Day 5 of no power....

A quick check in- we lost power Tuesday and it's still off. We have a generator that we run for about an hour every 5 hours or so, so we can keep our freezers cold and pump water so we can bathe, get water for the dogs, flush toilets, etc. We have a wonderful wood stove so the house is toasty. We lost cell phones on Wednesday, had no bars at all, so I guess the towers around us were powerless, too. That finally resolved yesterday. We only have cell phones, so when you have no power, no phones and no computer (I use the cell phone to hook up to the "interwebs" lol) you feel very isolated.

We got about 1/2- 3/4 of an inch of freezing rain on Tuesday and then thankfully it turned to sleet, we accumulated about 4" of that on top of the ice. It looks like snow but it's very dense and heavy and we can walk on top of it. We've had a couple of warmer days so the ice is melted off the wires and trees but reports claim over a thousand downed poles and even more lines down. Over 100,000 peeps in our section of the state with no power.

We're in a lot better shape than some other folks, since we can heat our house and are very comfy in our nest, I feel so bad for those less fortunate. I hope the power comes back on soon, I know our power guys are working so hard to help us all, I feel sorry for them, too.

Y'all take care and I'll see you when the power's back on, it might be a few more days. We're doing fine, other than I woke up today with a shooting-pain/earache. My very first earache, too. Oh, joy! lol

I was wondering how y'all were and am glad to hear you're warm and safe.

Amarillo sent some power guys your way; hope it helps to speed things up.

Earaches..ouch! I had so many as a child. Mother used to blow cigarette smoke in my ear..it did give me comfort..strange, huh?

Holy Crap! That was an amazing storm, sorry you were in the middle of it. Wood stoves are the BEST! Nothing like the heat and comfort they afford. Glad you have a generator...you have food to eat and water to drink. Stay warm and hope for warm weather.

Sorry about the earache. Hope it leaves you soon.

Metal--You can get clay to absorb water better by doing a couple of things. When you water, water as long as you can before it stops absorbing, then water a different area the same way. Keep doing that until the whole lawn has been watered as much as possible. Then return to the first part you watered. If it hasn't been an hour since you watered there, wait until an hour has passed, then water there again. And continue doing this for the whole lawn. What this does is give the water more of a chance to soak into the soil. Another thing you can do is to try to increase the organic content of the soil. Mulch mow, mulch mow leaves in the fall and so forth. Doing this will loosen up the soil quite a bit. I can water much longer without runoff than I could when I bought my house as a result of taking this approach.

Thanks everyone..glad you enjoyed 'My Apples'.. Luvs..those apples in the basket and on the plate are all faux. I love them because they do look so real and actually fool everyone who sees them. Kathleen...I know, I know, I'm kicking myself for not buying more of the dishes. Besides being really nice they were so cheap. Those cute little apple candles I got at CTS, a few years ago. I bought several boxes of 'Them' though...lol Sounds like some special baking, w/apples for your little Gson. You always do such sweet things...I'm sure they love and appreciate everything. The weather is supposed to be nice..hope everyone has a great time. yachter...you are so right. I had learned that lesson once before, the hard way. I passed up a fabulous buy on a table. When I got home, I was sorry I didn't get it. So I drove all the way back..and while I was almost there, a car passed me by...with guess what?? I'm sure you guessed, the table strapped to the top of the car!! grrrrr..ya think I would have learned from that... jaybird...lololol..I seem to have really hit a nerve with everyone on not getting more of those dishes.. If I see anything, this Sat, that I feel is a 'Must Have'... I definitely won't think twice. lynn...thanks. I agree, that basket was a great deal, and the quality is really nice too. Not a problem. =) The water readings depend on your mix and the probe contact area. I don't follow the moisture by the absolute numbers, but rather the curve. Once the curve starts to flatten out, that means the plant is having trouble absorbing any more water from your mix. It takes a couple watering cycles to see the trend. The first pot of data I posted is an 6" orchid unglazed clay pot with lots of grit and very low water retention. Watering frequency is about every 5 days. The second pot is a very large maybe 24-30" unglazed clay pot in what's closer to 1:1:1 and unsifted Turface. Same components, different ratio, totally different results. Watering frequency is about every 3 weeks. Did you try soaking your pot for a few minutes? Maybe you are watering a bit too fast and the components are not absorbing enough water. Try that and see if you get much higher numbers. When top watering gritty mixes, I found the most thorough method is to water to saturation, wait 10-15 minutes, and then water again. Not sure if you're doing that already, but it's another thing to try. Lighting levels that peak at 1.0 are quite low. Is the light sensor facing towards the light and unobstructed? The scale is logarithmic: Range: 0.13 to 104 (mole x m-2 x d-1) Accuracy: +/- 15% The light sensor measures DLI (PAR). Here is the data for my primary grow light setup: And in my obstructed living room South window: Fertilizer can take a little time to update, has the reading leveled out? The plant/pot needs to be watered and dried thoroughly several times. A reading of 1.0 mS/cm isn't a bad reading, especially if it's consistent. My desired reading is 0.6 mS/cm for my pots. Last summer I had a flower power out in the garden with normal garden/potting soil and it was surprising how much liquid fertilizer was required to raise the levels. And then every time there was a good rain it was time to fertilize again... As for moving them around, I think there's a lot of value in it.

