Question about Tilting Blocks Baby Blanket

Has anyone knitted the Tilting Blocks Baby Blanket that is at the link below? I'm still fairly new to knitting; I have completed about 2 inches of the pattern, and the number of stitches comes out correctly for each row, but the block isn't "tilting" or angling diagonally at all. Am I doing something wrong, or does the tilting not take place until later in the pattern?

My concern is that what I have completed thus far just doesn't look like the picture! Any help, please?

I looked at the pattern you supplied. Lay part of what you knitted flat and look at the block that has he holes. Each row of holes should be one stitch over from the row before and on top of the single stitch like this, The k is the single stitch.

It may not be exactly like this depending which way the block is turned, but each hole should be on top of the single stitch on the row below

It is complicated to explain but I hope you get the idea

Thank you, oilpainter, for taking the time to study the pattern. Your explanation makes perfect sense, but I just can't get that from the pattern the way it's written. I guess I just don't know how to read the pattern.

The website says: "The pattern shifts by one st every eight rows," but it looks to me like the pictured afghan shifts every row (like your explanation does).

I understand this pattern is actually developed from one in Barbara Walker's Second Treasure of Knitting Patterns, and I've requested that book from our public library. I'm not going to give up!! Thanks again for your time.

Did you view the video that came with your machine? Brother is usually pretty good about covering topics like this. Always do test sewouts with different combinations to find the right combination...good practice too. Ironically, I was watching the cd for my singer CE200 this afternoon to test the hookup of my cable to dvd/cd player to tv. What they said for knits is to use an iron-on like fuse-a-knit for the bottom stabilizer, and water soluable on the top. You use the temporary spray adhesive on the bottom and press the knit to that..do not hoop the knit because it distorts and leaves a permanent mark. It also said that a flat knit works better than a waffle or textured weave. If you have a textured weave, it's better to do the design on a separate fabric and then tack it to the article to be emboidered. On towels, it said that a velour weave works better than a looped weave. Sometimes you have to play around with the different water soluables if you have a looped weave. Some people will use tear-away and temporary adhesive that or use sticky back, cut a window in it, peel the paper back for a window and stick the towel to that with the WSS on top...you have to have a topper regardless or the stitches bury themselves in the terry.

Well, that's a toughy. My first thought would be to frog back to the error and do it right. After all, you saw the error, maybe someone else will too. And even if they don't, you will always know that you could have done a better job. But, if you're pretty sure nobody else is going to notice it, you could just make two decreases in inconspicuous places and go on from there. It's not as scary as you might think to frog back to an error. Just thread a yarn needle with an appropriate length of contrasting yarn and weave through all the stitches on a row just prior to the error and unravel to that row and just slip the stitches back onto your needle(s).

It should look great. I think the lady who wrote the orginal pattern shows a picture of a yellow and white afghan. I finally finished the baby blanket I was talking about when I posted this. I started it last year and I didn't really get the afghan big enough. The starting chain is almost too small for a baby afghan in my mind so I doubled it. The blanket came together faster this time than last and it looks awesome! The person I started it for had her baby months ago so I'm going to just forget about that! I have another friend who is expecting in Jan and I'm going to giver her the afghan.

so she expected you to store the shoes until & unless she called for them? How much was she paying you for storage? People are downright odd... my aunt gave me a sewing machine. she's 88 years old & she has a much newer model (this machine was one of the old heavy black metal Singers that sits in a cabinet). I couldn't get it to work right, but I figured I'd tinker with it when I had time. then my aunt called me & said, "sylvia, I want my sewing machine back." well... what're you gonna do? so I took it back. & she said that that wasn't her machine, & she wanted me to go get *her* machine. She refused to acknowledge that that was her sewing machine & that it didn't work right when she gave it to me! She told me she knew it wasn't hers because she had put a mark on hers (right, I always mark my heavy appliances & furniture, too), *& that this machine didn't work right*, & hers did. Now she's told her kids that I took her sewing machine & brought her this other one that doesn't work well. so everybody's mad at me. I should have told them the machine was broken & I'd put it in the trash. & my ex "gave" me a set of homemade stereo speakers & a big ugly waterbed that I couldn't stand (but he balanced the account by stealing several things). I traded the waterbed to the 15-year-old boy next door for yardwork. Then the ex showed up one afternoon & told me he'd come by "to pick up my speakers & the waterbed". & he was *offended* that I'd gotten rid of the waterbed! I let him take the speakers. What was the question? Take him a token sackful of baby clothes, whatever you can put your hands on fairly easily, & tell him these are the only ones you can find, if there were others, they must have been in a bunch you already gave to someone who needed them.

I think you're just not far enough into the pattern maybe to see it. Sometimes it takes more than an couple of inches. Try for about a foot, then let us know if it looks right.

An update: I feel a need to confess--when I first posted this question, I was convinced the pattern was mistaken (HA!) After your helpful comments, I took out what I had begun, really studied the Barbara Walker pattern (BTW, it was identical to the original pattern in the afghan), and then kept working on a short swatch until I figured out how I was messing up the SSK YO combination (that was my problem!)

Imagine that--it wasn't the pattern, it was MY mistake! Go figure! Oh, well--I guess that's why it's called "learning to knit!" I've restarted the afghan, and this time, I really can see the pattern forming already. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Glad to hear it's working out! I've done the same thing lots of times...amazing what happens when you really read the instructions instead of skimming over them! LOL

I'd love to see a picture when it's done.

Do you live in ARK? I'm in central FL but have a friend here who is from ARK and a big Razorback fan.

Actually, I grew up in Arkansas so I've been a Razorback fan all my life. Now I'm in TN (but I just can't bring myself to become a Vols fan!) :o)

Thanks for the encouragement on the pattern. I haven't posted pictures on the forum yet, but I know there are some instructions for how to do it.

I always blame the pattern too! Usually it's not the pattern but the knitter (me, of course). But sometimes patterns ARE wrong, so don't always assume it's you.
