal position.

Yes and I try to have family meals fairly often. I have a china cabinet that is full of my great grandmother's china and cut glass pieces and another antique cabinet and an antique chest. I think it's one of the prettiest rooms in our house--it's on the front of the house and has a good view. I have an Oriental rug under the table that is my favorite.
