Running out of yarn for sock--what to do

I'm running out of yarn and won't make it through the toe on the sock I'm knitting with DK yarn.

I don't mind doing the toe in another yarn/color. It doesn't show when the sock is being worn anyway. However, I only have fingering weight sock yarn in my stash, no DK. Do you think I could double the fingering to equal DK weight to finish the rest of the sock? I can purchase a similar DK yarn, but if I could use the fingering that would be good. Trying to reduce the stash.

Yes, double it. Do the same with the other sock.

I know what you mean about reducing the stash. I have been working on doing it with mine, but I never seem to have enough of something, so end up buying another skein or two. One step forward, two steps back!

I hear you, Sheila. I know some people enjoy their stashes, but mine is really stuff I don't know what to do with plus odds and ends of finished projects.

I was able to knit clear down to the toe decreases, so I'll try doubling the fingering for the toes. Both socks will then have different colored toes, and I think it will actually be cute. Thanks.

I have made a scarf for just about everyone I know, using Plymouth Yarn Company's Sinsation. It's 80% Rayon, 20% wool. The yarn is made in Italy. The gauge is 3 stitches = 1 inch using US 10.5 needles. There are 38 yards to a 50 gram ball. I have always paid $14.00 to $14.50 per ball, and I use 5 balls per scarf. I've seen the yarn much cheaper on eBay, but I've always bought it in a local yarn shop because I need instant gratification - LOL! You'll see patterns showing scarves made from this that all have fringe, but no one for whom I've made a scarf has wanted fringe. And, I use size 11 needles. Cast on 20 stitches. Knit all rows (this is also called garter stitch). Cast off. Weave in all ends. This yarn is so incredibly soft and easy to work with. I LOVE knitting scarves with this. While you're knitting, the yarn is "big and fluffy." Once you're done, you can either leave it like that, or you can felt it. Put it in a top-loading washing machine (you need the agitation from a top loader with the center agitator thingy) and add a little detergent. Throw in a couple of pairs of jeans. Wash in hot water, rinse in warm water. You can run it through more than one cycle. Then, put it into the dryer (again with the jeans) and dry it on the regular (hot air)cycle. When it's dry it will be like chenille. They are so incredibly soft and feel so good against your skin. The colors that the yarn comes in are really nice, too; and a year or so ago they added some tone-on-tone colors. I guess you'd call them self-striping, but it doesn't make big, pronounced stripes. These are just about the easiest scarves you can make - it's all knitting... no purling, no "knit 2 together" stitches, no slipped stitches, etc., just knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit... I made four of these for Christmas gifts just this past Christmas, and all four were for relatives who had asked me to make one for them. And I've got a list of more folks who want them... I do the same thing in spurts with my knitting. I always have a project going, but I'm always looking around on the internet for different patterns, and in here also for new ideas. I find something that I like and then I order the yarn and there it sits, because by the time I finish my current project, I have found something else I want to do. I have enough yarn to make a prayer shawl and I was going to make a booga bag and then felt it so I have some noro kureyon and I have oodles and oodles of sugar and cream yarn for making dishcloths. I like to make them in sets and have a few for quick gifts. But yeah, I do like you do, buy the yarn and then wonder what I'm going to do with it. I subscribe to about 5 knitting magazines and there are lots of ideas in those all the time - some of them way too advanced for me, but I pick the ones I think I can handle.

I think people are too wedded to written patterns....for me, part of the fun of easy things like scarves, is to experiment with different stitches, to see what you like...what pleases your eye. Scarves, to my mind, are great ways to 'preview' different stitches and as they are small projects, you're not 'out' much if you don't like them....(and, you can always start over). I have only used, I think, one actual scarf pattern....instead, I have a book of hundreds of different knitting stitches, which is a good thing to have in the repertoire of any knitter. I simply look through the book, pick something I like, and 'have at it'....you can also do bands of patterns instead of just one, to give you an even better idea of what different stitches will look like...your scarf becomes sort of a stitch sampler. Just be sure to use, at the sides and both ends, a couple rows of certain stitches that will make sure your scarf will lie flat...for instance, start your scarf with 3 rows of knitting (that is, no pearl rows..rows 1 through 3, knit), which will produce a garter stitch edging that won't roll....then, start each row and end each row with a few knit stitches for the same reason. There are other stitches that will do the same thing, but this is probably the easiest. Knowing how much to buy, when traveling (and with no project in mind) is hard. If you aren't knitting sweaters or larger projects, then I wouldn't buy a great deal....when you start with sweaters, you'll get the general idea of how many you used for past projects, and this will give you an idea of how much to buy. It's a good idea, once you really get started knitting, to keep, in your purse, a list of amounts.....how much bulky, how much sport weight, etc, you used in past projects and will likely use again..but, that's down the pike for you...do keep it in mine, though. I, personally, never buy less than 3 skeins when I'm thinking of small projects.

posieh, Sounds like you are knitting continental, with the yarn in your left hand. English is holding it in your right hand, and "throwing" the yarn around the needle with your right hand. How ever it works best for you is the right way. On the other hand, when I purl continental, my stitches are backward on the needle on the next row! So I am doing something wrong when I do it. I like my English way! I have also learned what is known as the Wong way, with the yarn running thru a pin with a hook on it and throwing the yarn with my left thumb. Google Andrea Wong. She was taught by her mother, who was taught by a Peruvia lady, if I remember correctly. The Peruvians tension their yarn around their neck and use the left thumb to throw the yarn. The pin lets the yarn glide smoothly and keeps the oil and sweat off of the yarn, in my opinion. I still use the English method predominatly, but do switch to the Wong way when my arthritis in my shoulder needs a break. If I practiced it more, I would probably use either of the other ways just as much, or find I liked one of them better, but I usually forget to do it! My mom won a radio contest back in the 40's in Chicago for her hint. It was to use all different colors of yarn when knitting mittens or gloves or socks. Then when they needed to be mended just pick up any color you have on hand. She won a lapel watch which had just come into sytle at that time

Just thought of another hint:

Making the toes different colours means that there's no such thing as a "pair" of socks, so when folding the laundry there's no wasting time matching up a pair! Now that's a time saver in my books.

I am trying to knit up some charity hats, wrist warmers and scarves for a group in San Francisco and I am using up yarns donated to my stash. Some were really expensive, but I really never could decide what to do with one or two skeins of this and that, some skeins being quite small. Some of these donated skeins don't even have labels on them so I don't know what they are, though most are animal fibers or combinations of synthetic and wools. A friend just wanted to get them out of her house, so I took them off her hands. But so many babies are coming this fall that I don't have the time for the project that I'd hope to have. Soooo, I will just knit up the rest for next year's donation.

Here's how the sock turned out with doubled fingering for the toes. I'm really happy with it. I bought the main yarn as a souvenir on a trip to Australia several years ago and have been wondering what to do with it. Great souvenir, huh? I've never knit socks with anything but fingering. This is DK, and WOW does the sock go faster (sz 3 needles)!

Nice socks! I almost always make the toes, heels, and cuffs of my socks in a contrasting color. But never with a different weight yarn, nice to know it works!

I like to buy yarn from places I visit and make my own souvenirs too! Made 2 alpaca scarves with yarn that came from the alpaca farm on Whidbey Island my daughter and I stayed at last fall. And now I'm trying to figure out what to make with all the wool I brought home from Iceland a few weeks ago!