We are getting a generator, because my fridge and freezer are almost always packed and long power outages are a real pain to manage and I hate to lose all that time and work I have invested in my frozen harvest. Also, most of our power outages happen in the summer. Ironically, winter ones are easier. We can drink bottled water and keep the fridge stuff out on the porch and the gas heat in the fireplace works without electricity. It just doesn't go on and off automatically. Our project has been held up for months due to the power company. Generac of course had a waiting list for the actual generators, but we planned for that. The power company said there was an indefinite hold on meter upgrades due to "materials shortage." According to the state-wide Generac installer, only one gas company in the state was having this "shortage" but they are not saying anything else about it only that they have absolutely no way of knowing when it will end. Well, meanwhile the Generac installer and the engineers from the gas company figured out a work-around. Actually will cost less than a meter upgrade. But I am still waiting on them to be able to get the Generac installers and gas company installers to schedule the same day to be here. I've been playing tag with these companies for a month and a half over these various issues, although just a week in to the installation phone tag game. Wish we had gotten a plug in one now. But we chose the whole house outdoor model due to not having storage space in the garage. We are trying to move items out of the garage, not add more. Now it seems like a bit of a mistake.

Flamey....I am so sorry. We finally got our power back and we were only without for 3 days. Our kerosene heaters worked just fine and we had all the food and other supplies we needed. Hope things get better soon....we're praying for you all......

Ohhh beautiful bird, sorry you're goin thru all this ... try putting a wadded-up warm towel against your ear and see if it lessens the pain somewhat. Hope you get your power back soon!

I don't know what's worse, the power outage or the earache! I've experienced both, so you have my sympathy.

Thank heavens for wood stoves and generators! Now you have to pick up a $10 (or less) corded land-line phone from Walmart. Oops--did you mean your cell phone is your only phone? Then the land line won't work. As soon as the power goes out around here (which it did Wednesday night), I plug in the corded phone immediately and report the outage to the power company. I have no cell signal at home even on good days.

The late Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, my medical hero, recommended drops of warm olive oil, held in the ear with a cotton ball, for earaches. He said this is more effective than antibiotics, less risky, and less expensive.

I'm back, we have power! Yay, it came on and went off again within 2 minutes earlier, but now it seems to be on to stay on. I hope so, anyway, I'm looking forward to a long, hot shower and a good night's sleep. And reading by electical light, won't that be a treat!

I tried to get in to the clinic today but they weren't open. I'll try that warm oil treatment and the warm towel, too if it gets bad again. My ear hasn't hurt since I got up this morning, but it does feel kind of odd when I touch around it. Thanks for all the sympathy and tips. I have a lot to catch up on, lots to read!

For us, power back on, meant not turning the heat down at night. What if it goes back off...?

Same now with this ice storm. Both our daughter, and us, we had the heat higher than normal, cause we really didn't want a 50 degree house again.

Glad you have electric again! I know how much one appreciates it after not having it for awhile!

Did your ear really hurt? And now it doesn't? If so, I wouldn't use the olive oil... you may have burst your eardrum (which makes the ear feel better) in which case you don't want to put anything down in there.

I'm so sorry you've had to "camp out" at home Flamey. I usually put vicks in my ear, the menthol really helps.

Take care of yourselves. My mom used to blow cigarette smoke in our ears too. I believe it is the heat of the smoke that is soothing. But then, she also cleaned tar out of our hair with a lit cigarette in her mouth too. Try the olive oil instead.

It's the nicotine in the cigarette that helps the earache. The nicotice deadens the nerves in that area which helps relieve the pain.

My mom did blew smoke in my ears and I did it to my kids too. Always relieved the pain for a while.

Bet you were glad you could keep your refrigerator and freezer running with the generator (oops - that's an alternator).
